top molt, very unusual profile, dry, eucalyptus. Pure harmony, endless nose
This is the best Bruichladdich I've had to date.
    • Nose
      93 93
gentle, softly caressing the nose, old sherry, dusty smoked dried fruits, black raisins, dried walnuts, fire smoke, a few spruce branches and eucalyptus
    • Taste
      91 91
eucalyptus oil, pine nuts, a drop of iodine, persimmon, fading firebrands in a fire
    • Finish
      92 92
pine needles with iodine, cough mixture, old sherry, dry ancient oak, dried lemon

Each sip is complex, different but always in the same spirit, superb.
    • Nose
Superb nose on precious wood (cedar/oak mix). Beautiful spices with a cinnamon syrup, a few cloves and nutmeg shavings. Herbaceous freshness that emerges behind the wood. Some slightly camphorated dried fruits. Macerated grapes. Amazing intensity despite the reduction. Nice balance. Beautiful stone fruits with aeration.
    • Taste
Very creamy on the palate with a nice intensity of dried fruit (date) but also stone fruit with black cherry in mind, followed by pretty peaches. A hint of plum juice is there too with a little fruity acidity. The noble wood extract is mixed with a milk chocolate juice with lots of caramel, it's delicious.
    • Finish
Warm finish on a woody caramel. A very light chocolate and vanilla haze rises before falling back into dry grass.

Very interesting profile - I like it but not quite up to the 1966 Riserva Veronelli - very good!
    • Nose
      93 93
Dried fruits, raisins, lot of vinous notes, soy sauce, meaty, BBQ, sesame oil, beef stew, little toffee, brown sugar, molasses, pepper, ginger, terriyaki, fried onions - great!
    • Taste
      92 92
Oily, little liquorice, subtle sweetness, more BBQ sauce - hickory smoke, terriyaki, soy sauce, cooked onions, sherry wood, little mushrooms and earthy notes, shitake, fernet branca digestif - very good!
    • Finish
      91 91
Medium long, warm, little toffee, coffee, earthy notes, toody

I have to say that this is the best Bruichladdich I've tasted. And although I'm not a fan of bright sherry tones, since I often have a similar allergic reaction, this one is pleasantly surprising. I would like the oak to feel a little less, but it is delicate, and does not dominate at all, but only sets off the sweetness of the old plum jam. Long-forgotten grandmothers jam.
    • Nose
      94 94
Tea brew, candied plum jam, dried bouquet of tea roses and carnations in the summer room, buckwheat honey, a little wet oak, spices. Multi-layered and oily. With the water, the sweet tones of prunes come out.
    • Taste
      91 91
first bitter, oaky, then immediately sweet, a distinct profile of sherry, plum jam and a little tart bitterness. With the water, a number of characteristic features disappeared and the drink became more watery, but sweet and a little floral.
    • Finish
      92 92
Sweet aftertaste of black tea and plum jam. Quite a long time, especially for this degree. With the water came floral notes and candy notes.

Rich and elegant sherry. Highly drinkable but to be enjoyed slowly.
    Great whisky.
    • Nose
Elegant sherry nose. Prunes, figs, raisins, wood varnish, leather, black berries, tobacco and damp earth.
    • Taste
Creamy. Prunes, raisins, black berries, nuts, toffee, coffee, dark chocolate and spices. All of this perfectly balanced.
    • Finish
      Long, creamy, fruity.

    https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/30927/bruichladdich-centenary this is a 15 year bottled in 1981  https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/14053/bruichladdich-1966  https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/16892/bruichladdich-1965    Result

    1 -  Penny Black

    2 - Reserva Veroneli

3 - 1965 Samaroli but splitting hairs with the Reserva Veroneli

    4 - Centenary

The 1968 Penny Black MI wins because it had a little more of everything and at only 46% had the most to offer on the palate.

There is really nothing between the  Reserva Veronelli 1966 and the 10 year Samaroli 1965 only that the Veronelli you could tell the extra years had added a little extra to the profile but the Samaroli 10 year is a belter for one so young.  Although the centenary was last again hardly anything in it and all 4 of these Laddie are great bottlings and this was a really enjoyable H2H

This is 46% but it is a powerful 46%, class in a glass. I love the bottle label on the MI.

If this was any more sherried I would not like it but this is a real quality old Laddie.
    • Nose
I am expecting heavy sherry here by the colour and I am immediately hit with strong furniture polish mixed with dried fruit peels.

Rich dark fruit cake, blackcurrants, raisins, black cherry, Turkish delight, massive sherry, smells much stronger than 46%

After a while some damp wood notes but there is also some blueberry
    • Taste
Huge sherry burst, massive power zesty with loads of spice thrown in. Dark rich plum, blackcurrants (Ribena) a little raspberry.

The palate settles down and it is still very rich the sherry just keeps coming in waves over the tongue
    • Finish
For 46% it is massive, long, fruity and very rich

[September, 2003]  I had this dram during a MaRa "Islay" tasting at Limburg.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 92,5.  My notes state a very delicious nose on a well balanced sherry profile.  The taste is comparable to one of my all-time favourites (Cail Ila 1966, WB id 11192) - simply "megasüffig" (ultra-quaffable).  Water is not needed, it releases unpleasant bitter notes (like so often with heavily sherried drams).
