Miam, encore, d'ailleurs j'y retourne...

[May, 2017]  I had this dram during the Cadenhead 175th Anniversary tasting in Campbeltown.

The colour is pale gold and the texture shows some fast legs and just a few very late tears.  The nose is very grassy and autumn floral (hay stacks and the like) with a rich heather honey sweetness.  The first mouthfeel is coating but slightly drying (papers).  The taste is very sweet on both barley sugary and honey flavours.  It is delicious but a little one-dimensional (as so often with Littlemill).  The finish is of medium length, very sweet again with drying notes at the end (papers again).  Water smoothens the dram and releases some more aromas, I like it better that way.

A nice dram indeed but still I do not understand this recent hype about Littlemill.  When it was active (and the 15 years after its closure) no one cared about this distillery (despite some real great bottlings from the sixties, e.g. from Signatory).  And then all of a sudden a star was born???

I doubt this hype comes from the drinkers but rather from the collectors (and even more the investors) market.  So be cautious not to be trapped in a self-fulling bubble prophecy...

What a treat, and this has only just been released.

  • N: Thats some barley spirit: oily & nutty with flourishing bouquets, minted peas,.... moving around somewhat whilst the underlying relatively-soft barley grasses gradually settle.
  • T: Seamless transition from the nose to palate. Dry putty, similar [Irish] fruity style to the last dram with an aspirin-dry development [mouthfeel/taste combined],.. moving to paracetamol - dont be alarmed, its a pain-free experience.
  • F: Another bourbon-cask-beauty with a long putty-straw, green fruit=grain finish.
  • C: Beautiful 'happy place' whisky.

Scores an A-

Nose

Chalk. Coconut. Vanilla. Citrus flowers. Orange peel. Fine dust.

Taste

Rich wood. Vanilla. Stroopwaffel. Slightly floral. Bitter citrus. Barley sugar. Heavy cream.

Finish

Long. Floral. Citrus liqueur. Tingling woodspice. Cacao.

Comments

Very creamy and malty sweet. I know some people didn't like this one and preferred the Rosebank but for me this was my favourite of the 2 Lowland whiskies. Extremely pleasant and fun to drink.

A very floral, grassy  and clean Littlemill, rather dry, on hay and straw, with more fruity flavours on the palate,

Nose

Starts on a pretty conventional bourbon profile dominated by white chocolate and coconut milk, with a touch of peach. But then with some aeration it becomes absolutely fantastic, an über-generous nose of watermelon, white chocolate aplenty, poached peach, banana milkshake big time, forrest strawberries, "wet vanilla", some lime and light pepper, a dollop of one of those sweet creamy starbucks coffee, holy hell it never stops evolving. Paradisiac generosity, I can hardly describe how taking a full sniff of it feels. White raspberries, mandarine juice, soft grapefruit, some precious woods and a good whiff of star anise (almost medicinal at some point). Sublime, at least after a little breathing. The kind of nose that's so good it almost makes you wish there was nothing afterwards.

Taste

Very nice alcohol integration and texture, no water is needed. White peach syrup strikes you first, then stays in the background while other things develop : a sheer citrusy side at the start then some fresh mint tea. Watermelon chewing-gum and that funky liqueur that's called Midori Melon. Then back on some soft woodiness with that same "nutty-creamy" kind of coffee than before. What's amazing is that each and every sip feels different, there's some medicinal perfume and camphor in one, some anise in the other. Amazing.

Finish

Almost hoppy at some point, a bit like a Duvel beer. Still that little white chocolate DNA hanging around, but much more vegetal now. Ultra long and extremely vegetal, with after eight, anise, macha and a truckload of fern.

Comments

Damn. Has to be the best nose I've had in a while, hands down (but I can understand how one would feel a little let down if they didn't let it breathe). Pure sniffing pleasure. The rest is nothing short of amazing as well. Complex, changing, and above all pleasure-centered. I might have waxed a little lyrical (some might say as always), but I think it deserves it. Almost went for 93, might go for it next time.
