Very interesting peated whisky. One of the best from An cnoc.

Not very complex. It is just smoke. Like licking an ashtray

one of the best from an cnonc i've tried

The whisky has a clinical edge. Like classic french cooking, or really good sushi.

To take the Stack as an example; the nose is contructed like a fully formed side dish, from the cooking method to the seasoning. It's so matching, its almost twee.

Similarly, the palate is a cheesecake. It just is - there's no getting away from it.

And then there's the smoke in the tail, which is so well balanced and timed during its continued increase in intensity, I'd be shocked if the use of stopwatches, clipboards and advanced Feng Shui weren't involved in its crafting

None of it seems like an accident of providence. It tastes like it was all supposed to be like this and that the people in charge of it are quietly serious types, who can only express the elation and immense satisfaction of a job well done through an almost imperceptable nod to a passing colleague they've known for 40 years.

To be fair, for all I know this whisky could have made by anarchist hippies, but still.
    • Nose
      85 85
Barbecued, honey and butter glazed root veg, with thyme, rosemary and lemon zest
    • Taste
      87 87
Lemon curd and whipped cream, spiced and spicy, ginger-nut biscuits and a sprinkle of cocoa
    • Finish
      86 86
Gentle camphor, smoke that grows from cool ash to still burning birch. Slightly flinty

Ancnoc Stack 46%. Consumed Feb 2020. Pale yellow. Aroma is musty, softly oaky, light apple notes, lightly smoked. Taste is light spirits faint biscuit salt and smoke, touch of lemon, muted Ardbeg-like notes, soft rounded smoke, biscuit. Very good. Surely one of the very best An Cnocs I've tried - it's like an easy-going version of Ardbeg - equal to it overall but delivers the flavour punch in a different, more restrained way.

    Tasted on 07-04-2020 in Oberstaufen.

Good whisky, but a bit too ashy for me--struggles a bit to integrate well with the otherwise attractive fruity notes of An Cnoc.

    Smooth

Very nice peated range of An Cnoc for the daily dram.
    • Nose
Light smoke and vanilla. Not realy a peaty nose. Not as much medicinal notes from the AnCnoc cutter and rascan and also a little less sweetness.
    • Taste
Very nice and interesting spiciness upfront and a medium sweetness on the side. Going down very smooth and warming. Light wood tones coming up at the end together with a very light bitterness.
    • Finish
A good medium finish bringing up more sweetness and oak. A slight oily touch doesn't leave you with a dry throat.

I'm generally a fan of heavily peated whisky so it is a little surprising to me that out of the portfolio of green bottled peaty AnCnocs I find the less peaty Flaughter to be the one with the best balance and body. Stack and Cutter seem flatter and more watery compared to that one.
