[February, 2019] What the .... is a luxury whisky? I never heard of one so all whiskies are "not a luxury" - what else? A nice marketing slogan by Compass Box, nonetheless. But how does an ordinary whisky taste ("ordinary" is the opposite of "luxury", right)?

Excellent, to be honest! The nose and the very first tasting impression reminds me of a fine old 'farclas from the early eighties (bourbon matured) but then it develops an own unique profile. Very interesting and quaffable...
    • Nose
      91 91
The colour is yellow gold and the nose offers not a luxury profile (sorry folks, I know this is cheap)... It is composed of fruits, honeys and waxes in abundance. The woods add spices and shy herbs, after some breathing additional floral notes and hints of peat pop up. Not bad for an ordinary dram! All is pretty balanced and without any off-note - this dram reminds me of some fine bourbon-matured Glenfarclas Family Casks I tasted recently (the honeyd fruitiness of Glen Ord combined with shy peats from Caol Ila and waxy-floral notes of the grains result in an 80ies Glenfarclas-alike, isn't that funny?). I like this nose!
    • Taste
      90 90
The taste reminds me of such a Glenfarclas of the early eighties too, very strange. It is more waxy and floral with just a few fruity flavours compared to the nose. Later some chocolatey notes (both milk and dark) join in and the spices and herbs grow stronger. Now the Glenfarclas-appeal is gone and this taste is rather unique but a little unbalanced towards the bitter flavours.
    • Finish
      91 91
The initial mouthfeel is not luxury either but pretty fine: warming and instantly coating without distracting moments. The finish is medium to long and adds more sweeter flavours (honeys, sugars) that balance the profile again. There is a minor bitter moment towards the end but this is not distracting at all. Water releases more chalky-mineral aromas in the nose and turns the taste more balanced through strengthening the sweeter notes. I like this dram best a little reduced to about 46% abv.
