Delicious whisky! In sum, I find the whisky as something too monotonous, but on a high level
    • Nose
      87 87
intense flowery with beautiful woody spice, vanilla kipper
    • Taste
      85 85
Strong onset, light-fruited sweet, quite sweet even, with time some soft acid notes combine, like with very ripe lemons
    • Finish
      83 83
medium-long and pleasantly spicy, initially sweet, but that decreases quickly

Perhaps not the most characterful or renowned distillery but an excellent cask pick.

If you like intensely but not over-oaked ex-bourbon malts at cask strength, this one's for you. Reminds me a bit of the Loch Lomond 17 y.o. "Organic", which sports a similar profile. This one's fruitier and less cereal-driven, though, so I like it a bit better.

Definitely add some water; it's worth it.

w/o water: dusty, cereal-driven, honeyed, with caramel / fudge, white chocolat, peppermint, assorted stone fruits and a big bourbon influence. Very harmonious and well-rounded. At times I seem to be getting a whiff of something musty and lactic, as in Jura, Bruichladdich or Edradour, but it comes and goes.
With water: opens up and becomes more floral and fruitier, with associations of white and green gummy bears (pineapple / apple flavors), grape, and ripe melon. More oak spice now as well.
    • Taste
      88 88
Nicely viscous mouthfeel and a big lift from the oak: not woody or tannic, but spicy and creamy in equal measure. Honey, tart herbs, pineapple, cloudy apple juice, barley. Very straightforward, but also very successful.
Water dials up the fruit; now there's pineapple and melon, perhaps even guava and/or lychee in the mix.
    • Finish
      87 87
Tart and sweet flavors vying for prominence. Very "chewable", keeps releasing flavors for a long while. Softly drying and honey-sweet at the same time. Café au lait, guava, quinine and straw in the aftertaste.

Good, quite appealing malt. Need air! Lose slightly out the back as the bitterness outweighs. Nevertheless delicious Speysider.
    • Nose

Oily in the nose. Slight stinging smell of paint / varnish.
      But nice grapefruit, lemon.
Floral with honey and vanilla. Needs some time in the glass under pungent smell vanishes. Then come out great floral notes. Beautiful fresh smelling summer meadow. Vanilla comes through more clearly. The honey sweetness is intensified.
      I like it.

Strong spicy start with nice sweetness. The spicy oak presses quite nicely. But lets pass the sweet pleasantly. In addition, slightly sour with citrus, grapefruit. Water opens it slightly and softens the spicy, slightly spicy oak. But it is not necessary because the alcohol is well integrated in my opinion.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium length, the spiciness and sweetness fade quickly. Change to bitterness. Prickles on the tongue very nice after.

Speyside Distillery 1996 LotG WID: 87724
Abv. 54.3%, Bourbon barrel, 20 years
Nose: flowery and floral, blossom honey, elderflowers, spiciness and wood behind, shortbread biscuits, with some hand warmth more vanilla, great floral fruity nose
Taste: malty sweet, but with enough oak for neat strength on the tongue, a nice fruitiness that is rather set and less lively and floral, but now supplemented by some citrus notes
Finish: medium long with a distinct, but not overburdened bitterness
Conclusion: Not a bad cask and not a bad malt, but also no revelation. With a little air, the malt wins significantly.

  7. Thermidor scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Best enjoyed with a good amount of water followed by some time in the glass. This is one of those whiskys that drinking neat just won't do justice to.
    • Nose
Neat: Sweet pears, grapefruit, violin bows. Salted butter, faint leather bags and a bit of varnish. With water it becomes more complex, rounder and engaging. Fresh pineapple, wafers, butter and caskwood.
    • Taste
Neat it is muted, slightly fragile, and deceptively grassy. Well balanced but with an average, slightly underwhelming body. With water the body becomes heavier. Some soapish notes come out but otherwise it is charming. Can you imagine the Bowmore fruit without the peat? That's what this is like.
    • Finish
Neat it's not much but with water the fruitiness just keeps going, and at the very end there is a vivid taste of sprouts.

Got to know this one through a Ralfy review. A surprising good Speyside! Nothing exceptional though. Needs water to really open up. Without water there's to much (unpleasant) heat in the background. With water though, what a nose!

Fruity and lot's of different kinds of tea.

Taste : Gingery spice, herbal, fruity. Finishes in some tea.
