Sweet citrus, seagrass, peat smoke and oak are combined to a very delightful dram here. In spite of the 18 year long maturing period I think you can differentiate the influences of the distilleries from the isles. Were it not for a slight cardboardy note in the middle of the palate (perhaps due to some tired casks in the mix), this blended malt could easily reach 90 in my book. I guess for 75 € you have to compromise a little bit.
    • Nose

Very expressive, on seaweed, whelks, lemon drops, melon, honey and burning heather. After a while the oak comes in, with furniture polish and cinnamon added to the fruity-grassy-peaty-sour mix. So it reaches quite a level of complexity while remaining very pleasant. You can nose this either trying to differentiate the several distillery characters blended into this malt or as a whole, either way it's fun and makes you acknowledge the blender's impressive abilities.
    • Taste

On the start it's just as good as the nose with these broad and refreshing citrus notes combined with melon, honey and heather. Then the peat makes its appearance intermingled with oak and a dusty cardboard note which is not quite as pleasurable as the rest of the experience. This may derive from tired refill casks that are perfectly reasonable for an island blend in order to accentuate the distinct character of these malts, but in this case they show just a bit too much. The whole thing becomes quite dry...
    • Finish
      87 87
...recovering in the finish. Now the cardboardiness is gone in favour of a medium long, dry, smoky honeyed finish which is very satisfying. So if you can live with that very short moment of slight disappointment on the palate, you may buy this whisky as a nice and affordable example of a well aged Islander.
