So sweet and mild on the palate; I'm sure that this could well have been bottled at a higher strength without inviting in too much of burn. Then a higher score would probably have been in order.

Really nice mid-nineties Clynelish: fruity, waxy, fatty, saline, mineral, with a soft herbal touch from the oak. Whether you describe the fruitiness as apple, or grape, or melon is up to debate, I'd say, and a bit beside the point as well. Character-wise this appears to me like a sweeter, more maritime, less intense (and less impressive) variant of the Craigellachie 23. A good deal of chalk, limestone, graphite, and wet seashells. Freshly cut and chopped herbs from the garden: parsley and rosemary, perhaps? Certainly a savory, slightly salty side. More dusty / dry oak comes out with more time in the glass.

Sweet, fruity, almost nectar-like attack, with the pulp of white (or "bright") fruits like pineapple, melon, lychee, and ripe, squishy pear. Excellent! The sweetness and juiciness carry all the way through to the finish, when things get a touch more bitter and astringent.

All of the above, plus pickled ginger and a pinch of white pepper. Gets elegantly tart pretty swiftly, which isn't a bad thing in itself, but it does push aside the fruity sweetness. Some "neutral" oak (think carpentry workshop) as well.

Edit: after a few sips, I'm wondering if there isn't some residual peat in here – which would also add to this acerbic, carbolic impression I'm getting.
