Whisky Reviews for Caol Ila 1992 SMWS 53.235

4 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 88.12 points

  1. Mannix65 scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

A complex chameleon, - to enjoy with and without water parallel, amazing difference - a great drop that is fun for a long time
    • Nose
Smoky and fleshy, Leukoplast plasters, some iodine ointment, grape juice, old balsamic vinegar, Chinese Sa-Cha duck in dark soy or Hoisinsauce

With water, the smoke fades into the background, instead, it becomes salty and maritime, his old age becomes clearer
    • Taste
Present camp smoke, rhubarb, but also quite a phenolic component is noticeable, subtle sweetness and fleshiness - as a companion to Asian duck conceivable, spreads voluminous in the mouth, ripe gooseberries and licorice

with water it becomes rounder and denser, looks even more mature
    • Finish
very long and smoky, spicy - keeps extremely long in the mouth and throat - top

  3. FernetBranco scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

The nose can be quite hope: Distinct smoke, bacon, light "soup soup" (celery, pepper, lovage). On the tongue then enormously versatile. Very spicy, very smoky - and "sweet-sweet". In the second run then a little sulfur ... tar and lukewarm asphalt. The body is light yet powerful. Like an ascetic marathon runner ... and so the finish: already dressed shortly after the start and pulled through to the finish. Terrific! Spectacular Caol Ila with the makings of a classic!

And then ... if you think, now it's all over: Ritter Sport "Asphalt-Nut-Chocolate" :-)

    SMWS Tasting Notes

    Colour: Autumn sunset

    Flavour profile: Peated

    Smoky, fruity and meaty aromas were interestingly entwined;
balsamic roasted strawberries with dark chocolate, tea smoked duck with lime
hoisin and smoked orange marmalade. The taste was like honey soy ginger roast
pork belly with molasses roasted onions. As soon as you added water the smoke
almost disappeared replaced by a waxy, oily and salty scent like eating fish
and chips wrapped in greaseproof paper on a pebble beach and in the finish,
creamy vanilla porridge with brown sugar apples. After 23 years in an
ex-bourbon refill barrel, we transferred this whisky directly into a white wine
cask for the remainder of its maturation.

Drinking tip: Changes completely when adding water
