Nose: Oh wow! Never had *this* much umami upfront: Maggi seasoning, soy sauce, beef stock cubes, black salted liquorice, the works. Major saltiness, which I guess fits Tobermory's island character. Some crushed black pepper and charcoal as well; really hard not to think of a high-end steak fresh from the grill. Beneath all those savory notes, there is some indistinct acidity and juiciness, like freshly squeezed sour black cherries. Cassis, maybe? The port influence is undetectable to me; I would probably have guessed sherry if I had this blind. And that's a great thing as I abhor over-the-top port influence in whisky. Going by the nose, this is a winner. But let's wait and see about the...

...palate: silky smooth to begin with, then the juiciness makes its entrance, the acidity is there, and then the wood comes in, with a fine, aromatic note that is very reserved given the age. Heads into the finish pretty abruptly though. The nose becomes a bit fresher after the first sip, grassier and perhaps even somewhat herbal / floral. After some time in the glass, the nose also reveals matcha-sprinkled green tea mochi (look it up, it's a thing!). It keeps shifting, which is a definite plus. This doesn't appear to need water; it's tame on the tongue even at >46%.

The finish, though it arrives too swiftly for my taste, is very accomplished. First there's a mild and measured tanninicity, then the umami comes through again, and you're left with the consommé-style, dark, meaty aromas and a salty impression that is really lovely.

This is by far the best Tobermory I've had to date. The development could be more elaborated, but the nose and the finish work a treat. Also, a successful and unintrusive port finish, which I applaud. Would love to hear how they managed to create this cavalcade of savoriness.

light color, strange scent that I find difficult to describe. Taste: very unpleasant, the finish looks superimposed and penetratingly sweet, almost reminiscent of a PX Cask, alcohol poorly integrated, sharpness in the finish, not a pleasure for me.

  3. FritzeKrautman scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

I like the fruity, intense nose. I like the intense, fruity taste. The whisky is just strong enough to please without the alcohol becoming obtrusive. Age and maritime salty influences are audible. For me it is an excellent overall package.
    • Nose
It starts salty before red fruits follow (strawberries, currants). Oak can be clearly heard and a slight peppery sharpness. The fruits become increasingly syrupy.
    • Taste
Sweet dark, intense berry fruits, the oak is noticeable with light, pleasant bitterness. The alcohol is just right.
    • Finish
Malt and the slightly bitter oak and some pepper determine the rather long finish. The berries are still there.

    --- Blind cost ---
    • Nose
      87 87
Heavy, sweet, pungent alcohol. Brittle, burnt hazelnuts, slightly sourish fruit in the background - maybe sweet cherry, a little sugary, quite tasty but somehow one-sided.
    • Taste
      85 85
Sharp, tingling alcohol, slightly sour and a little sweet, some milk coffee, hardly bitter notes, somehow looks much thinner than the nose would expect.
    • Finish
      85 85
The mouth is still tingling with alcohol - folks, are you sure about the low% s? - A dusty mouthfeel stays behind, a little sweet, slightly sourish, slightly nut and slightly astringent, but somehow still thin.

Very nice Tobermory, great bound port, great maturity, very tingling in taste
    • Nose
Very fruity, the port is not too dominant, but the influence is noticeable, bittersweet chocolate, some tobacco, a sour raspberry lies over it, including yellow fruit, creamy, then comes a sour cherry, vanilla, beautiful, acts in the nose for me as could be a cask strength, a little mint, always nice and chocolaty
    • Taste
sweet, sour, red, raspberry, totally fruity, nice acidity, dark chocolate, have I already mentioned the nice acidity ?, really extraordinary, because the port has then but clearly and nicely slammed, nice fat, also beautiful oak influence, in the mouth acts he is really mature and set, but then you realize that it is "only" drinking strength, pleasant to drink, yet good intensity of the flavors
    • Finish
now also nuts, fruit compote, bittersweet, nice chocolaty, behind only slight sweetness and a little bitter

  6. whiskyinstitut scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Horny nose, the tongue and the finish not quite so. In cask strength, that would perhaps rather have met his very high price.
    • Nose
The port is immediately there, for Tobermory typical maritime notes join in addition, over-ripe plums, Orangeat, insanely intense fruit, sour, sweetened solid strawberries, juice orange
    • Taste
The orange juice dominate, wonderfully sweet and light, sourish, a bit brittle but not alcoholic, the oak is only very far away, Ahoibrause
    • Finish
Here a little bit of bitterness, the juice oranges are now more like orange peel, unfortunately a rather short finish

After the interesting nose comes a lot of average. Harmless. The PLV therefore does not fit.

    (Sample impression)

On the nose figs combined with blood oranges and a few squirts of lemon, but also clay, cocoa butter, leather, some cellar muff, a little flower meadow and sunflower oil.

The nose is pretty much reflected in the taste

In the finish there is an almond-tart component that tends towards marzipan with the sweetness. In the end, the journey goes in the direction of cocoa and some dark chocolate.
In the finish, however, it never becomes bitter but always pleasant.

I really like it a lot! Better than 21 year old Manzanilla! (93+)

    fair puddle
    Direct comparison to other Tobermorys
    solid and flat
somehow there was always a butter note in the background (only weak)
    • Nose
starts thin, vanilla, liquorice becomes more, old wood with polish, banana, light cherry, very fruity

      later: more vanilla, linoleum floor
    • Taste
      round and strong
very dark or burnt-on malt, light oak, spicy, liquorice becomes more, light maggie, a very light note of caramel, a strange note
    • Finish
      short to medium long
Liquorice, slightly tart, spicy, aromatic herbs, heavily roasted coffee, becomes bitter

He has rather sweet red fruits and is also something flowery. Even this Tobermory has these notes, which I can not explain (goes in the direction of oranges, carnations and leather), but I liked. But overall it's a bit more delicate than the 21yo Oloroso (WID: 104713). Maybe too delicate for me. A little more intensity would suit him well.
