Tasty and tasty, if a bit special
    • Nose
You get what you expect according to the data: The slight sharpness of the Arran and wonderfully combined with a very subtle fruitiness of sherry. Ginger, sweet oranges with very slightly bitter notes, sweet cucumber juice, slightly mineral
    • Taste
Sweet, then creamy with light citrus notes, a bit salty or mineral
    • Finish
Somewhat bitter with the dry mineral notes and some oak spice, otherwise creamy, the cucumbers come back easily

Not really my case, a little disappointing about the 2nd Fill Oloroso, I do not have the right sherry taste, nor do I really notice Arran, two doubles minus, a drinkable piece of average quality overall
    • Nose
A little grainy, fruit cake with apricots, plums, etc. and a hint of alcohol with light sherry behind, with water comes a nice herbal note and it gets more balanced, with time you begin to understand the name of the caramelized onions
    • Taste
Here comes the title of the whisky first full, onion, a little vegetable garden, then raisins, plums, all in a Toffeesüße and with a small edge, licorice, fruit seeds and vinegar
    • Finish
Short to medium, sweetish and vegetal, a bit strange and warming

N: A 2nd refill oloroso cask is a fine thing indeed. Salted caramel (oh that's SMWS noted too), nutty sweet rice and soft floury grain notes along with a chocolate-fruit ice-cream topping sauce - ah it's the raspberry ripple sauce I'm getting that SMWS mentioned on the palate. Youthful with a confidently tender cask influence.
T: Big, sharpish-prickly arrival, damn! Best to wait for the unravel on mild sweet=herbal caramel. With water and time it’s more like an Irish, Bushmills pot still vibe - that putty note becoming stronger and stronger. Once past the initial hot arrival, the release flows effortlessly into the finish.
F: Mild, waxy, slightly salty white butter caramel with a little sour-herbal (tea leaves) at the finish.
C: Let down only by the arrival [that water can't rectify], this is a refreshingly herbal, mildly-sweet Arran which often sits somewhere between sherry and bourbon, that cask playing quite a role.

    Scores a C+

SMWS tasting notes:A curious combination of sweet and savoury aromas: salt caramels, balsamic vinegar -“Crème brulée meets HP Fruity Sauce” – with a suggestion of mutton pie, savoury rice with salty raisins. The taste reflects the nose: “caramelised onions with beef gravy”, green bananas, sweet vinegar. Water introduces soft toffee and cinder toffee, sandalwood and pencil shavings (“copper pennies in a wooden box”), and a suggestion of raspberry ripple ice cream, but still with a savoury base. After 14 years in a refill hogshead, we transferred this whisky directly into a sherry butt for the remainder of its maturation.

DRINKING TIP: A sauce for haggis
