Tasted blind from a sample. There’s zero chance I ever would have guessed this. I was dead-set on this being an ex-bourbon Islay from the first whiff, which might have biased me against noticing any port influence, though wine was vaguely hinted at from a mildly tannic finish. Being a tawny port I’ll not feel too bad for noting absolutely zero fruitiness of any kind, I see this as being fairly dry.
    • Nose
Mellow damp peat smoke, wet wood, creamy (va)nilla wafers. A bit of a medicinal, iodine and chlorine backdrop. Definite coastal salinity here too. Briny.
    • Taste
Charcoal smoke rolls in, but relaxed. Dry and balanced wood influence, nice and oily texture. Oh yeah, this is a bit of a salty one (love the salt). Bandages, too. Super quick hit of barely-sweetened mocha. It’s spicy but not sadistic, no water needed.
    • Finish
Return of the iodine sensation. Really pleasantly dry and bitter on the finish, faintly tannic. Leaves off with relaxed, toasty smoke that keeps you busy for a while.
