These old Caol Ila's are always a beauty. No exception for this one. I do feel this leans a bit too much to the maritime side for matters of balance. It numbed my mouth a little, as if I had too much salt & vinegar chips. The finish tastes exactly like that too. I love those chips so this would be the best alternative calorie-wise. All in all a good, but not outstanding old Caol Ila that acts younger. Judging from 3cl alone, I enjoyed the OB 25yo more.

    Based on a sample.
    • Nose
Peaty but not so much, rather full of subtleties.
Stating the obvious with peat, smoked bacon, soot, fish oil, pine tree sap and seasalt. Thereafter some ripe fruits like apricot, fig, blueberry, pineapple and a dash of orange oil. Then some praliné, butterscotch, mint, camphor and even a little Springbank funk are there too. Cadenhead's, did you put a dollop of Springbank in here? Hey, I don't mind actually.
I don't know what it smells like on the coast of Islay, but I imagine myself walking there now on a stormy day.
    • Taste
A quite powerful and hot arrival. It's a mix of the common Islay components but the maritime notes stick out the most. Medium oily texture but very drying. It definitely isn't tired yet after 32 years of resting.
Peat, iodine, sea salt, white pepper, smoked meat, camphor and cough syrup. Then some blood orange, apricot and fig as fruity components. Furthermore dark chocolate, brownie, lemon cheesecake, licorice and ginger. So salty this one! Lacks a bit of variety (mostly fruits) honestly but it fits together pretty well.
    • Finish
Everlasting with mainly maritime components. Peat, sea salt, vinegar, orange peel, dark chocolate, caramel, licorice and olive.
