Matured predominantly in European and American oak sherry seasoned casks. Chill-filtered. Natural colour. Thick fast slowly forming primary legs. Midsize slow secondary legs. Rare trailing droplets. Holds water well despite its ABV. A classical 12 year old scotch whisky: a generic single malt scotch.
    • Nose
Sweet: heather honey, confectionery, chocolate, toffee. Floral: heather, fragrant. Fruity: orchard fruit: apple, pear; citrus: orange, stone fruit: plum; dried fruit: date, fig, raisin. Cereal: malted barley, bread, biscuit, hay, dough note. Smoky: heather peat, ash. Spicy: mint, pepper, ginger, baking spices, green tea. Feints: leather, tang, cardboard, wax. Woody: oak. Maritime: sea breeze, brine. Nutty: roasted nuts, walnut, chestnut, cocoa. Herbal: grass, straw. Earthy: turf. Oily: cream. Winey: sherry note. Full body: wide range. Rich. Water brings up nutty notes and extends the range.
    • Taste
Sweet: flower honey, confectionery, toffee, chocolate. Fruity: fresh fruit, citrus: lemon, orange; fruitcake; stone fruit: cherry, plum, apricot; dried fruit. Spicy: baking spices, cinnamon, pepper, ginger, green tea. Cereal: malt, toasted bread. Smoky: heather peat. Maritime: brine. Feints: tobacco, leather. Floral: heather. Texture: mouthcoating, mouthwatering. Full body: balanced, smooth. Water turns up fruity notes.
    • Finish
Long. Smoky: heather peat, ash. Fruity: dried fruit. Winey: sherry. Spicy: pepper, liquorice, salt. Sweet: confectionery, honey, toffee, chocolate. Woody: oak, oak tannins. Maritime: salt. Herbal. Cereal. Full body. Water extends the finish.

Let me put it this way: it doesn't hurt anybody, except those who know what HP (12yo) is capable of... For more than 1 1/2 decades a far cry from excellent previous versions. That said, it's at least still a 12 yo amongst all its nas brethren for a decent price. So current HP12 has its place along with other entry level malts like Oban, Dalmore, Glenlivet, etc.

Highland Park 12 really has a lovely nose. I dont taste any peat in it. Even with just mere 40% it is a nice tasty dram. Worth the try for its supermarket price tag in my opinion.
    • Nose
Caramel, citrusy, honey, toffee, creamy, dark fruits in cream
    • Taste
Caramel, sherry notes. No peat. A bit spicy. A hint of matchsticks.
    • Finish
Sherry notes prevail. Some honey as well.

    • Nose
The typical slight smokiness is immediately in my nose. But it quickly fades into the background and hints of sherry and honey sweetness follow. The sherry brings with it an association of fresh, ripe fruit. After a while, more and more spicy notes (ginger) and fresh herbs (heather) prevail. After the first taste, the sweetness fades further into the background and spicy notes from the cask come through more strongly. In addition to these spicy, tart notes, there is a subtle maltiness, which in combination is vaguely reminiscent of beer. The fresh fruits give way to dried fruits like raisins.
    • Taste
First, the sweetness and the sherry come to the fore again. The slight smokiness is also present again at the beginning. Similar to the nose, these notes are slowly replaced by the spiciness of the oak and the malty notes.
    • Finish
The spice and malt remain dominant on the long finish, with the spiciness of the oak fading slightly into a bitterness associated with roasted coffee.

Highland Park is also the only one of the few distilleries that independently malts some of the barley used in the production of whisky. In the distillery, some of the malt is also dried using local peat - more grassy than Islay peat, due to the moorland that we find on the mainland.
    • Nose
Peel of oranges, grapefruits and lemons, vanilla, caramel, dried Provencal herbs, dried ginger, weathered red wine - definitely drier than sweet, sweet fudge, oak and smoke from burnt leaves.
    • Taste
Fruity, orange-lemon, smoked, smoky, with a hint of pepper and ginger,
    • Finish
      Honey, white pepper, oak, peat

Somehow industrial in flavour. Not my dram of whisky.

In my pre-historical scoring method, it's an 8.5/10.
    • Nose
Honey (require water to open up). Oily. Light but refreshing grass.
    • Taste
Oaky & malty. Mild fruit at the back.
    • Finish
Mid finish. Strong burnt wood. Red apple.

  8. Finn2206 scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

For me the best HP from the core range looking at price-quality. The subtle smoke with red fruit and a little wood make it a great starting whisky or an entry to the world of peat.

Enjoyable. Feel the influence of Sherry, probably Sherry Oloroso. Lots of red berries, quite sweet. In the background, traces of milk chocolate and caramel. Traces of honey. Heathers. Then some citrus came out. After a while, some nuts came out. Salt and minerality.

    an easy-drinking malt
    it's perfectly alright
but I like the "old" 12er e.g. ID 173328 better, it has more "character"
    • Nose
starts thin, fresh herbs, mini red berries, minimal smoke, no longer young malt, old oak is coming, mini sherry

from 1920s: Herbs are getting stronger, slightly heather increases, some vanilla, shortbread, some smoke, slightly nutty, minimally gummy, later slightly sweet
    • Taste
      soft, round, creamy
tart, dried herbs, pastries (tart, whole grain), oak, spicy, a little more sherry becomes more, a little smoke, slightly dark caramel, chocolate ~ 60%
    • Finish
      medium long
Oak, spicy, slightly sherry, warm, becomes tart

      slightly astringent on the cheek

Seeing other people's low ratings shocked me, maybe because I didn't drink Highland park before...?
I only have one bottle of the 2015 version to compare and personally prefer the current version in comparison to the previous bottle.
Delicate aroma of dried fruit, like juicy fruit in front of the nose.
In the mouth, orange juice, dried fruit, caramel, cantaloupe and more, followed by a honey-like Highland Park signature nectar smoke.
I personally enjoy a bottle of single malt whisky at a very affordable price. So I don't have any complaints because this is a really good modern piece!
The total taste is 84 points, and the price plus does not affect the score, a total of 84 points.

Banana and honey on the nose. Behind it chocolate and light fruit (mirabelle plums?). Vanilla with water.

Slightly oily in the mouth and a touch of salt. In addition a bit spicy but overall relatively mild. Much sweeter with water.

In the finish light smoke, dark chocolate and hay. Behind it slightly fruity (orange?). Less smoky with water, but more fruity.

Nice everyday drum that could use a little more alcohol.

    Grade: 2

What is going on, HP? Why is your 10yo better than your core range 12yo? How did it come to this? Too busy digging up dead vikings from the pages of history to do quality assurance?
This should not be called Viking Honour, but Viking Funeral.
    • Nose
On the nose a greasy smokiness - a bit like in the Valkyrie, and in my opinion not very HP at all. Salt, malted barley, stale butter, some fruits, honey.
    • Taste
The taste is flat and uninspiring, but at least it lacks that dirty greasiness of the nose. Is this what happens when all the best casks that ought to be vatted here are sold as pricey singles?
    • Finish
      Swift. Faintly salty, sooty honey.

  24. Robinzon25 scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

In general, this is a good whisky, but inexpressive, with no zest at all. Even HP's signature features are blurred. This is not what you expect from the once beloved Highland Park! The numbers on the label are here for beauty. The new 12 doesn't differ much from NAS releases like Spirit of the Bear.
    • Nose
Subdued, infused with tones of gray bread and spices. Deeper - light smoke, sea and old skin. After 10 minutes, the aroma gradually began to disintegrate, and notes of caramel appeared.
    • Taste
A little oily, a little smoky, peppery, with an oaky bitterness and a decent malt component.
    • Finish
Medium duration, moderately smoked, with hints of spice, iodine and caramel in the background.

Was a big fan of the old HP12 bottlings before the Viking's Honour rebranding. It lacks depth and expressivity, compared to the great crowdpleaser it used to be. Anyway, still a proper dram with a price/quality ratio you can't argue and a good balance between the range of flavours.

a good whisky, peat aficionados will judge it too weak, but it is a very good representative of scotch in general, as it encompasses all aspects of Scotch whisky: peat, fruit, cereals, sea
    • Nose
marine, lightly smoked, malt, raisin bun, orange peel. Very pleasant and well balanced, there is no predominance of one perfume over the other
    • Taste
the peat becomes more decisive but not intrusive, a good sweet malt and a little pepper are felt
    • Finish
medium, the peat slowly goes away and remains the pleasant sweetness of the malt (biscuit?)

The last Highland Park bottle I purchased was Dragon Legend, which I liked so thought it was about time I tried the latest 12 year to see if it was worth buying a session bottle as it were?
Well it is a big, fat no from me because this is rubbish, I can`t believe this is what the distillery passes off as the opener in their core range these days.
I know it is only £25-£35, so many will say "what do expect for that sort of money"?
What I expect is something worth opening to be honest, this is just manufactured, sickly sweet, coloured and caramelised crap, it is awful. I must be honest but I was struggling to call this whisky, it tasted more like one of those dreadful 30% whisky liqueurs.
Does Highland Park really think this sort of putrid offering is the sort of thing to lure in people new to whisky, if they do. well they need to re think their strategy because I would rather drink gin than this.
The reason I am having a rant is because it was Highland Park 12 year that got me started on my whisky journey over 20 years ago, HP 12 back then meant something which was a quality, tasty dram at a reasonable price and something that could be relied upon for quality.
Highland Park management, you should hang your collective heads in shame for trying to pass this vile oversweet, tasteless and soulless whisky off as a quality dram, you have gone the way of Macallan but. at least you are a bit cheaper for your base offering I suppose. This makes Laphroaig Select look like a quality dram and Laphroaig select is rubbish too.
I got the Dragon Legend bottle when it first came out, I need to buy another one to see if they have reduced the quality in that one too.
WTF Highland Park, just WTF are you doing?

Nose: very delicate smoke, behind it citrus fruits, apple, later a little nut
Taste: nutty-chocolatey, caramelized almond, intense salt behind
Finish: salt chocolate, spices, pepper, the smoke fades, medium length
I suspect a Highland Park, even if the salt is more towards Talisker, but the smoke is far too little for that

Fairly ample and fresh nose, loaded with citrus fruits. Lemon, orange, clementine. Spices, some red fruits in the background. The peat is light, but nicely smoky. Very nice balance between this smoke and the citrus fruits, on that side it is successful. Mouth in the continuity of the nose, a solid base of peat on which rest the citrus fruits, which tend towards almost exotic fruits. Pineapple, papaya. White plum, an ounce of vanilla. Light dusting of spices. Successful finish, where the smoke emerges. A little taste of vanilla to finish. Earth and grass.

Control tasting, sometimes the notes from before the design change rausgekramt:
"Nose: welcomed with a fresh-fruity (some lemon, pear, pineapple, Haribo bear) and floral note, then mild, dry smoke and some honey and spice
Taste: Fruit (orange, pineapple), is gradually darker and sweeter (-> raisin -> chocolate), to light smoke, salt, pepper
    Finish: medium-long, pepper, cocoa-bitter, lime "
If you can leave it that way, maybe it has become a bit milder, sweeter, a little less fruit, but all in the day shaping area.

N- Opened up with upfront active sherry nuance that gives you more resin and obvious rubbery phenol characters. Followed by charred infused orange, citrus honey, as well minerality that reflect the terroir.

P- Creamy sherry notes, baileys, sweet coffee. Then a good Old Fashioned that gives a balanced of full orange and angostura mix. Tinge of honey, sweet ginger and subtle sweet smokes.

F- Short-medium, orange drops, some spices, some wood, some honey. Get a wee overloaded with orange as it goes that masked the rest.

It seems peatier than the older HP12yo. Nice, I like the peat, salt but I am also missing the heather sweetness which was really nice. Still very fine entry HP!

Decent enough dram for £25  - in fact an excellent dram at this price, especially for a 12 yr old age statemented whisky.  It's let down a little by its meagre 40%, but I like the subtle signature HP smoke in this. I bought it for the bottle - with the Celtic knot work on the bottle - thinking I'd use it for a 'solera' bottle (creating my own malt blend by adding different malts to it).

Lacks the depth and fullness of the more matured ones which I feel may not have been so noticable at a few % more abv.

    Still a decent 12YO.
    • Nose
Fresh, fruity, citrus, pineapples, green apples, oranges.

Mild but not in any way prominent peat smoke.

Sweetness of honey and a little vanilla.
    • Taste
Very mild and almost watery arrival.

A short burst of sweetness before it quickly turns to rather spicy warm.

Nuts, caramel, cinamon, maybe some smoke cured ham at the end.
    • Finish
Sweet caramel, nuts, honney sweetness with some of the spice lingering in a small inch short of medium lenght. Rather nice salty liqorice on the death.
