About whiskydramo:

Drinking, Fast and Slow...

The distribution of whisky scores tends to be negatively skewed and concentrated between 85 and 90 points. Here's how I'm trying to follow the "unwritten rules":

  • ≥95: Legendary and it's rare for modern releases.

  • 90-94: Excellent, I will secure a bottle for a reasonable price, actually even with a small markup.

  • 88-89: Good, I will buy one if it's at discount vs market price.

  • 86-87: Not too bad, but waste of space at home.

  • ≤85: Spit it out, the damage to your body outweighs the joy... Also my scores below 85 won't be as granular, let me know if you care.

As a rule, the score I give to a whisky is based on how it's bottled, i.e. no water added, but I might comment on any improvement if a whisky is slightly diluted. There're so many variables out there already, oxidisation is one that's almost impossible to control, let's not add another random factor to complicate what should be an enjoyable process, e.g. how much water should be added. Some whiskies could taste much better with water because they're young, strong-flavoured or over-mentholated, but this practice is not fair to others that don't need water to excel.
