*: Looking through the tasting notes (https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/fettercairn/fettercairn-8-year-old-2012-cask-146663-provenance-douglas-laing-whisky) on this bottle, either my palate was way off, or this sample comes from a different batch than the one labeled.

My notes more closely resembles an earlier batch (https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/fettercairn/fettercairn-8-year-old-2008-cask-11192-provenance-douglas-laing-whisky/).

Because I was doubting my palate, I split this dram over two nights to try and make doubly sure I wasn't having an off day.

This is among the most basic whiskies I've ever had, that has still been good.

    Open the bottle: Chocolate

Take a Sip: Chocolate + warmth

    Swallow: Residual Chocolate + spice

Really not much to this Fettercairn, but what is there, is pleasent enough.

There's an orange strand that runs through most of it and a bit of cinamon, cardamom and szechuan that warm and sustain the tail, but on first tasting, that was it.

On second tasting, 24 hous later, the chocolate tones had changed to mild, sweetend coffee and the orange had disipated almost completely, making it even more simplistic.

The mouthfeel, which was medium - thick, gave it just enough of a boost to push it from OK to enjoyable.

If I wanted to drink something I didn't want to think about at all, this wouldn't be a bad shout, though in a line-up, I don't think it would fare so well.

However, credit where credit is due: this is a very balanced dram.
    • Nose
Chocolate-Raisin, orange marmalade, faint toasted seeds
    • Taste
Chocolate-Orange/Instant coffee, Oak and cinnamon, rising to Szechuan
    • Finish
      Milk-Chocolate, cardamom, continued Szechuan
