This 12 is a real hit and miss for me, unfortunately this is a miss. It feels younger, little bit hot and one-dimensional. It also lacks a little freshness other batches  and the 10 ob have.

Süß, rauchig, Lagerfeuer, süßer roter Apfel, Birne, Erde, Batch 14 hat deutlich weniger Apfel, dafür saftigen Dosenpfirsich, in Batch 15 geht es Richtung Geißblatt/Fliederblüte.

Taste

Der süßeste bisher, rote Kirschen, Fliederblüte, Lagerfeuerrauch zieht vorbei. Batch 14 hier auch etwas "heller" Richtung Orange/Pfirsich.

Finish

Lang, fruchtig, deutlicher Rauch. Hier geben sich die beiden nicht viel. Kaffee, hier etwas Salz, leicht trocken.

Comments

86 Punkte!

N- Dried leaf, with somehow familiar soft sulphuric notes. Underlay with rock sugar, spices and resinous sherry bites. Just like the other new batch of Springbank, the Longrow and the Hazelburn as well, it seems there is a change of direction on the flavours profile for the distillery, which make it sweeter, rounder and fruitier, I am sure with all good intention. But for me who like the unique Springbank derived on the old batch, am feeling disjointed when tried some of these new releases. This is just 'another whisky' kind of ordinary dram...well, may be is just me.

P- Yes, some unique meaty and sulphur notes lurking, what a pity that there were once so dominant on the previous 12YO. Creamy, sweet and solidly build, but narrow on flavours, this is not going anywhere.

F- Medium, rounded with liquorice and cocoa sweet.

On the nose, banana and wheat beer. Barley sugar.

In the mouth, minerally peat, like a good old fashioned whisky from back in the day.....an art which has been forgotten by most distillers......

I love this whisky because it is obviously excellent and like a good old fashioned single malt from the 60's or 70's.

It only prevents being scored in the 90's on the finish for me because of its dryness which is perhaps the hardest challenge of any great whisky. I think only the 90's and early 2000's Highland Parks managed this magical feat of balancing moreishness and dryness. This hangs too much on the woody dryness.

Nose

Light smoke and cow dung (yea...some burned matches), oranges, some minerals, sherry (more dominant compared to other batches), caramel, leather.

Taste

Cow dung and light smoke (you feel like in the middle of a meadow at the Alps with some cows nearby as in all other batches). Sweet, some wasabi.

Finish

Medium to long. Sweet peaches, caramel, salt, oranges.

Comments

In my opinion very similar to some Bruichladdich and Port Charlotte whiskys. It's the neighbourhood. The cow, the citrus, the sea. With water even more complex.

Concerning price/performance ratio: 9/10
