    • Nose
Sweet, meat, and maritime notes come together wonderfully. Layers of sweet maritime smoke and cool damp sand give way to dried raisins and a meaty beef stew. The aroma reminds me strongly of beef bourguignon— rich, meaty, and drowning in red wine. There is a lot to love on the nose with characteristic Ledaig maritime salt and stone giving a lovely backbone to some of the meatier notes.
    • Taste
Mild and mellow, the dram is medium-bodied and smooth. There is a notable campfire or match-head smoke that ties it together with mineral oil, a faint soft cheese, and caramelized onions.
    • Finish
Medium to short finish with smokey fruit punch.

I recently was offered the possibility to try no less than nine Ledaig from Gordon & Macphail’s Connoisseurs Choice head-to-head, all distilled between 1990 and 2004 and bottled between 2011 and 2017. Well, that was an opportunity I could not pass up. Let’s give those a go. This is the Ledaig that was distilled in 2000 and bottled in 2015. It matured on Refill Sherry & Bourbon Casks.

Okay, this is quite different on the nose than those on either American oak or sherry casks. It’s the combination of these that offers up pleasant notes of creamy butter, fruit paste and hazelnuts. The smoke is somewhat pushed away. Blind I’d have called this Isle of Jura.

Silky soft on the palate, more sweet than anything else and hardly any smoke left. Some citrus and toffee, chestnuts and nuts. Smoke appears midpalate and then a big salty note kicks in. From the second sip on it becomes much better and at third sip it’s actually excellent! A three-stage-rocket.

The finish is rather long on light smoke and lots of greasy ashes. Delicious.

Great vatting. At cask strength this would have been a belter.

Wet grass, peat, parmigiano nose - interesting.

Palate is quite similar to regular 10.

That's a pretty straight forward whisky. The barrel is holding back but is there. In addition, there is the more specific Ledaig smoke, which has also been reduced a bit. In addition, a certain freshness.
All in all, this makes a relatively simple, but still good whisky. Somehow also drinkable. Something for on the side.

A great nose and a very light and pleasant Ledaig. The sherry likely second or third fill as it`s hard to pick up.
    • Nose
Smoke and honey, floral, rasberries, some sort of sweetener, hints of pepper
    • Taste
Soft rounded smoke, sweetness and some citrus and light pepper
    • Finish
Long and light with smoke and dry ash

Aromatic smoke, wood, coffee, hazelnuts. On the palate, I swear to taste the Jura 10 years muscular at 46%. Mineral final. A few drops of water will give more balance to this dram a bit austere - not my favorite style - but very clear, and an explosion of spices.

    Enthusiasm 3/5
