Oban Distillery Only Bottling 2016, NAS. 48% ABV

Comments: As I haven't seen any previous reviews for this beauty, I thought I would share my two cents. I picked this bottle up at the Oban distillery this summer after tasting their lineup and feeling like it stood head and shoulders above the core line. They first matured their spirit in the same ex-bourbon casks used for the 14yo. They then finished the spirit in “specially charred” casks to enhance “woody flavors” before marrying in “another type of cask”. It is approximately 16-18 years old. While this may all sound a bit vague, it’s about all the information I could get out of the staff! Release limited to 6000 bottles; you may feel a bit of sticker shock at £100.

    Color: Honey yellow.

Nose: Spiced apple cider. Burnt orange. Sweet vanilla. Very distant smoke.

Palate: Pepperiness with a bit of salt. Creamy, rich. Green apple, spices, some dark chocolate. Floral and vanilla. More green apple.

Finish: Moderate to long. Lingering apples and oranges. Warming. A hint of sweetness and smoke is all that remains a minute or two later.

General Impression: Very good and complex. While it certainly has the unmistakable Oban character, this is a different beast to the 14yo. It is perfectly bottled at 48%. If you make the trek out to Oban, I highly recommend asking for a taste and considering this bottle; it's a unique and delicious Oban offering.

    Score: A- (90-92 points)

    Price paid: £100 (~$147 USD)

Adjusted for price and intangibles: B+ (87-89 points)

[May, 2017]   This is the so-called D.O.B. (Distillery Only Bottling), again a NAS edition (Dear Diageo, could you please tell us customers what you mix into these nondescript releases?  Or don't you value your customers at all and you deliberately keep us in naive stupidity...  Come on, a website like Bruichladdich does it cannot be that difficult to install!).

The nose is quite nice on fruity (the Oban trademark oranges and some pears) and grassy (heather, summer flowers) aromas pepped up by light but delicious OBFs (old bottle flavours, I did not expect that in a NAS edition.  So it seems Diageo added some older casks to the batch.  Hey, another good reason to publish some info about the content!).  It arrives on the palate smooth and mellow, really nice.  Even some kind of (at least tongue-) coating takes place.  Not too bad...

The taste is smooth and mellow as well, again on this fruity/grassy profile like the nose.  Additional nice barley sugary (not honey), dark chocolate and spicy (peppery) flavours develop over time, all very balanced and in harmony.  The finish is of medium length and comes in different lovely waves, very enjoyable.    All in all an excellent dram both to sniff and to sip, but quite expensive for a NAS bottling...

PS:  Give me some info about the content of your releases, Diageo and I most probably will rate the price dimension better - but NAS to me reads simply:  Never Accept Stupid marketing!

Aroma: Classically malt, sharper, spicy spicy to peppery. Bourbon breeze. Cinnamon, an older oak woodliness, a drop of honey, a little perfume scent. (84 b)
Taste: It clears on the tongue, it is stronger than 48%. Cinnamon, very peppery, spicy. (86 b)
    Points: 85
Summary: A distinctive, very spicy and whisky whisky, I like it.

    Enthusiasm: Nose and mouth: 3/5 final: 2/5 Whisky n ° 1751
    • Nose
Crunchy malt, fresh fruits that, initially shy, take the insurance and form a balance with other flavors. Rather elegant and delicate, but not very bulky. With a few drops of water, it is more caressing and reveals a little menthol.
    • Taste
In the mouth, relatively powerful. Very spicy, discreet fruity. With water, spices are less dominant which benefits the overall balance.
    • Finish
Final monolithic and a little stiff, betraying the youth of the beverage. With water, it acquires more length.

Correct Oban, though a little expensive.
    • Nose
Waxy apple, pear, orange peel, vanilla and spicy oak.
    • Taste
Floral. Vanilla, green apple and cocoa. Pepper and salt.
    • Finish
      Long, spicy, sweet.

tasted at the distillery, so no proper notes. had it around 88/100 but found it a little too expensive for a NAS.
