0485-WOODFORD RESERVE KENTUCKY STRAIGHT RYE WHISKEY 45.2%
...the nose promised to be at least good, but the palate was so-so. That's not to say it's bad. If I had to choose between the basic version and this one, I'd prefer the basic Woodford. It's more polished. And if I liked the other one better, why pay more?! It's sippable, of course, but for me—nothing too exciting.
    • Nose
...sweet, creamy, caramel, glucose syrup, toast with butter and honey. That's what I like in bourbons. At a stronger draw, it seems there's more alcohol than listed on the label. In the empty glass, there's barely a trace of glue or acetone. It's there, but it seems to be absent. A bit of a muddy autumnal atmosphere. Overall, it doesn't affect my perception of this version. ...at least not yet. Over time, something like a weak solvent emerges. Cooked grain, a pinch of cinnamon, cloves. It's not bad, I'll sniff it for a minute longer – plump raisins, along with a cherry flavor, play on the nose. A touch, maybe a drop – of Amol, white pepper. You can't smell the alcohol, but that doesn't mean it's gone, because I was still a bit fuzzy inside.
    • Taste
...here it's not as pleasant as on the nose. It creates a sense of watering down, yet dryness. The sweetness is in retreat. Instead, there's more tannin, bitterness, and toasted oak. The second sip intensifies the first, now with more bitterness, something I'd compare to hops. The fruit is a bit heavy, red, condensed, and acidic, doused in alcohol. There's also that hint of amol, slightly cooling yet warming, herbal. I'm not sure I want to pour a third sip...
    • Finish
...quite spicy, a bit too sharp (it might be the sharpness of the rye), with a sweetish honey aftertaste and a bitter oaky aftertaste. A bit harsh on the throat.
