  1. EvilAFI scored this whisky 92 points Expert Senior

A mouthwatering nose of delicious red fruits, oily, super fruity, mouth coating sherry that sticks to the script and does not disappoint.
    • Nose
Sweet syrupy sherry, stewed red fruits, orange, warm spices, salted caramel.
    • Taste
Sherry of perfect balance, not too sweet, no sulphur, not too dark or light of fruits, caramel, milk chocolate, mild baking spices to balance it out
    • Finish
Fruity and very long, a harmonious balance of stewed and dried red fruits that doesn’t stop

Harmony of green grapes and nuts, moderate oak, complexity, overall good, but you should buy at least three years ago

    Rich, complex, perfectly balanced.

  6. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

I like Macallan a lot, because it was one of my first whiskys (the 12 Sherry Oak), I like this one a lot, especially when I start, the last sip of my bottle is empty, too bad!
    • Nose
Since I'm not blind tasting, that's easy to say, but I think I can clearly see the Macallan character, slightly tart, almonds, somehow fresh and fruity, productive wood, slightly polished, sweet oranges, you can tell the decent 48% on the nose , there is a chocolaty undertone, more sherry in the nose after the first sip
    • Taste
Creamy, sweet, raisins, sherry, chocolate, dark, orange, intense, delicious, slightly nutty, tingles on the tip of the tongue, very tasty
    • Finish
Dryer, fruit peel, tangerines, slightly sweet, pleasant, slightly nutty

  7. JoseLuisR did not rate this whisky Member Senior

A whisky with notes of vanilla, nuts, caramel and a marked touch of chocolate as well as the characteristic smell of oak, a great whisky to share.

  8. Gil firth scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Good whisky. The best of th series.

  9. HYTTTTTT scored this whisky 86 points Member Senior

The disadvantage is that the wine body is not strong, the alcohol sense is generally controlled, and the bitterness is a bit too much.
    • Nose
      87 87
Toffee, preserved fruit, some spices, cloves, dried wood, some alcohol. overall sweet
    • Taste
      86 86
The entrance is sweet, toffee, candied fruit, and then comes out some spices, cloves, cinnamon, some bitters, dark cocoa, creamy chocolate. The wine is weak, the oil is weak, and the mouth is a little bit tight
    • Finish
      86 86
First a little dark cocoa, a little spice, and then a little preserved fruit, the slight bitterness lasts for a long time

  10. Calmar scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Rather pleasant, austere, very dry whisky with a pronounced sherry influence, whole, light, closed aroma slightly spoils the overall picture.
    • Nose
      Restrained, dry, slightly alcoholic, dark chocolate, mineral undertones, creamy tones, dusty woods;
    • Taste
Soft, calm, spicy oak, dark chocolate, coffee, light mineral notes, metallic sourness, dried fruits - prunes, raisins; burnt caramel, dried mushrooms, creamy tones.
    • Finish
Light, refreshing, spicy oak, coffee, dark chocolate, slight sourness, dried fruits.

A good combination of berries, candied fruits and nuts in a muffin.
    • Nose

Dried fruits, dry berries, dry wild berries, candied fruits, crushed nuts in the still warm, just cut pie. It also adds notes of cinnamon and dryness.
    • Taste
      85 85
Sweet, matching the profile above, with added dryness and bitterness at the end.
    • Finish

Sweet, tinged with bitterness, but fading quickly

Lots of good descriptions here, so just a brief impression of a sample
    • Nose
      88 88
At first something closed, tea leaves, rancid, musty, like an old cellar, then nutty with red fruits
    • Taste
      88 88
hardly sweet with tobacco and espresso, spicy oak, dark chocolate
    • Finish
      87 87
almost a little bitter, orange liqueur and tea leaves are added to the previous aromas

  24. Lorion scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

The nose is quite complex and offers some good things. But there are also deductions. The palate, however, is really great. And the flavors stay in your mouth for a long time, which is great again. The total is 88 points. The palate alone passes the 90s hurdle pretty well.
    • Nose
Multi-layered sherry flavors. On the one hand, I have a nutty, dry, fruity character. There are also sweet rum raisins and chocolate. Actually exactly my case. First of all, I find the alcohol somewhat bulky. It cools and tingles a little. But that will go away after a few moments. Nevertheless, it remains that I would have blindly guessed a barrel strength with a higher percentage. And not because of the intensity of the aromas. In addition to the aromas of the nose, there is a subtle sulphurous and musty note, which I like very much. To a certain extent, sulfur can cause enthusiasm for me. And here it is noticeable, but not annoying. I like that. Herbs appear, a little lovage. The sulfur increases slowly and becomes a bit too severe in places. With time and hand warmth, the nose becomes herbaceous and wood is added. The deep and dark fruity character is broken up somewhat. Too bad, I liked my nose much better at first.
    • Taste
Amazingly soft and hardly sweet. Rather dry. Wine-soaked oak. Dark chocolate quickly takes the reins in hand. Raisins, spicy tobacco. After swallowing, the tobacco becomes significantly more intense. Expresso bitterness is there in the taste. Slightly moldy leather and fermented fruit are also included. I really like the palate.
    • Finish
There is hardly any warmth, but the palate really stays present for a long time. Great!

Not a terrible dram. Decent just hyper-inflated with way too many incredibly high scores from nervous collectors/flippers hoping the whisky/macallan bubble keeps expanding. Taste things yourself and decide, don't buy into marketing and hype. No way worth what it's currently going for.

The Macallan that hits all the right tone for me.
    • Nose

Sweet malt and good amount of sherry, Milo, raisins, vanilla, oak, chocolate, orange concentrate, maybe Neslo?
    • Taste

When comparing Edition No. 1-3 directly, I choose this No.3 as my No.1. But I decided not to buy it, when it was at around 100 EUR, because for me the whisky itself was not worth that price. Well, I made the decision as a drinker and not as an investor or flipper.

  34. The Macallan scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Olorosso sherry is dominating, lots of big flavors and fruityness. Perfectly balanced between the nose and palate.

  35. Gareth74 scored this whisky 93 points Expert Senior

The worst thing about finding a whisky that you like that's limited is that the window to buy more than one bottle is small, so you have a terrible decision to make... Buy one or two bottles and move on and spend your pennies on other things without the pressure to buy or bite the bullet and pony up enough dough to stock the cupboard with as many bottles as the bank account allows.

The problem I have with Macallan Edition No. 2. It's just one of those whiskies that clicked with my taste buds and made me want a few more bottles for the cupboard and then it gave me the fear of it running out so there I go, scampering around online shops to secure a few more bottles, just in case. The fear.

There's no doubt that in the world of limited editions (what ever the product) there's a hard core group that go out and buy up all the stock they can to flip (sell at an inflated price in the second hand market) for a quick profit and Macallan is a brand that always appears on the flipper's list. It used to always be the 18 Sherry Oak, but now it seems it's been joined by the Edition range. And for good reason. (And these are the people you're up against when you want to secure those extra few bottle before they hit the secondhand market).

For the money when it was released, the Macallan Edition No. 2 was EPIC!

As a NAS there's always going to be the argument that you don't know what you're buying in terms of age, but as a drinker, not an investor, or a train spotter, the one guiding principle that makes me want to buy more than one bottle is 'Does it taste good?' The Macallan Edition No.2 does, and then some.

Other reviews on here will tell you all you need to know about the nose, flavour and finish (all 3 are wonderful) but few will touch on the emotional tug that finding a great bottle has on the drinker.

For the £75 on release or there abouts, Macallan made something rather special, a whisky that does all the usual things you want a great Macallan to do but at an affordable(ish) price. They get a lot of stick for releasing whisky that is priced over the odds but when they release something like this we can forgive them their sins.

A truly beautiful whisky that gave me pleasure and fear in equal measure.

Liked it a lot more than the Edition No.1. Similar in style but with some added sweetness and balance.
    • Nose
Oak and plenty of wood spice, cinnamon and gloves but with some sweetness the Edition No.1 didn't have. Hints of brown sugar and caramels. With time the cinnamon transcends into an Indian spice market with some floral notes.
    • Taste
Bit oak on arrival, lots of wood and plenty of spice. Oranges make a big appearance but the sweetness brings balance.
    • Finish
Zesty orange with cinnamon and chocolate. Drying

A very nice Mac, shows that not all NAS of Mac need to be bad, very intense.
    • Nose
Very fragrant, almost perfumed, bitter orange, dark malt, baked apple, dark honey, dark chocolate, leather, nutmeg, oak, licorice and wild garlic
    • Taste
Very intense and beautiful inspirations, liquid gold with bitter orange and grapefruit, as well as the baked apple from the nose, hints of black pepper and nutmeg, dark malt, wild garlic, cinnamon, a little licorice
    • Finish
Long, warm, the wild garlic is still there, some pepper and a few raisins with the bitter orange

  38. markjedi1 scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

A sweet and intense Macallan that took me by surprise, but in a very good way.
    • Nose
Gingerbread, raisins, toffee, mocha, mandarin, Ovomaltine, brown bread, autumn leafs, baked apples and mapely syrup. A hint of espresso and some Cadbury’s milkchocolate with dried fruit in the mix. Nicely sweet and quite complex. This nose has a lot on offer.
    • Taste
The mouthfeel is just fine. Round, creamy and immediately grand on spices and fruitiness. Peppers, ginger, apricot pastry, blueberries and cinnamon. Brown toast with orange marmalade. Liquorice and honey. Very pleasant.
    • Finish
The creaminess turns syrupy in the long finish full of peppers and raisins, with sugared orange peel at the death.

The Edition Series from The Macallan consists of limited edition blends of the distillery's malt whisky that have been matured in variety of different types of casks. This expression, the second release in the series, is the result of the collaboration between Master Distiller Bob Dalgarno, and the Roca Brothers - Joseph, Joan, and Jordi - owners of the El Cellar de la Roca restaurant. Together, they selected seven casks sourced from 4 different cooperages in Spain, for the whisky to mature in prior to blending. This is bottled at 48.2% ABV.

    Nose:
Sherried, glue, some hay, herb and spices like in curry. Hint of oak. It is not a bad nose, but you should expect better from Macallan.

    Taste:
Sweet, toffee, bitter-oranges, caramel, some chalkyness. Then it get's a bit sweet and sour.

    Body:
    Medium.

I'm a friend of the Edition series, but the No. 3 in a direction where I wonder if the quality can be kept ....
    • Nose
Direct sherry! Clear, deep and complex. Caramelised hazelnuts, sweet oak and pickled dried fruits. Even though it's a NAS, I'm pleased with the 48.2%, which gives it all the power that you miss on some of Macallan's younger Age Statement. A bit of sawmill, fresh sawed fir wood, resin ... with some time come nice orange notes, not the pulp, more the shell ... candied ginger is still with it ... very fine!
    • Taste
Also in the mouth a clear sweetness, combined with some bitterness, which points to the younger barrels. Due to the color, I would assume a certain amount of First Fill. The balanced and round is reflected for me in the mouth again, but he has a wonderful nutty, toffee note ... caramel is there, less the really sweet vanilla, more of a caramel which was already a bit too long on the stove.
A few drops of water make it very accessible, hardly any edges, it reminds you almost of the 12er Sherry, but with the clear difference, that the young barrels in this case are not to hide ...
    • Finish
Medium to long, warm and from a "woody sweetness" .... there is still a bit of chocolate and cherry spread at the end ... yummy!

Sweet and intensely flavourful sherry dominated whisky. I much prefer this to the 12 year old sherry wood, which tastes slightly watery by comparison, or the Sienna (I haven’t tried an 18 year old sherry wood since I have a mortgage and other interests besides whisky). Buy it while you can.
    • Nose
Lovely sherry nose with an earthy twist. Notes of toffee, vanilla, chocolate covered oranges, green apples and ginger with hints of raspberries and blackberries. Below it all an earthy note of cedar wood and nutmeg.
    • Taste
Very sweet and flavourful. Full of orange marmalade, milk chocolate, toffee, vanilla and green apples with hints of red fruits. A nice black pepper and ginger spiciness develops. Notes of liquorice towards the finish.
    • Finish
Sweet, dry and moderately long with continuing notes from the palate.

    Macallan ‘Edition No.2’ (48.2%, OB, 2016): 87 Punkte

  56. WhiskyNotes scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

    The Macallan Edition No.2
    (48,2%, OB 2016)

Nose: quite complex. It’s a drier, “forest-like” style of sherried whisky, mostly characterized by European oak. Crushed peppercorns, gingerbread and cinnamon. Then the typical baked apples, orange peel and berries. Golden syrup. Milk chocolate and a hint of coffee beans. Just a hint of green oak. A bit light and floral for Macallan, but nice.

Mouth: raisins, cinnamon and coffee. A generous peppery warmth. Not the usual prunes and dates, but a vague chocolate sweetness and a hint of blackberries. Toast. Treacle. Liquorice, vanilla and sweet ginger. Some earthy and grassy notes as well.

Finish: medium length, still on ginger and cinnamon, with a hint of lemon peel.Being spicy and earthy yet fairly light, this is slightly atypical for The Macallan (although they are betting on European oak a lot lately). But the result is really good and not overpriced, better value than most of their core range these days.

Macallan Edition No 2 Tasting Notes

    Color: Dark Golden

Nose: Fruit and Forest aromas. Sweetness of vanilla and toffee. Some spiciness in the form of ginger but not much. Macallan veterans will find the nosing different and light.

Palate: The spices initially welcomes you thanks to the higher than usual ABV but it does not last that long. The sweet ginger and fruity flavors take over. Vanilla and earthy notes, oak and nuts delicately balances the sweetness.

Finish: Medium to long finish. Silky smooth texture, leaving ginger and vanilla lingering in your mouth…

Macallan Edition No 2 offers a different flavor profile and character than his older brother, Edition No 1. It is also a sweeter expression. It is a great product overall and I highly recommend it. Especially to whisky enthusiasts with a sweet tooth…

Macallan Edition No.2 is all about balance and it’s pretty damn delicious at the same time. I’ve seen much written about the overbearing marketing around this bottling, and indeed the contradiction of shouting about age statements being important (with the release of Double Cask 12 year old) and then following it up with a fairly expensive bottling which doesn’t have one. However, put all that aside and just focus on the liquid itself and you’ll find this to be one of 2016’s best releases. Lovely stuff.

interesting - stronger in the mouth than in the nose, long in the mouth it is more woody chocolate, because red fruit - delicious but priced at least 30% too high
    • Nose
different red berries with a slightly bitter impact, heavy red wine, grape almonds, honey, very smooth voluminous sweet and sour course reminiscent of valent balsamic vinegar with some chocolate and mint
    • Taste
beautiful dark fruit sweet and sour, oily, dark chocolate, walnuts, marzipan, slightly bitter oak tingles nicely on the tongue, with some cinnamon a lot of tobacco and old leather, very smooth texture - beautiful round, complex, exciting on the palate, darker and dark chocolate Almonds (marzipan with dark chocolate)
    • Finish
very chocolaty with tingling layered oak, white pepper, ginger, warming, slightly dry, herbal tart

A very oily, tasty, tasty droplet. Thank you Callaman for the opportunity to try him.
    • Nose
Spicy sherry. Leather, licorice. Marzipan. Slightly sour, dark berries. Something like blueberry and blackberry. Sweetish forest honey. With some time in the glass, the sourish fruit note becomes stronger. Ne Zwetschge is spreading. A cocooned note creates itself from the background to the front. Something like slightly scorched cigar leaves. A bit of bittersweet chocolate and, as with the predecessor, a little salt.
    • Taste
Gentle, oily onset. The sweet honey flows and brings neat marzipan and chocolate. Reminds me somehow of this Zentis thing that exists at Easter. Some oak spice and these sour, dark berries come after. This light, cocooned note of wet tobacco is also found in the taste. But really only very discreet. The colleague remains oily, from front to back.
    • Finish
Short to medium. Very oily with a lot of marzipan and dark chocolate. A little espresso.

    • Taste
pungent spicy on the palate with wood smoke and bonfire followed by dried fruits and roasted nuts, well balanced
    • Finish
drying yet smooth and delicate finish of bonfire, peanuts and dried fruits, ending with a hint of the sweet custard and banana pie as well

N- Initial wet box, follow by lifted sweet sherry, raisin and toffee with good doses of resinous oily texture to the nose. Mint, good strength with penetrating fresh citrus, may not be old but superbly well compose.

P- Medium body. Treacle sourish sweet evolved to pickled ginger, vanilla and dried fruits, figs, as well oily orange peels. Quality chocolate, good strength and balance.

F- Medium-long, smooth with American oak shines thru the palate. Plum, orange liqueurs and frizzy toffee. Smell, taste and ended deliciously. — at The Whisky Bar, Kuala Lumpur.

Color: rich gold with a light reddish tint
Nose: Juicy sweet tangerines and oranges mingle with sour cherry. A more bitter note of oak makes me think of toasted walnuts. After some time, some milk chocolate joins the roasted flavors, as well as a pleasant spice, which is reminiscent of Liebstöckl. The alcohol is something to remember in the nose, but not really uncomfortable. After a few minutes, the nut component and the toasted notes become even more apparent. Nevertheless, the sweetness always remains in the foreground. Although sweeter than ordinary OB Macallan, the typical Macallan character is still findable. The aroma is very pleasant and hits my nerve in any case. There is something of everything. Taste: Pleasantly peppery, sweetness in the form of beautiful juicy, sweet tangerines, raisins and a certain acid component always flash in the mouth. Nuts and milk chocolate and a wonderfully bittersweet note with a hint of vanilla ring the finish. Warming, he goes down the esophagus, but without going in a bitter direction. The finish is characterized by a light orange with some dark chocolate and nuts. However, the finish is not very long, rather medium long.
Conclusion: It is relatively round and a strengths are clearly in the initial taste and in the first part of the departure. But the drop does not seem to be really old, because really "old" notes and more prominent oak tones are not to be found superficially in the finish. Still quite successful and a slightly different Macallan. A little more harsher oak flavors would have stood him well. I still like it pretty much. Especially when it should not be a total sherry bomb, a good choice. The price of 99 € is lifted, for the recently called 79 € but quite reasonable.

If you add water the nose is more restrained, but the palate becomes too thin, only a few drops of water are needed, taste wise noticeably sweeter.

A solid malt in my book and tastes like an older Macallan but I find it a little boring and run of the mill to be honest.

    Still worth 85p
    • Nose
The first thing that hits you is the sherry (had a lid on the glass for a few minutes mind), stewed prune, fig, blackcurrant jam
    • Taste
Very fizzy and not as sherried as the nose suggested with some bitterness on the tongue after a few seconds. The caramel notes are quite strong and so is the notes of dark jams. Later some   lighter fruit but I cannot identify it possibly peach.
    • Finish
A little shorter than medium but nothing to grumble about

Treacle, ginger, toffee apples and rich fruits. Layers of vanilla open into tropical fruits and subtle green wood.
    • Taste
Warm with spice as cracked black pepper and cloves join with hints of chocolate, brown sugar, oak and nuts. Finally, liquorice and brandy snaps come through.
    • Finish
Full, slow, warm and wonderfully viscous.

A creative collaboration between Bob Dalgarno, our master whisky maker and the three Roca brothers, co-founders of El Cellar de Can Roca, twice named best restaurant in the world, Edition No.2 unites these four masters in one spirit.

The distinctive and dynamic character of Edition No.2 has been shaped not only by the use of seven exceptional oak cask types from four different bodegas but by the creative spirit of each of the four collaborators; combining flavours to reflect each of their distinctive personalities in the resulting whisky.Drawn from European and American oak casks, this limited edition is a characterful single malt that showcases our extraordinary commitment to sourcing and selecting only the very best oak casks for The Macallan.Note by Macallan

For the event Josep Roca commented;“The Macallan has personality and character in its whisky, but there is a nice balance. The different oaks and barrels can be spicy, fruity or floral with varying intensities but always balance – which made each dish open to possibility,”“Both worlds speak the same language. The main link comes from the aroma and flavors.  Making whisky is an art itself; taste, smell, textures are all seen in The Macallan.”For the creation of this expression each contributor has handpicked a cask;*Joan Roca, head chef, picked 1st and 2nd fill Diego Martin casks for its rich green wood and toffee flavors.*Jordi Roca, pastry chef went with 1st and 2nd fill Vasyma American Oak casks to include light vanilla and citrus notes.*Joseph Roca, the sommelier, selected 1st fill Jose Miguel Martin casks with spicy ginger notes.
*Bob Dalgarno picked 1st fill Tevasa cask, which conveys dried fruit and sherry notes.
Master Distiller Bob Delgarno stated that;“The collaboration embodies the spirit of The Macallan. Edition No.2 reflects the personalities of the Roca brothers and me, represented by our personal cask selection.”The result was a unique master piece with warm and spicy, complex character. It is a whisky created by the uncompromising creative spirit of the four collaborators who came together to curate this special single malt.
