    Enthusiasm: 3/5 (Nose with water: 4/5) Whisky n ° 1745
    • Nose
Leather, ripe fruit, brine, strong malt "à la Bruichladdich". With water, malt and lime. More legible. Mellowed. Smoke well integrated.
    • Taste
On the palate, very spicy attack, dominated by pepper. Always lively after 10 years! The spices and peat are so assertive that they prevent any development of other aromas, silencing Grenache! An addition of water just tames the beast! The texture is a bit sweet.
    • Finish
Final fruity (finally) and especially peppery.

Tried this at the distillery a few years ago and was immediately enthusiastic, if only to be able to try an Octomore with 10 years of maturation. Purchased a bottle a couple of months later and was able to confirm the very positive impressions this first made on my palate. The partial use of Grenache Blanc wine casks, complementing the ex-Bourbon cask maturation, does not push to the forefront at all, but successfully adds some subtle sweet fruit notes on the palate. So any fears I had of this being obviously too "winey" in make up were allayed. Bravo!

This opens beautifully with a welcoming nose. There's a clear note of sweet malted barley interweaving with some salty brine and predominantly lemon citrus notes. The peat smoke is quite mild to begin with and well integrated with the other components. With time in the glass I notice some light oaky spice from the fresh bourbon barrels and just a hint of white wine.

A beautiful silky and sweet arrival; the alcohol (57.3%) is seamlessly integrated into this welcoming opening. On the development I get a honey-based sweetness, alternating with a white wine sweetness which is refined and certainly not cloying. The malt notes continue to provide the backbone on the palate, while, with time to open up, balancing spices come to the fore aided by some relatively firm - but not bitter - tannins. Only after the addition of water does the sweetness of the wine casks emerge more clearly. It softens the alcohol, of course, but this is a matter of personal preference.
    • Finish

The finish is relatively long but just not quite as intense as the nose and palate. Still, this is a cracker of a peated whisky, and it definitely showcases what Octomore can do if given a few extra years in the maturation warehouse.
