Extradry! Very intense and blatant aromas between smoldering and acrid smoke, salty barbecue and almond puree. All in all, too much of everything for me, too rough, too dry, too ostentatious. But still an unforgettable experience.

Sherry and peat in a very happy marriage.
    • Nose
      90 90
Although the peat is apparent, it is the perfumed side that sets this whisky apart. Almost flowery in a good way. Also burnt coffee and raisins.
    • Taste
      88 88
Nutty and dry. The mouthfeel is coating and soft like oil. Cacao, boerenjongens and pink pepper.
    • Finish
      90 90
Long and persistent. First the peat and then menthol and roasted almonds.
Really long finish for a whisky this age!

A Smoked Bacon Hammer: an exciting Highlander featuring a complex concert of smokyness, sweetness and spicyness. Special, rich, nicely complex with surprising depth. Certainly a perfect choice for winter days, and summer days :-). Not everybody will like this powerful mix.
    • Nose
Starts off with smoked Bacon&Ham, dry sherry notes, oranges and raisins, honey and bonfire smoke. Slightly medical with herbs and hints of cough syrup in the back.
    • Taste
Bold and intense; quite warming. Smoky and spicy at first with bacon, pepper, ginger and oak. Sweet and tender fruity notes of cherries and plums arrive, nicely mixed with dry sherry. Oily and minerally with phenols, hints of salt and cough syrup towards the finish.
    • Finish
Intense, long, warm and subtle sweet with plums and hints of sugar. Drying smoke on the tail with a bitter herbal touch.

  6. EinSpatzUnterVielen scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

    Very intense, but not mine.
    • Nose
Kassler, engine oil, leather, disinfectant, iodine swabs, wet pebble soil mixture, camphor, thyme, salty liquorice, burnt popcorn, eraser, cowshed, tar, somewhere a tire burns ...
    • Taste
dry, very peppery, tar, cloves, coffee, raw fish, smoked pork, burnt popcorn, licorice, very very strong thyme tea, camphor, the tarmac on the tongue is getting heavier, a hint of blueberry, burnt caramel, green tea perfumed with roses, extremely dry, almost not fruity, ashes
    • Finish
the tar stays on the tongue and on the palate for a long time, burned all kinds of stuff, very dry ..., rose perfume ...

    • Nose
Lactic caramel and grassy peat. Heather. Woodspice. Cherry cordial. Brass cleaner. Lavender.
    • Taste
Quite ashy. Smokey caramel. Farmy notes. Slight woody bitterness, allspice and nutmeg. Slightly medicinal.
    • Finish
Long. Lactic caramel, smoke, ash. Lots of woodspice and oak. Salted caramel. Light medicinal.

A certified bomb of sherry and peat. Proper stuff, and a great pick by the people from Kirsch Whisky.
    • Nose
Aromas of barbecue and smoked peppers, as well as cigar tobacco, soot and leather. Very savoury, plenty of brine, but there's also some room left for blackcurrants.
    • Taste
Big on the peat, slightly medicinal, whiffs of iodine. Pinch of black pepper too. The spirit is oily, which I always find a plus. A touch of orange zest and aniseed, as well as some oak. Nicely balanced.
    • Finish
Drying, with peat, rubber and brine.

  9. KayMeertens scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
First sulphur like gherkin or sauerkraut. Peat, paprika powder, blueberry, cherry, caramel, Hamka's (ham & cheese crisps), minerals and malt. With water gingerbread.
    • Taste
Very spicy. Paprika powder, peat, blueberry, caramel, cherry, mocha and tea

My first Ballechin. Great peated whisky. I love it. Edradour just continues to amaze me. Tasted a sample on day four of the US Blind Tasting Competition 2017. My guess was a Kilchoman 05-yo @ 60%.
    • Nose
Peat, salt, overripe blue grapes, barn, mint
    • Taste
Sweet smoke, peat, ash, ripe red fruit
    • Finish
Very long, slightly bitter, not drying. Smoke covered red fruit dies slowly on the tongue.

  12. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Maybe the driest whisky I've drunk so far. No to little sweet notes. Somehow exciting and quite delicious.
    • Nose
Spicy, dry, lavender, rose water, thyme, peat smoke, slightly fleshy, oak.
    • Taste
Salty, spicy, oak, pepper, peat, a hint of sherry, but ultra-dry, no sweetness
    • Finish
Pepper, oak, thyme, lavender, smoke, peat.

  13. St. Pauli scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

The nose is making a less integrated impression than the rest of the whisky. It is a style that has to appeal to you, otherwise it's hard to like it I guess.
    • Nose
The nose doesn't make a sophisticated and integrated impression. Peat smoke, twigs, heather, burnt rubber, plain wood, bath salt, roasted almonds, raisin.
    • Taste
Perfumed, with a lavender/heather note. Then, dry and earthy peat, stewed plums, peach, raisin, vanilla, chocolate, intense spices, plain oak.
    • Finish
Moderate, and rather dry (although I've had worse). Still quite some burnt rubber, oak, and spice. A hint of leather and fruit.

Blindtasting I do not like the smoke
    • Nose
some smoke, sweet, light leather, earth, peanuts, tar
    • Taste
soft on the palate, the alcohol is pricking something, gum

Complement: So long is the bottle emptied and the oxidation has really done the whisky very well. But he is still so mega dry and it just leaches the complete water out of the body ;-)

I like this in the meantime and welcome the dry sweetness paired with this different kind of smoke.

a massive malt that has strong flavors for itself, a lot of burned stuff, which you might like, but overall less complex than expected
    • Nose
greasy smoke, road salt, bicycle hose, wet gravel, also removes sweet, burnt rubber, a worn leather bag, diluted it is slightly fresher, ginger, no fruit, green walnuts, raw ham, dark mushy strawberries, eraser
    • Taste
heavy and spicy, particularly tingling on the tip of the tongue, barely fruits, hazelnuts, milk chocolate, slightly less smoke, roasted almonds
    • Finish
again more smoky but not very engaging at first, dry, spicy, later again intense burnt notes and then neat reheating

With its strong salt note, it is a fairly typical Manzanilla matured whisky. The combination with the extreme sweetness makes him very interesting. Ups, I had already in the glass once and valued at 86, today he would get 87 points ...
    • Nose
Smoked salted almonds, served with pork roast, a superappetitliche Rauchnote.
    • Taste
Extremely sweet, very strong, a slightly perfumed top note, the smoky note goes down a bit in the taste, very salty. A prime example of alcohol involvement, he is not exactly.
    • Finish
A lot of finish is not there, he just sounds relatively quickly. Something bad.

    as a package a good 12y
    • Nose
Vanilla, glue, salt, raisins, nuts, the adhesive note is dominant at the beginning of cool ethereal Kamphernote iodine iodine and the iodine is the salt in the smoke the overall concept of the nose suffers from the dominant adhesive note
    • Taste
Here, too, bourbon notes and sharpness on the palate and on the tongue melt the beautiful notes in the smoke of this change of sweet and salty from bitter and soft, fruity and wood, moist and dry very pleasant I expect that from Manzinall
    • Finish
medium for a 12y pretty neat and still the interplay

An exciting, powerful Ballechin with dominant bacon flavors. It is special and edgy and for lovers of earthy and dry whiskys because fruit flavors you look here in vain - 14.01.2017
    • Nose
Beautiful, pleasant Ballechin smoke, fried bacon, popcorn, caramelized sugar, dry red wine, sherry, polish
    • Taste
Very creamy, powerful, black pepper, ginger, earthy, salty, herbs, cold ashes, tobacco, old leather, mineral, motor oil, incredibly dry, espresso, toasty, at the end remains the cold, dry ash

different, very different. I was mentally already pouring away after the first nose, but he is still very funny and interesting. Can not say today if I like him, but he has his moments. Omit water! Re-tasting in a few weeks, until then well-intentioned 84 p
    • Nose
Pur: at first very stinky, he almost lost at first. No sulfur, rather cowshed. If you are tormented, he starts to please. Very dry sherry note, marzipan, milk chocolate and cheap cola ice cream from the bag - already melting. Later new leather and espresso. With water: auto repair, engine oil and rubber.
    • Taste
Pure: here very very greasy and intense smoky notes, semi-raw tuna steak, a bit salty and peppery spicy. Almond liqueur, tiramisu, coffee afterwards. Different. With water: cold ashes, bitter, bland colanote.
    • Finish
medium long, sweet and spicy with stale cola.

An exciting Highlander displaying a fascinating interplay of smokiness, sweetness and spiciness. Rich, nicely complex with depth. While oily, earthy and greasy neat, water opens this dram underlining its fruity and sweet character. Certainly a perfect choice for cold winter days.
I thank Kirsch Whisky Import for the sample and the photograph!

The nose starts off with smoked ham, dry sherry notes, oranges and raisins, acacia honey and bonfire smoke. Slightly medicinal with herbs and hints of cough syrup in the back.

    • Finish
The finish is long, warm and subtle sweet with plums and hints of barley sugar. Drying smoke on the tail with a bitter herbal touch.WITH WATER: On the nose, water tames the smoky and fruity character, bringing more sooty flavours to the fore. More sweet and less spicy on the palate with lingering fruity notes of cherries and plums. Slightly warming with a soapy touch. The finish is a bit shorter, soapy with smoke, and a touch of fruity sweetness.

An exciting whisky whose nose and taste play a nice interplay. Parallel tasting with Ballechin 2004/2016 12yo Burgundy Single Cask
    • Nose
Fine-spicy smoke, mixed with a sweetness that seems artificial (candied fruits?), But which makes a very tasty impression. Burnt almonds and caramelized sugar crystallize after a while. Good balance between sweetness and smoke.
    • Taste
Strong smoke and bitter fruit sweetness. Tart wild herbs and dark chocolate. The dry and ashy smoke is preserved for a long time. With the tart touch on his tongue, he contrasts beautifully with the nose, which rather played in the candy corner.
    • Finish
Medium to long, dry, smoky, with tart herbs, oak and the sweetness of fermented berries.

  38. Noface83 scored this whisky 88 points Specialist

Nose: smoked ham, earthy / dry fino-sherry notes, salt liquorice, orange peel glazed with honey, wet oak wood Interesting nose but not quite as great as the Burgundy. I miss a little sweetness and fruit.
Taste: wow is dry again. Nice mouthfeel. Oak, pepper, herbs and spicy honey blend with the aromas of the nose and smoked bacon to create a very own but great overall taste of the long and warm finish. It becomes a little more fruity and sweeter with water - so it's worthwhile to play with water carefully.
Great whisky when it comes to earthy and greasy flavors. I miss a bit of fruit / sweetness to raise it to 90 pts.

If you like that, that's a well made, delicious and tasty drop, but not a high flyer. Enough depth is available, for an amazing 12 years even. With 100, - € he is priced, however, in my view a bit too high.
    • Nose
Nice, soft smoke at the beginning, after a few seconds, phenolic notes and salt are added. A touch of dark candied fruit tries in vain to penetrate the surface. After a while, add roasted nuts and a lot of disinfectant. The dark fruits are there, but the way forward remains blocked. Dark gravy, brandy, a hint of red wine. The overall picture can not completely convince me. Heat brings freshly disinfected GDR railroad car, chemical cleansers in pure culture. The whole thing leveled with time again and works in the end quite harmonious.
    • Taste
Dark caramel, toasty aromas and salt, with a slight tingle and a few herbs, in the mouth it looks much rounder. The alcohol is perfectly integrated, because nothing burns. The mouthfeel is nice oily.
    • Finish
The finish also has many roasted aromas, the dark residual sweetness is quickly gone, some acid remains in the back of the mouth, it dries quickly. Overall, medium.

  40. Kaltduscher scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Wow, a really great and complex malt.
    • Nose
Bacon with beautiful smoked notes. Salt. Minerals. Moist earth. Behind it sweet flavors reveal themselves. Forest honey. Nougat. Dried orange peel. Some eucalyptus - together with the slightly medical notes of peat smoke, associations with cough syrup.
    • Taste
Thick, the malt slides through the mouth. Instantly spicy notes. Pepper. Wet wood. Sugared ginger. Smoked bacon. Mineral flavors. Beet juice. Again cough syrup.
    • Finish
Long. Salted nuts. Lemon peel. Eucalyptus. Dry and bitter finish with a lot of oak. The smoke is perfectly integrated and shows again with notes of smoked bacon and campfire.

    I like it really well!
    • Nose
Black Forest ham, smoke, earthy, cherries, almond oil, nutmeg, lime zest, orange marmalade on butter toast. with a little water, the fruit notes become more intense, especially the orange, and now there is also forest honey
    • Taste
With a little water Strong and spicy onset, warm, sweet and oily, ginger, nutmeg, toasted almonds, oranges, salt, smoke, butter biscuits
    • Finish
Pretty long, warming, roasted almonds, smoke, honey, some ginger sharpness
