[June, 2017]  I had this during a "Laddie" tasting of the FoSM at Bonn.

As the old owners of Bruichladdich (Invergordon, Jim Beam) never invested in this distillery during the eighties and nineties (and cut back production) the new owners faced a problem with the stocks from that period.  Most casks were of a poor quality with depleted woods so the whisky was not really good (matured) - a problem that is known by the Bunnahabhain and Jura management too.

So what to do?  Jim and Marc had a great idea:  They simply refilled the spirit into new, high quality casks that pushed the maturation significantly.  And as Marc is the son of a wine trader he could easily buy high quality wine casks.  That is where all these nice Laddie wine finishes come from - invented out of despair but created a new whisky style that is adored by many connoisseurs today.  And this little trick to polish up below average whisky from depleted casks by refilling it into new (aggressive) casks is a common practice now throughout the whole whisky industry...

This toast is to you - Jim, Marc and all the others at Bruichladdich that did the right things at the right time!  Slainte mhath!

  3. Hlektrion scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

A very nice, creamy, rich and complex whisky but I think that the first edition was better...
    • Nose
On the nose I’m getting some honey and some vanilla as well.
    • Taste
Smooth and sweet on the palate, and very drinkable, with banana notes.
    • Finish
The finish is satisfying sweet and salty.

  4. Calmar scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

The soft and soft, sweet-creamy mole, is very weak and simple at first, but in development it acquires depth and expansion of the palette of tastes, in general, the sensations are positive.
    • Nose
Fresh, damp, wet oak board, malt, raw grain, light floral-herbaceous notes with the departure to honey, mead, sotern motifs come to the fore.
    • Taste
Oily, syrupy sweetness, light peppery wave, cream tones, shortcake, orange and grapefruit crusts, citrus jam, condensed milk, light oak notes, candy ladybug.
    • Finish
Soft, cereal, very weak spices, pepper, sweet, light spicy oak notes, after 4-5 sips develops, becomes brighter, saturated with the dominant lemonade and fruity-honey notes.

This is a strange one. When I first tried it I was disappointed. Now, trying it again, I like it much better. Maybe it just needs some air, or patience.

    • Nose
Rich fruit notes jump out immediately. Some pineapple, mango and lime. A coastal note is in there also, oysters perhaps? The sauternes influence makes itself clear, but it’s married nicely with the spirit. With time, some wet hay and a nougat note come to the forefront.
    • Taste
A soft arrival, sweet and sour. The pineapple’s there again, some green apple and grapefruit. Then there’s a big, unexpected confectionery note, icing sugar. This tames itself after some time in the glass.
    • Finish
A nice, medium long, clean finish. The sweetness from the icing sugar lingers and is then overtaken by some salt. With time, some lemon notes pop up as well.
