[March, 2019] Glenturret is a strange animal - most of its releases are rather sub-standard (e.g., the sixties vintages are almost all extremely perfumy/soapy) but some are really good. Looking at all the high scores of this bottling this must be great...

...and it is, at least by Glenturret standards. An easy quaffable and interesting to explore dram, but still this is not on eye-level with the best drams of the tier-1 distilleries. Nevertheless, very enjoyable.
    • Nose
      91 91
The colour is yellow gold and the nose offers a delicious fruity-toffee profile with heather honey, beeswaxy and earthy aromas in a balanced mix. The wood is rather shy but adds fine spices after some breathing. Later floral notes join in while the oak grows stronger but it never dominates, the fruits vanish somewhat. No off-note that I can find, a truly great nose!
    • Taste
      90 90
The taste is toffee-vanilla sweet with bitter notes of herbs, tea and tobacco ash. Quite interesting but different to the nosing profile. Where are the fruits and honeys? After some chewing they dare to enter the stage but they stay rather shy. Instead loads of waxy and oily flavours rush on my taste buds, pretty nice. The spices are late but powerful and complement the other flavours nicely. The wooden notes are strong but still do not dominate too much which is great. No flaw here either (which is unusual with Glenturret that often produces strange but interesting off-notes).
    • Finish
      89 89
The dram arrives warming but not very much coating on the palate with a minor drying-astringent mouthfeel (cold metals and tannins). The finish is long and turns more spicy-oaky with a rather bitter profile towards the end that nonetheless never gets unpleasant. But there is a significant drying-astringent feeling that might not be to everyone's liking. Water releases more waxy and chalky aromas in the nose but it flattens the taste - I like this dram best when neat.
