[September, 2018] A sample courtesy of VVP and another special release of Benriach and most were above average so far - I am curious if this one fits into that row...

...and it does! It is a very quaffable peaty-sherry-vanilla-sugary dram without any flaw but an interesting and nicely balanced profile. A great modern dram without that annoying "excessive woods" attitude that so many recent releases "punch-in-ya-face" (well done, Benriach and VVP!)...
    • Nose
      89 89
The colour is russetmuscat and the nose offers a fine mainland peaty profile with some sherry and malty sugary aromas in a nice combo. The peat aromas remind rather of a cold bonfire without the maritime or medicinal notes most island drams offer. The sherry is a modern herbal-driven style without any flaw that I can find while the malt characteristics are based on toffee and sugars. The profile is not the most complex one but I like it!
    • Taste
      89 89
The taste is very sugary sweet on vanilla-toffee and minor sherry-induced flavours. The peat again reminds of cold fireplaces (cold ashes) and the wooden notes are just about right to provide a firm structure to the dram. No flaw or off-note (no sulphur!), a fine selection of casks for sure. Some water releases more aromas in the nose and on the palate, the dram gets even more quaffable at around 40% abv.
    • Finish
      88 88
The initial mouthfeel is warming and coating without distracting moments. The finish is medium long, even sweeter than the taste and dries out on the peaty-ashy flavours. It is nicely chewable with the last impression being an enourmous sweetness from different barley sugars. Not too bad...
