  1. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

It's delicious. Dirty, strong, crisp, intense, lots of aromas ... not round, harmonious, easy drinking. But 85-90 € are a little too self-confident, because I still miss the last kick, something special, and strength.
    • Nose
after a while it becomes softer, velvety, toffee, milk chocolate, raisins, a hint of cinnamon, brown sugar
    • Taste
strong, crispy, tangy - that's earth again, salt, citrus fruits, to it biscuits, some pepper, wood, nut, candy ... unlike other tasters, I find it not creamy, not homogeneous, rather "confused", but not in the negative sense, but more like muesli or trail mix - mixed, grainy, meaty, what to bite
    • Finish
long, strong ... on the palate a tart sweet cocoa sugar beet syrup note, then long heat, pepper, salt, oak

Not a daily dram because of its somewhat dirty, coarse notes. But also very intense, interesting and delicious.

Starts slightly musty, some leather and then red fruits, peaches, cherries and vanilla gradually appear. A slight hint of mint, honey and balsamic. More and more flavors are added over time. The salty-maritime note is particularly present after the first sip.
    • Taste
      87 87
Spicy start, some pepper, strawberries, cocoa... a nice, oily mouthfeel. Some bitterness slowly comes from the wood and mixes with citrus fruits. No burning, the alcohol is super integrated.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium finish. A nice interplay of bitterness, some acidity and honey and liquorice.

An overall beautiful, interesting malt, although in my opinion too expensive with a current price of over 80 €.

Strongly sour, dark sherry note, somehow tasty, and yet almost "over the top". There is also a certain stable note.

In the mouth there is an absolute contrast program: instead of the dark, sour notes, light sweetness sizzles over the tongue. At first really surprisingly sweet, soon accompanied by a tangy wood spiciness, then there is a lot of nuts and a pleasant coffee is added to the finish.

The finish is dominated by sherry, spices and dried fruits, the sharpness of the wood also remains a bit, a little bit vinous. The finish is medium long, maybe a little too short for my taste.

Exciting malt, varied, something special and probably nothing for every day. But in any case: Somehow tasty.

    • Nose
Deep, dark sherry aromas fill the air. Ripe plums, some dried fruit, raisins, dark caramel, forest honey, coffee, wet leaves and a touch of must and must.
    • Taste
Continues the story on the palate. Above all raisins, the caramel-like sweetness is now also slightly tart and behind it the bitter musty, which now looks earthier.
    • Finish
The finish is milder with cream caramel and a sweetish freshness not too long-lasting.

Toffee, dark fruits, sweet spices and not so enjoyable leathery sulphur

    Notes from a blind tasting.

Headstrong, it leaves me at a loss. For me an inharmonious nose, the sour fruit notes run right through to the finish. Water smooths the edges a bit, but also makes for a very dry finish. Overall, it is less of my taste.
    • Nose
      81 81
Surprisingly fresh and hot on the nose, sour and unripe fruits (mirabelle plums, grapes), fresh grass, somehow dirty.
    • Taste
      84 84
Sweet start with cooked fruit, then the unripe and sour fruit note prevails again. Over time, pleasant oak flavor comes through, a light pepper note joins it.
    • Finish
      82 82
Medium to long, warming, continued with the sour fruits, dark chocolate.
With water: Significantly drier and astringent, even becomes bitter.

Delicious salt almond taste, fresh rye bread, nut oil, everything a bit funky and strangely bitter. It's okay, but too expensive for what's on offer. And although I like Manzilla ripening, this malt doesn't really convince me across the board.

A quite peculiar expression from Tobermory craft masters. Manzanilla is not an obvious finish, nor a sherry like any other else.
The marriage between the Spanish casks and the breezy character of the distillery is just perfect: a full bodied malt, with lots of warm honey and fruity (citrus first, then peach mostly dried grapes), velvety and subtly spicy on the palate.
Its richness of details and bittersweet nuances makes it seem older than it is, displaying a very pleasant mouthfeel. Another brilliant expression from one of my favourite distillery, never disappointing.

Tobermory 2008 MMcK VS Tobermory 12y Manzanilla Finish

they certainly have the same dna, when talking about the cheesy cow dung and mineral notes you get. still, the 2008 MMcK shows the distillery character much better by being held in a washed out cask for only 9 years. the 12y old manzanilla finish seems to have been finished in a very active cask, as the sweet wine input is not to be dismissed.

when you are a tobermory fan, you will like both of them. still, i would sa that tobermory is not a beginners dram and you should be into this style of whisky. besides of the cheesy cow dung, some sulphury parts come in play (which i often get with craigellachie for example). both nice drams. however, the bit older and manzanilla finished 12 year old won this round for me.
    • Nose
      88 88
the manzanilla cask is very dominant here, especially when comparing it to the washed out hogshead from the 2008 MMcK. sweet wine notes, combined with the cheesy cow dung tobermory notes. this is nice :) some fruit here and there, honeyed apricots. here the cask and the spirit balance each other rather well.
    • Taste
      86 86
you know it is a tobermory, although the manzanilla round it up a bit. very floral, lavender and stuff. maybe some tropical fruits? tongue numbing.
    • Finish
      85 85
rather harsh. very young and woody. i would have never expected this finish after this nose and taste. unfortunately kind of disappointing in the first place. still, leaves a long lasting layer on your tongue which somehow satisfies me. i am a bit ambivalent on this finish i must say.

Strong and fruity with a dirty note. It fits exactly as it is. Unfortunately, I can't see the manzanilla finish.
    • Nose
It's completely different, the first impression is dirty and musty. This is followed by a great orange note and salt. A little caramel and the oak can be clearly felt. Later a touch of peach and honey. That's fun.
    • Taste
Oily on the tongue and a strong start with lots of pepper. Nice fruity notes of oranges and peaches with nice spiciness as a contrast.
    • Finish
Here, too, the great oranges and peaches, long-lasting oak seasoning and salt.

    • Taste

    - from a sample
A flawless malt really. I would've scored 90 or higher easily, if only it didn't carry an uber-premium pricetag.
Even for 46.3 % it has a big oily body. Sweet and sour profile with some astringency in the back palate and finish. Loads of fruits, apricot jam, papaya, kiwi. Almonds and nuttiness in the undertones. Both the nose and taste are nicely integrated, but only in the taste it reveals it's talents. There's so much happening I have a hard time identifying more notes specifically, but they hint at something more.

The barrels seem to have had 1-2 assignments before. The Manzanilla keg does not give him the sweetness he needs for a nice overall package. Solid, but rather one of the more modern malts ..... drunk and already forgotten.
    • Nose

  52. Totoro scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

On first impression, there's a sweet-sour whiff of something lactic and musty on the nose, almost sulphury and reminiscent of cabbage or baby vomit. Probably due to sulphurous compounds resulting from the distillation process ("spirit sulphur"). Once past that, there's both fruitiness (apples, apricots) and sweetness (bubblegum and/or popcorn), a certain vinuous aspect and a very muted sense of oak in the background. Also a nuttiness that at times seems to shade into aromas of leather and/or polish. Going by the nose, I'm not expecting a whole lot of tanninicity, but rather a juicy, spirit- and (wet?) cask-finish-driven affair. Let's see...

Mmmmmh, good attack: juicy, oily, and sweet, with an immediate sequitur in the form of prickly oak (so I was wrong on that one) and a slight sting from the alcohol. So yes: this is immediately yummy and makes you yearn for a second sip before the first one has even gone down. Very juicy, lively, and impactful. As often happens, the nose also improves after taking the first sips, becoming more warm, welcoming, and sherry-infused. So are there only good things to say about this one? Sadly, no: for even if the initial impact is really eventful and thick, the overall development remains somewhat curt. Too swiftly, taste and aromas drop off a cliff, leaving behind slight heat and, at most, some tingling citrus. Not exactly the platonic ideal of a whisky finish, if you catch my drift.

Verdict: substantial, but feels a bit curtailed.
But, to be fair, even if the whole thing is rather front-loaded, with pretty much the whole experience taking place in the beginning, it's still a very entertaining and flavorful whisky. I'm glad I tried this (even if I won't buy a bottle), and it has certainly intrigued me enough to now be on the lookout for more modern Tobermories (I hope that's the correct plural) to try.

This is a very interesting variant of sherry, and most probably a fascinating alternative to dirtyish heavily PX-treated hogsheads with watery and sulphury outcomes. Manzanilla - why not?
    • Nose
Delicious, earthy, salty, dry and rich sherry. The Manzanilla character shines through, but the interplay between the cask and the dough-y, sea-breez-y Island character of Tobermory equals more than the sum of its parts. Mushrooms, almonds, beef stock, lovage, sea salt. With a few drops of water I finally get something sweeter, with peach tarte, baked apples and candied walnuts.

Very fine nose, kind of old fashioned, but also unexpected and rarely met with.
    • Taste
The whisky enters the tongue sweet and sour and salty, all at the same time, and very bold. Full-bodied and oily, with pistachios, dry dark chocolate sprinkled with sea salt and orange zest, lovage, a hint of menthol, sea weed, some yeast and a decent wood spice from good, active casks.

After about 10 minutes and with a drop of water it gets creamier and more complex, but loses a bit of its bold mouthfeel. This is clearly extremely well-made and a good two or three steps up from the usual Tobermory standard bottlings. I like it a lot.
    • Finish
Long, salty, dry, nutty and yeasty. Satisfying.

I had this dram first during a blind taste event (Proef Olympics Ledendag 2) as the 8th (and last) dram (after the welcome dram), and later on re-evaluated a bit i had left in the sample bottle.
    • Nose
when i had this one blind, i had no clue what this was... now on second evaluation i can recognize some wild Tomermory.
quite a complex nose, it starts with white chocolate with cherries, and garbage bags... as well as some sea salt/minerals and vanilla cupcakes.
    • Taste
Chocolaty, with oranges, nuts, apples, banana and some oriental spices. It feels quite thick and oily and coats the mouth.
    • Finish
strong and medium long finish. the oily coat remains with the taste of a mixed nuts melange. Think of sugared nuts, some slightly bitter walnuts and some spicy nuts. Contrasting the oily nuts are some bitter sun-fruits notes, as grapefruit, lemon and oranges.

As a fan of Tobermory, I am a bit divided in this bottling. On the one hand, wild and stormy as I like it on the other hand, the spiciness is a bit overused and leaves him in my view as unbalanced. From Manzanilla barrel I would have expected more influence. In the nose comes too little and in the finish he says goodbye far too early. I miss sweetness and fruitiness that could have been a great counterpoint to the spice. But he is the way he is, which is ok even if he does not fully meet my taste - 04.04.2018
    • Nose
A wild-fruity nose meets, sea salt, algae, grassy, dry hay, lime abrasion, orange, apricot, red berries, brandy bean, biscuit, the spice is clearly superior to the sweetness and a little too restrained for my taste
    • Taste
Surprisingly mild and everything but stormy, soft and sweet he wanders in the mouth and he gets more and more oily with time, the alcohol is wonderfully involved, orange, apricot, biscuit, bitterness of walnuts, the fruitiness is less present on the palate, dominate here the maritime and grassy notes, a spicy-aromatic oak aroma remains at the end
    • Finish
      medium

A beautiful fabric, very great barrel, not the hint of a false note, everything great complex, delicious and juicy and fruity, very tasty and yet with nice corners and edges. What a pleasure that I got the bottle cheap. A real treat. Tobermory can do it!
    • Nose
Nice, clean and clear sherry nose. Immediately very fruity. Oranges, pears, peaches and honeydew melon, some mint behind. Very gentle, fresh and round.
    • Taste
Great, sugar-sweet start. Very fruity and oily, wonderfully integrated alcohol, great creamy mouthfeel. Sweetish and tart notes of orange and honey first, then tingling sensation on the edge of the tongue, slight ginger and chili sharpness, a few grapes, very slow transition into the delicate bitterness of a dark chocolate candied orange peel, later bergamot (Earl Gray tea). Everything is very round, soft, oily, spicy, sweet, sour and spicy. Great great compexity. Very juicy impression, extremely fruity-juicy and then slowly drier.
    • Finish
Beautiful, soft, long finish, no tannins, exactly metered barrel influence, not too much and not too little, not too bitter, yet spicy, not too furry, but still nice and dry. Sweet oranges linger a bit longer in the mouth, as well as the gentle tingling of chillies.

Good Drinks - bourbon and sherry tones are specially suited to the scent of hay, and they stand and taste with citrus fruits, grains and delicate cravings. In the aftermath of the initial rise of the raisins it is drying up and it ends on a spicy conclusion

    Conclusion and pictures on: https://tomtrinkt.de
    • Nose
Hui, the nose stands out clearly from the "competition". On the one hand very fruity with sugar sweet notes, on the other side dirty, wild and with fine associations of sea salt and algae. The fruity part is dominated by sweet peaches, pineapples, mandarins, lemons and oranges. Hints of ripe forest berries linger in the background. Caramel, walnuts, oak spices, tobacco leaves and salt complete the multi-layered nose. Even after 15-20 minutes, I discover more flavors. Makes you want to more!
    • Taste
The complexity continues seamlessly in terms of taste. The mouthfeel is very oily at first, warming and at the same time stimulating saliva flow. The alcohol content of 46.3% is very well integrated and ensures an intensive transport of aroma. The sweet notes are present immediately, but also spices / herbs and wood notes follow almost without delay. Very interesting! The taste of juicy oranges stands out, but peaches, dried fruits and caramel sweets are also present. On the side of heavy aromas, I perceive a noticeable oak spiciness, followed by herbs, salty dark chocolate, light roasted aromas and nuts. Wonderfully multi-layered and balanced.
    • Finish
Medium to long. The sweet fruits set the last accents on the palate, before clearly maritime and spicy notes take over the flavor upper hand. Dark chocolate, herbs and oak dominate the finish at the end. A slight dryness occurs, but without becoming unpleasant or furry on the tongue.

Another wonderful tobermory, the average quality of the distillery is both UA and OA admirable and I say that as not necessarily the greatest lover of very salty whiskys.
    • Nose
Pineapple, compote, the slightest smoke and salt from the sea (much weaker than the 10's), sweetness from the sugar candy, yellow plums, own sherry notes, interesting, not too easily arranged nose, but quite arouse interest
    • Taste
Salty compote from peach, plums, orange peel, willow-touch, algae oak, very own but beautiful, later he has almost a little of champagne, steamed fish with lemon cream sauce
    • Finish
Medium to long, salty white wine, very yummy, subtle fruit remains
