    Source: https://leben-mit-genuss.de/hiss-south-islay-whisky Good notes, Olaf;)
    • Nose
EYE The dram in the glass shimmers golden with a hint of reddish. The shoot leaves behind thick streaks far apart that slowly run down the glass. Indications of the high alcohol content of the cask strength.

NOSE The first nose lets me trim. Which is supposed to come from Islay? From the south coast, where the distillates like to offer peaty flavors in all variations? But he brings surprisingly little smoke for my taste. Dominant I find instead malty-sweet and fruity impressions. Add a scent that reminds me of a bouquet of roses. Not heavy and beguiling in the fragrance, but rather light and fragile. The fruit I interpret as apricot, a hint of raisins, complemented by a faint scent of freshly sawn wood. Even after several minutes, after repeated pivoting of the glass, he keeps the smoke largely for himself. Let's see if he wants to surprise me with it in the mouth.
    • Taste
MOUTH As the first nipple touches my tongue, the term "oily" immediately comes to my mind. Soft and round, almost viscous, it spreads in the mouth, which causes a very pleasant feeling. Sweet fruitiness is also here in the foreground. Again the impression of malt. Obviously, a bourbon barrel has done a good job here. Apricot and a little pear form the fruity foundation under which individual raisins mix. White chocolate is present, caramel, toffee sound through before finally the smoke is light and very subtle to feel. After a few minutes in the glass, it comes out more clearly, becomes more intense in the taste. Then it is a very balanced and fascinating mixture of sweetness and light smoke.
    • Finish
NECK Again, the oily creaminess is the predominant impression. The sweetness is very present, but then passes quickly. A slightly peaty note remains medium.
CONCLUSION Okay, the whisky is not polka'n'roll, as the band HISS calls their style of music. He is rather folk, so calm and relaxed. Only nine years old, with a strong grip and yet in my opinion very well suited for Islay beginners. Anyone who has made a puff to peaty whiskys with their special flavors, should try it here. Of course, he does not achieve the depth and complexity of a Lagavulin 16. As well, he is only half as old. Nevertheless, there are approaches that make me think of this gentleman from Islay, because the HISS comes along elegantly, without being too dominant in its expressions.
