[July, 2017]  Bladnoch is one of my favourite Lowland distilleries so for sure I have to try this new edition (but I did not buy a bottle at this price that is way too high from my point of view).

I call this a masochistic dram, not just for the nose and taste but for the price tag too.  Sorry Bladnoch, but with these cask selections the new owner did you not a favour...
    • Nose
      75 75
The colour is russetmuscat and the texture shows a few fast legs and late sticky tears. The first impression on the nose is an unpleasant cheesy aroma that some might call brackish water or rotten eggs (hence they state sulphurous notes). This goes away after some minutes and now more herbal aromas pop up that I do not like either, unfortunately. Some sherry casks develop this profile and in the past no one bottled such casks really, but hey - it is whisky boom time and sherry cask editions sell like hell (literally)... No, the nose is not to my liking!
    • Taste
      80 80
The taste itself is better on a strong herbal profile (camphor, eucalyptus and the like) that reminds me of bitter medicine from my childhood days. But it is drinkable, at least. Water turns the nose surprisingly more punchy and closed (very strange!) but smoothes the taste and mouthfeel. I like it that way better as the nose was anyhow unpleasant! Neat I score it 3 to 5 points lower.
    • Finish
      79 79
The dram arrives in the mouth hot and peppery and just a little coating with significant bitter and astringent moments from heavy tannins, not my cup of mouthfeel either... The finish is medium, very sweet and peppery with again an unpleasant astringent feeling (cardboards).
