Whisky Reviews for Bruichladdich 2003 MoS

  1. HammerHead scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

Nose: very fruity with oranges, lemonpeel, peach, pineapple, passionfruit, strawberries with cream, vanilla and custard. Some water and extra time gets the tropical fruits way up front..

Taste: lots of the same fruitiness which is coming around and around, followed by a little nippy alcohol (though not as much as expected when looking at the abv). Does not need a lot of water.

Finish: short to medium, a fruit juice coating balanced with wood spices and the slightest warming alcohol.

A fantastic fruit bomb, maybe a bit pricy considering it's age, but definitely not considering it's quality.

11-03-2018: second dram out of my sample. It has improved, fantastic bottling.

Great bottling of MoS and respect for choosing this one. I overlooked it, because of the price/ age. Don't let it fool you.
    • Nose
There is a lot going on in this one. Lots of fruit and different ones. Oranges and the bitter skin. Pomme granate, yeah that's not often.  Pineapple and other tropical sweetness. Next to all that goodness a strange slightly dirty note. Straw, hay. Earthy with some rubber and leafy? It doesn't hurt it, even improves it.
    • Taste
Sweet vanilla cream with lots of fruit. Strawberry and whipped cream, mango, nice ginger tea.

That earthy/ rubber note I was talking about...now gives some nice layered peat (well hint of).
    • Finish
The fruit lingers on with sweetness and still this earthy twist in it.

This Bruidladdich reminds me of the one from the Port Charlotte hotel from  last year`s Feis Ile. The nose is amazing even reminds me of something Littlemillish ( Jute, dry grass and lots of yellow fruit).

It's a real beast. Big, full and powerfull.  In fact I think this is a sister cask !

A small fruity and honeyed bomb (it looks like a barrel of rum). Juicy and exotic fruits. The mouth is a little aggressive and improves with water

Great taste and finish, interesting in the nose.
I have just increased my overall rating by four points after the second enjoyment of the whisky. Especially the nose was significantly fruity and balanced on the second try.

The nose is special. Very special.
Nice cheese, the "feet" we leave here once.
Rarely experienced such a special scent in a whisky.
Cheese biscuits, straw, dried grass maybe, but always some bittersweet in the background.

      BUT:
At the second enjoyment of the whisky, after the bottle was open one day, the scent changed very much to the positive. (from 81 to 86 points)
The cheesy is almost completely gone. Now fruity, lightly fried bacon in the background, vanilla.
    • Taste
      87 87
But then surprisingly much better in the taste. (even the first time) He is creamier, butterier, many lighter fruits, vanilla.
      Green mango and ginger.
    • Finish
      84 84
Finish is medium and remains on the positive side. Warming. Typical Bourbon barrel finish without becoming too bitter.
