Whisky Reviews for Clynelish 1989 MMcK

6 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.83 points

  1. el Gato scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Such a fine Clynelish. A bit all over in a way. Not the waxyness in the nose but in the body. Dissappears in the finish again. A bit chemical all the way. Don't mind it though.
    • Nose
Minerals & Strawberries hit me first. Then sweet liquerice. Perhaps a hint of salt. Mint and grass. A bit chemical. Peach. A bit of citrus and green tea. Almonds. Apples. Just a bit honey with time
    • Taste
Oily and lovely. More waxy now. Chemical. Pine. Peppery. Apples. Red berries. Hint of salt again.
    • Finish
Medium length at first. Quite long on the next few sips. A bit malty. Some citrus lingers. Peppery and a bit chemical again.

Atypical Clynelish initially, then starts to develop on the palate more to what Clynelish can be. Finish lingers enough to make this enjoyable and IMHO, one to seek out
    • Nose
      91 91
Mineral notes, then pine, followed by soft red berries, and slightly salty water, chamomile tea, then honey
    • Taste
      90 90
Honey, then the typical Clynelish wax, lemon zest, green apple, ginger ale
    • Finish
      91 91
Honey, pepper, citrus zest, candied ginger

While we got off to a slow(ish) start, it picked up quickly and ended on a high note. Displays some of Clynelish trademark characteristics, which is always a good thing.
    • Nose
A bit shy. We're starting with pine needles and pine wood, and a slight perfume-y edge. White grapes, soft lemon and buttered toast, as well as a hint of marzipan.
    • Taste
Now we're getting somewhere. Lemon zest, ripe apples, plenty of candle wax too. And a pinch of salt with a tiny whiff of tobacco. Pretty classic Clynelish if you ask me.
    • Finish
Waxy notes accompanied by ginger and apple.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Some classic Clynelish coastal air notes, with a touch of iodine in
there too. Continues on to granary toast slathered with honey and
    crystallised ginger.
Palate: Burnt sugar, fresh orchard fruits (lots of apples and waxy orange peels to this one), a pinch of tobacco.
Finish: Ginger returns on the finish, though now spicier than before.
