Simply a good, sturdy blend with an interesting recipe.
    • Nose
Very nice. Lemons and freshly cut grass but also tropical fruits like mango and coconut. Underneath this all is the slightest suggestion of earthy peat. A very nice, and perhaps more importantly, coherent nose.
    • Taste
A very oily mouthfeel which is lovely. Lemons and apple cider, honey and beeswax. Not in a boring way mind you, it’s all running through each other eloquently.
    • Finish
A medium long finish, mainly the (green) apples and lemons remain.

      Malty and expressive. Interesting, compelling.
    • Taste

It is malty, oldish, with a strange-bitter aftertaste. But burny and nice.

Quite delicious and pleasing. A nice blend. In particular, the bright tropical fruits but very much. Unfortunately, but the very expensive price prevents a bottle purchase.
    • Nose

Nice sweet nose. Bright fruit basket covered with honey. A little reserved. Just as easy cereal notes.
    • Taste
      87 87
The sweetness continues. Likewise the tropical bright fruits. Already round and smooth. Mild and sweet at the same time. The honey takes in a light spice. In the background some oak and cereal.
    • Finish

Short to medium. A bit too fast for my taste. The sweetness turns a bit into bitterness and dryness. Still juicy, so in the direction of blood orange.

  7. Kaleva scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Pretty good whisky, mild and pleasant with quite rich nose. Well balanced, without any sharp corners, however the palate is rather simple. The finish is pleasant but not very long. You can neither say anything bad about this whisky nor actually anything going beyond just "good". With it's price starting from 150 euros looks really overpriced.
    • Nose
Fresh, slightly malty, green pear, earthy notes, fruit caramel, some sour notes (white wine?), oat cookies, lemon zest, almost insensible touch of smoke, vanilla notes after adding water
    • Taste
Sweet, a bit spicy, buttery, fruity (peach, pear), vanilla, touch of salt and smoke, walnut, some vegetables
    • Finish
Medium-long, with some malt and spices (nutmeg, pepper), slowly getting dry, light touch of smoke

As we have come to expect from Compass Box, this is very, very well made. An excellent start of a tasteful 2018! The different components fall perfectly into place, painting a beautiful picture with all kinds of small details that you only notice when you spent some time with this whisky.

The first impression is that of fresh yellow fruits, lots of them, including oranges, mirabelle plums, juicy pears and green apples. Very fragrant with a slight spicy edge containing vanilla and white pepper. Some range flavoured candy, and many white grapes, which reminds me of some of the recent single cask cognacs from the SMWS that I have tasted. From the beginning on there is a lovely earthy, nutty and floral undercurrent that comes more and more to the surface over time. A comparison to the Kilkerran 12 years jumps into my mind. I also find earthy white wines, or champagne, buttercups, magnolias, walnut oil, and more freshly pressed white grapes. It remains astonishingly fresh with a large depth to it, displaying a concert of various fruity, earthy and floral tones into my mouth.
    • Taste
      87 87
Bitter oranges, citrus sweets, glazed nuts and honey covered pears form the foreplay, before the earthy side comes up. The palate offers more of a kick with pepper, paprika, and vegetal notes of celery and cabbage. This is pretty feisty, but it remains in check by a fruity undercurrent of citrus sweets, pears and white grapes. It has also something from spring-like with rubbed leaves and freshly cut grass.
    • Finish
      88 88
There is a long and steady aftertaste with persistent oranges, oils and even a hint of peat in the distance.

I like Compass Box whisky. It always gives an interesting taste. Sometimes it’s awesome, sometimes - not bad. But it isn’t underwhelm you. Like and new - Phenomenology with 46% abv.
    Colour: gold.
Nose: sweet, oak, pears, croissant, sweet fruits, caramel, light fruit rottenness, apples and pears stones, furniture varnish.
Mouth: sweet with light sourness, pepper, oak and pear peel.
Finish: middle with spices, vanilla, oak, varnish and pears notes.
Phenomenology is a good balanced and smooth whisky. It’s good, but I expect something more. I gave 84 points, although at first my rating was 82, but I raised up it at the end of tasting.
