[May, 2017]  I had this dram during the Campbeltown Whisky Festival today.

This cask did no good to the usually excellent Arran spirit, it is hardly drinkable and not to my liking...
    • Nose
      80 80
The nose is very shy and closed, even after adding some water there is not much going on in my olfactory cells. Just some slight sherry aromas but these could be imaginary too due to the dark colour of the dram. Strange, I hardly remember a dram with such a shy nose...
    • Taste
      79 79
The taste is quite shy as is the nose and drying out (astringent again), after adding water some nice milk chocolatey notes are released at least.
    • Finish
      82 82
The arrival on the palate is unpleasant - astringent and bitter. The finish is rather short and again bitter, water improves this and releases the chocolatey flavours again...

It smells and tastes quite old and dusty. Not as vibrant as Arran usually is. Tasted at the Wicked Whisky Compangie Arran tasting.
    • Nose
Quite dusty, fruity, mainly apples and apricot. Some lychee.
    • Taste
Quite dusty, mouldy, grassy and barley. Meant in a good way.
    • Finish
Green apple, honey and yes, dust.

    Style: Fruity, Oily and Spicy

    Nose:

Fragrant apples, peaches and apricots lightly painted with honeycomb wax. Candied fruits adding more richness to the core. Lemon aloe vera, a powerful surge of spice, especially considering it is 52.4%. Then we have ginger, peppermint and a touch of nutmeg to finish. Fruity and spicy.

    Thoughts:

Starts with a spicy cut on the palate, followed by apple cubes, tropical fruits and some grassy eau de vie to give a herbal tone. The drier facet begins to show - ginger shreds, nutmeg and coffee beans. Cider with a lick of salty butter. Malt biscuits towards the end.

    Finish:

More yellow butter notes lingering, apple pie and red fruits fainting slowly.

    Thoughts:

A pleasant small batch offering from the Cadenhead. The symmetrical contribution from the Sherry and Boubon cask gives a comfortable balance to the expression. Relatively dense stone fruit sweetness bolstered up a satisfactory, oily texture. Not your usual Arran I guess, which is generally lighter, but I quite like this, tick!

    Only with water is the beautiful fruit note and the subtle maritime character better;

The taste of this Arran doesn't agree with the price of the bottle for me.
    • Nose
Sweet, fresh grass, little wood and alcohol.
    • Taste
Strong, sour orange taste, little creamy, astringent, chocolate and pepper.
    • Finish
Hot, pepery finish, astringent and bitter.

By far the worst Arran I have ever drunk.
    • Nose
Do I smell something? Not really. Sherry, dried apricot. Disappointing
    • Taste
Also nothing special. Mouth contracts due to the bitterness, alcohol is clearly to taste. Slightly nutty, sherry.
    • Finish
Medium. Just as complex as nose.

  8. Bishlouk scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

In this Arran, wood dominates from beginning to end. First green and fresh, it is becoming increasingly dry and dusty. The typical fruitiness of Arran is therefore relegated (a little too much) to the background.
    • Nose
Fresh, fruity, woody, and dry at the same time. Many green, softwoods. Candied white grapes. A slight woody smoke. Plant drought grows with time.
    • Taste
Sour grapes, a hint of vanilla, a handful of spicy spices. Apple appears, accompanied by dry bitter wood. Sweet notes grow on time.
    • Finish
Alcohol is more present. The wood dries out the mouth, leaving dust behind. The spices persist.

On the nose, orange, wood, pepper and important floral sensation and a return of custard (vanilla).
    2nd:
freshness of the malt, grassy side, white fruit, some hull.
