[May, 2017]  I had this during the Glen Scotia open day at the Campbeltown Whisky Festival.  To make it more interesting I let this stillman fight versus the distillery manager (WB id 97152).

Colour:  The manager is slightly darker (amber) than the stillman (yellow gold).  With respect to the texture the manager owns faster legs than the stillman and both have late small tears.

Nose:  The manager's nose is on a vanilla-sweet bourbon profile while the stillman offers a rather herbal and floral nose that is significantly more complex.  I like the stillman's nose much better as the manager's one is too simple (for my taste).

Mouthfeel:  The stillman arrives warming and coating in the mouth with a slight drying feeling (papers).  The manager is a little hot and peppery without any drying or bitter moments.  This round goes to the manager.

Taste:  On the palate the manager is again somewhat two-dimensional only on vanilla-sweetness and wooden notes (typical bourbon profile) while the stillman provides a broad selection of herbal, spicy and malty flavours in a fine balance.  Guess what I like more...

Finish:  The stillman's finish is long and sweeter than its palate with no bitter or drying notes.  The manager finishes in almost the same way with some hot (peppery) moments.  That is a clear draw to me!

With water the manager's dram smoothens but does not really show a lot more flavours or aromas (nevertheless I like it better that way).  The stillman opens up even further on water and offers more aromas in both the nose and on the palate (again I like it better with a fair share of water added).

Both drams are good selections out of the rather problematic Glen Scotia stock (as the old owners did not invest into this distillery at all).  After all I like the stillman more than the distillery manager (please do not take that personally, dear Iain McAlister)...
