    Sample.

I trust Springbank more with a wine cask than I do with a sherry cask, to be honest. It’s either poor cask management, or they are cheap, because many of their sherry casks are sulphured. Probably the latter. And I love Springbank, but it cannot be ignored. Anyways, springbank and wine go well together! Something about the raw mineral spirit and earthy herbal red wine is a good combo. Case in point here. Great little bottling!
    • Nose
      87 87
Starts on chewable vitamins, dry leaves and twigs in the fall, calcium, chalk. A little acidity. Red berries - almost like a róse wine.
    • Taste
      89 89
Milk chocolate, leafy and herbal. Good mouthfeel. Red berries turn darker. Gets deeper and richer. Still some calcium, but nice and rich on the palate.
    • Finish
      87 87
Vitamins and calcium back into focus, drying, dark berries turn back to red berries. Chalky. Earthy smoke builds.

Of the shortcomings, only the first nose, in which there was decent varnish. Further, this is a very good dram.
    • Nose
      87 87
Varnish with a slight sourness from red berries (red currant or raspberry). The varnish quickly passes and medicinal herbs appear, which give excellent cold and freshness. In the background is orange peel.
    • Taste
      89 89
In the mouth, oranges come out on top in their variety - ripe red, dried candied candied fruits. Even a slight bitterness from the orange peel, not from the oak. Barely noticeable peat and a small mint petal. Perhaps there is an imbalance between the nose and taste, in this case it does not bother me.
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium sweet and sour on oranges and berries.

the malt is not for me
I missed the barrel influence on the palate
    • Nose
this typical Weinmuff, slightly dirty, oak different, red Haribobär
with water: honey, minimally a meaty note

from 1920s: red fruit/grape, like, mini cheesy, slightly red gum, minimal oil, tingly, a meaty note (so gravy), a note I can't name
with water: minimal tobacco, slightly gum
    • Taste
      full, strong, oily
nutty, raisin, spicy, chocolate ~ 75%, some smoke, bitter, the alcohol tingles a little, minimal workshop

with water: softer, bast, bitter, cardboard, musty
    • Finish
      medium long
bitter, slightly tart, furry on the tongue, a note that I can't name

with water: very tart, blackberry, some peanuts, oak a little rotten, cooked rice

I really like the whisky. I am very stunned. 90 points!
    • Nose
"That's a great nose! Very vinous, almost reminds me of Couvreur. Dried fruit, but rather a bit lighter. Apricots, peaches. In addition, an aromatic oak with various herbs. A hint of lovage. There are also nuts. Walnuts.

Water: The whisky hardly changes on the nose, maybe it gets a little drier."
    • Taste
"Blindly, I would have guessed a sherry cask, maybe Manzanilla. Winey, nutty and heavy, the whisky settles in the mouth. Full and strong, but without burning. Nutty wood, intense apricot, slightly darker chocolate. A hint of whistling -Tobacco. Wonderful!

Water: Now I hear a hint of a delicate smoke in the aftertaste. Fascinating. "
    • Finish
Long, warm, sweet, dry. All at the same time. Wonderful!

The wine barrel is very present on the nose, woody acidity and only at the very end the distillery character.

The springbank character is much more present on the palate and the wine barrel is no longer so dominant. Starts sweet and then turns salty.

I like it very much. Acts older than 12 years.

  13. LDB scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

The malt really has rough edges, the gums are astringent from the sour aromas of the wine barrel, at the same time there is a viscous spice that gives a good sense of the distillery character. Very special and definitely not everybody's darling, but really well done.
    • Nose
A flood of rubber jumps on me (?!), Then red wine vinegar - pretty blatant, after a while and 2 drops of water the whole thing smooths out and the red wine fruit comes to the fore. Sweat and brass are included in the aroma, but the acidity gradually decreases.
Now balsamic vinegar and soy sauce develop with a dash of the darkest fir honey. A touch of Pattex (I used to like to smell it!) Remains: This nose is a challenge!
    • Taste
An explosion of fruitiness and salty spiciness, very intense, it tingles under the tongue and the alcohol carries the sour aromas wonderfully elegantly over the palate. So anything but ´fury´ or something, but that seems to have been a great Burgundy.
The journey across the palate is sensationally exciting, smooth and rich in contrast.
    • Finish
Long and salivary, at the end there is sour cherry in Grafschafter gold juice (turnip greens), lasting forever, the stimulation of saliva and then the sweet and sour fruit come back on the tongue in waves.

  14. BluePeat scored this whisky 88 points Expert Junior

Bought in 2017 for around $150 USD. Sour cherries on the nose, and definitely dry on the palate, as many others mentioned, with a medium finish. I actually believe it opens up nicely. Sweet, red fruits but not overpowering with the wine influence. Better without water. Overall, happy with the bottle at a slightly higher than original price, but I prefer the 15 rum cask, based on my memory of that one.

Big, fruity, tannic, and funky, with just the right amount of astringent oak. Fresh dark fruits and dried tropical fruits
    • Finish

long and dry. Dark fruits. A little smoky. Red wine. Melted dark chocolate, sweeter and less bitter than on the palate.

      Intensity: Medium +
Quite Special and unusual springbank. Flora and aromatic; sweet with some acidity. I can't get any info online whether it is mature in white or red wine in Burgundy. But I think it is from pinot noir cask as I do get some red fruit note like cranberry. Some apricot and minerality, nuttiness and also some pine oak.
    • Taste
      85 85

Dry and tannin mouthfeel. Some caramel like sweetness. The bitterness at the end of palate is quite strong that give it a unbalance finish.

Incredibly, I’ve also tried this one before, back when Whisky Lounge last came to Brighton – so the revisit & revision session continues, along with the red wine/grape theme.

C: Aah, Springbank – always desirably homemade. Being open for some years now, it feels like this bottle has lost a little vitality, yet the initial strength of 53.3% has no doubt helped preserve this one as well as it can. Regardless, a point more than in 2016. They really know what they are doing up in Campbeltown, regardless of whether it’s double or triple distilled, peated or unpeated, or matured/finished in refill ex-bourbon or burgundy casks. Easily the best whisky of the night.

Very interesting whisky. With a beautiful interplay of aromas. I liked that very much.
    • Nose
      Colour:
      copper

      Nose:
Starts off slightly smoky, cool and leathery. The leather looks greased. Seared orange slices and anise. It seems rather light-fruity to me right now. Direction of overripe apricots. In addition a little solvent. I'll leave my colleague standing ...
With a little time in the glass, the guy looks greasy. A sweet, fermented berry note joins it. It doesn't seem so cool either. Significantly more set and denser. Now I also find dark cherries from the glass. A pleasant spice nicely plays around what is happening in the glass. Some hazelnut flashes in the meantime.
    • Taste
First soft start. Kind of dry - creamy. Then the berries clearly in the taste. This fine mineral smoke also asserts itself right away. Becomes earthier. Charred marzipan and a herbal note that reminds me of sage. The wort comes through better with the second sip. Something like cloves and white pepper. A pleasantly sour fruit taste spreads. In addition, honey and a fresh note of wood.
    • Finish
Medium to long. First dry, finely smoky and minerally spicy. But then again tart and at the same time creamy and sweet. Almost everything there. : D

    • Taste
There is something scratchy about it, is that smoke? Then the sweetness is full-bodied, more vanilla, less herbs, a bit of oak, sourly fruity
    • Finish
      Sweetish finish, unfortunately somewhat short

    • Nose
      90 90
Quite salty and coastal ,at first, which is a bit unusual.
The wine profile adds nice layers of dried autumn leaves , burnt herbs and nuts.
Strong notes of molasses sugar and strawbberies plus subtle cold smoke contribute to a quite complex for the age nose profile.
    • Taste
      87 87
Quite smoky, maybe this happens due to the tannic and dry ,though no sulfurous, wine profile. The sweetness manages to balance with the leafy and tannic side
    • Finish
      84 84
Ashes, molasses, balsamic vinegar and herbs.
However the tannic side from the wine is now noticeably loud.

Here a basket of freshly sliced oranges blows towards you, yes very citrusy, behind it creamy, nuts, some biscuit dough, some tobacco, subtly a grated mint leaf, whole milk chocolate, slightly greasy, but overall very light and fresh, pleasing, after the first sip dominates the creamy chocolate with a few bits of bacon (I actually had it as a combination, not bad)

Nose: first really earthy. This has to go a little bit until the fruit comes to the fore, then it will be pretty strawberry-like, so it will be properly berry. After a few smells this strawberry beats towards PEZ candy, you know the things with the tilting head or? At the end, a fine mint note is added, but that could also be the alcohol.

Mouth: sweet with a tough start. So there the alcohol is already strong, but clearly a jumper, this earthy, dirty I know of the Hazelburn, which I still have open at the time. The fruit is full again, or straw is the straw, I do not know. By the way, the strong alcohol disappears quite fast on the tongue. What I like but really good is the fine oak note that lasts a long time. Not at all bitter but nice long it remains in the aftertaste. Incidentally, the second sip is much more harmonious and pleasant than the first.

Conclusion: after the first sip it would not have been the 88 points in my rating, but it is developing well, really delicious towards the end! Especially the fruity note develops nicely. Think the base points hit him pretty well.

A very unusual and complex Springbank, which despite all its otherness still has the typical Springbank characteristics. The freshness of the barrels you notice this bottling, the wine is dominant and blends in with the sour notes quite wonderful in the harsh Springbank complexity. Just beautiful!
    • Nose
The light smoke and the acidity of the wine directly provide a very exceptional entry into this Springbank - he smells a bit of burnt fruit compote with rhubarb and berries. Juicy orange and lime peels, vanilla and over and over fruit acid, which waters my mouth even when smelling. After a little warmth of the hand, it becomes noticeably sweeter and the typical oily and salty spice of Springbank comes through, albeit much more subdued than usual.
Alcohol is not distracting at any time. For a pretty young 12 year old with cask strength already amazing.
    • Taste
The whole mouth is immediately flooded with a breathtaking sugary sweetness! The typical Springbank sharpness comes later, then the spice and again the sour fruit notes of the wine. Distinct wood notes of the barrel complete the whole thing with a bitter dryness.
    • Finish
In the long finish somewhat grassy and light tannins of the wine, barely fruity. Some oak is also added. A sweet-and-sour plume of smoke lingers the longest

If this is the yardstick, burgundy casks work as well as bourbon or sherry. A nice, wholly normal one.
    • Nose
At first it has this quite stingy aroma about as if lightly roasted coffee and turpentine. When I got the water right it is amazingly close to the basic contemporary line of SB: a bit less chlorine and almond, a bit more marzipan and pistachios, a bit less toffee and instead some really faint raspberry or strawberry. Some ammonium chloride, quite sweet and very soft. Very lightly smoky. All in all a quite flawless basic contemporary SB, I really couldn't guess the cask.
    • Taste
Just basic SB here, a delicioushoneyd malt, marzipan, light smoke, a little less aspirin-bitterness than many other SB's nowadays, which is good. It is even harder to recognise the cask then in the nose.
    • Finish
      Nice, semi-long mildly smoky marzipan.

So far, I can not cope with any of the more experimental Springer barrels, and here too the case is no different, always too biting, metallic, everything, you notice the potential of the spirits behind it, too bad.
    • Nose
Vinegar, metal, small change, citrus acid, light raisins, light honey, vanilla, menthol, toffee, hazelnuts, hints of salt, alcohol, some cherries and some pepper
    • Taste
Again, this vinegar, sour grapes, sweet licorice, pickled raspberries, snappy alcohol, tea notes, something earthy and metal

There’s a lot to like about Springbank 12 year old Burgundy, especially the nose, which is quite the lovely thing. The combination of wine with the underlying Springbank mineral, earthy/peaty style works exceptionally well in this instance - and it still feels like a very old school style whisky. Flavours are pronounced, varied and interestingly composed, and the oak doesn’t make an appearance until the finish, where its drying influence is welcome and altogether rather pleasant. Perhaps a bit overly saccharine in places, but I’m starting to nit-pick now - this is very solid whisky indeed.

    https://www.thedramble.com/tastings/springbank/springbank-12-year-old-burgundy/
    • Nose
A pronounced combination of steely minerals, earthy dunnage warehouses and bright, juicy red berries – quite wonderful. Smoke is a supporting aroma here, but it touches all aspects of the whisky – intermingling with charred raspberries, singed strawberries and caramelised cherries – whilst also delivering a slightly coastal brininess. Sharp black pepper is perceptible and adds another layer of interest. A few drops of water ups the sweetness levels a notch with both stewed plums and golden honey.
    • Taste
An arrival that is part oily and part zingy – the red wine influence can be detected immediately. Red berries, grapes (no surprise there) and chilli peppers are joined by sherbet and citric minerality. In the mid palate, chocolate intermingles with wet soils, mosses and earthy peat – surprisingly sweet in places. There’s still a fair dunnage influence here, mustiness, damp….a bit on the dirty side. The addition of water ups the sweetness again, coating the berry fruit in a dusting of icing sugar, as well as emphasising some of the Campbeltown peat – pungent with a slight rubbery edge.
    • Finish
Medium in length, quite drying, quite tannic and with plenty of oak – but still rather sweet.

really great jumper, the wine harmonizes wonderfully with the Brennereicharakter. Highly recommended
    • Nose
clear, slightly musty smoke (surprisingly dominant, almost a longrow), cooling peppermint (alcohol squeezes), sweet and salty note (soy sauce), strawberries with green pepper (every time), fermented red grapes and wood (wine notes), gingerbread Spices (cardamom, nutmeg, clove, anise)
    • Taste
immediately creamy sweet licorice, dark fruit (almost like port wine), strawberries and raspberries, dry smoke, spiced tea (getting drier), extremely round (no water needed), warming
    • Finish
soft smoke, streaked with a fine salt note and oak

Exemplary Springbank as usual, but in a rather excellent and not often seen cask. One of my favourite distilleries and with great reason. Old school style whisky in a modern setting.
    • Nose
The nose is something else. When they used to blend whisky aged in wine casks, and George was King. Loads of peaty red fruits, burnt strawberry and camphor wipes. Ship ropes and damp earth.
    • Taste
Palate is rich and fruity, still malty and a big minty hit. Old diesel engines, more farmy notes and some crushed leaves.
    • Finish
The finish is huge peat and more lovely red fruits. Big cask spice like cardamom and cassia. The leaves are here but smouldering now, a subtle hint of struck match in the end.

A great spring bank. I'm torn. A malt with a lot of volume. Definitely one of the best 12 year olds that I had in the glass so far.
    • Nose
First, the alcohol stings in the nose. So a drop of pure water. The first sensations are doughy, musty. After a few minutes .... very clear, the typical Springbank character. Dirty, campfire, cold smoke. I love this combination !!! Slowly, the red wine note comes through. Oak, fine roasted aromas. Again a few minutes later ..... polish, wax. In the background red fruits.
    • Taste
Creamy, oily. Sweet cookie dough. Red fermented berries. Raspberry, blackberry, cranberry, canned strawberries. Everything is pretty dirty and smoky.
    • Finish
Medium to long. Drying. The oak makes itself felt.

Now: candy box open, licorice out!
    • Nose
Salty strawberries come to my mind first, very red wine, also raspberries are here, a little cold smoke, then comes an insanely concise liquorice note, salt liquorice at its best, including comes through again and again the metal bucket, which I have often had at Springbank
    • Taste
Sweet strawberries and a lot of red wine directly back to the beginning, then comes a strong start together with now more noticeable smoke, the oak spice dries out the mouth slightly, but everything fits wonderfully to the recurring licorice
    • Finish
Mouth-filling and warming with oak, red wine and a again soft smokiness, the mouth finally feels as if it had eaten a packet of licorice - great

Limited to 10260 bottles, this version contrasts slightly with the 'classic' range. I must admit that I am not a fan of the Burgundy versions, or even Burgundy finish and this Springbank confirms this taste which I specify is totally personal and inevitably subjective. Indeed this Springbank is a very good whisky, which brings a plus in the range, variety and in reality this maturation is totally successful. But that's how it is, as much I appreciate a good glass of Burgundy, as much in combination with whisky, well! (Whisky Passion).
    • Nose
A syrup of red fruits dominates, making forget for a moment the typed style of the distillery. The texture is very fat. A powerful honey seems to declare itself. Aeration gives orange peel, alternating with sweeter fruits, more syrupy. There is a little tangy fruit that prevents me from fixing mango, even if there is a presence.
    • Taste
These are acidic fruits that receive us from entry. Then the whole will soften, with mutated wine influences. Spices intervene, but the cinnamon married with soot will take the most room, while being counterbalanced by these sweet fruits that we found in the nose.
    • Finish
Vegetable it is oriented on this bitterness that can have tea. Its traditional sticky side is needed to stay and give length.

a belter of a whisky, even better than the regular 12 yo and that means something. I find the palate overwhelming

if it wasn´t for the prive this had gained a 92/100
    • Nose
First of all, I find this shockingly expensive, but it´s springbank, so let´s give it a chance.

dusty and dirty, oaky with a fruitiness that stands like haze over a river when you´re out fishing on a summer´s morning (gonna show this to the springbankers, maybe they have a job for me)

don´t know which fruit it is that uses to be in springbanks. I´m sure sometimes I will find it in my local supermarket, announced as "sprinbank fruit" at an ernormous price.

there´s also quite some smoke in it and all in all the nose reminds me of the regular 12yo c.s.
    • Taste
f..k, is this good! take the 12yo c.s. and add red grapes and red currants. this is so sexy, I´m starting to dribble. what a harmony between dust, ashes, dirt, smoke  and fruit.

The nose was ok for me, but taste and finish aren't for the weak of heart. I can't really connect to this one, as much as I appreciate springbank most of the time. To much bitterness for my taste. 81/100
    • Nose
Springbanky nose, a hint of peat, wheat, barley - it smells quiet young at first glance. When the nose adjusts and the alcohol disappears, rich sweetness emerges vom the glas: Tropical fruits indeed, mostly dominated by wonderfully ripe peaches, maybe older citrus fumes? After that again typical musty springbank character reappears and stays.
    • Taste
The alcohol hits pretty hard, at first sour then quite some bitterness. This is harsh. Sweetness from the finish is noticable, but I am a bit disappointed, to be honest. Other described pepper, I can see their point, but for me it feels unround.
    • Finish
Older fruits are dominating here, bitterness stays for some time on the tongue.

    • Nose
Typical Springbank smoke and coastal notes with sea breeze and wet stones are matched by some nice tropical fruits, mostly pineapple, mango and papaya, and some peach and grape. Nice, complex and inviting.
    • Taste
Sweet, fruity, with red fruits dominating over the yellow ones. Fresh grapes, strawberries and raspberries, but also some mango and peach again. A touch of toffee. Nice texture, it's rich and oily. Some spicy pepper, probably due to the cask, shows up too.
    • Finish
Long, sweet, sticky almost, and quite hot with pepper and chilli all over the tongue. Some reminiscence of smoke.

This is a very sweet whisky.
    • Nose
A sour peated sweetness hits the nose with a strong arrival. Very dark and dense nose. Afterwards very Springbankish with the mango/papaya
    • Taste
A half a second sour where after the sweetness of the burgundy barrels arrive with a decent peat level.

Once again Springbank proves why they have such an excellent reputation. This was a fantastically complex and balanced whisky, immensely enjoyable to both sit and analyse and to just sip away at mindlessly. Wine casks can give whisky quite a spicy character, distinct from woodspice, it’s very much its own thing and it just works so damn well with the dirty, oily, slightly peaty Springbank character.

Nose: Salt, pickles, a sweet and hardy taste pop in my nose, sweet soy sauce. It seems like it hasn't opened up quite well and needs a drop of water. With water it clears up a bit, it are still apples backed in soy sauce or something like that.

Taste: Sweet, almost a port so sweet. But also a bit peppery due to the alcohol, a hint of peat. With water: The peat goes a bit more to the background, more typical Springbank comes up (salty, hardy, sweet).

    Body: Full and oily

Finish: Peat. This is quite a peaty expression of Springbank. IS that due to the casks? Finish is medium-long and peaty with some fruity sweetness. With water there is more wood influence, but I find the peat to prominent.

    Price: Overpriced

Presentation: Don't know this was a sample.

Comments: I don't think this is my cup of tea. I think it is to 'dark' and there is to much peat involved.

Oh yes ... I like it really well. This incredible spice together with the red wine barrel and the Springer-Brennereicharkater make this malt something very delicious. Great. I am glad that I have something more from this (soon).
    • Nose
the nose is very cool. Typically filthy jumper, with plenty of spice and oak. I do not smell the Burgundy even though it was in a red wine barrel, but you realize it. A slightly salty / maritime touch is also there. The alcohol is incredibly well integrated.
    • Taste
Creamy in the mouth. Again, the alcohol is super involved. The spice and the red wine barrel are immediately present again. In addition, slightly bitter oak and a small sparkle of red fruits. The second sip makes it even spicier. Incredibly delicious. Only a slight tingling sensation I feel on the tongue. I could keep that forever. Spices come with a little time. A bit of pepper, with nutmeg and a pinch of cloves
    • Finish
The finish is medium to long. Again comes this typical, dirty undertone which I like so much at Springbank. Seasoning, bitterness, a bit of chocolate and dry red wine are spreading.

Brutally well done! Perhaps my best whisky wine meeting ever.
(Together with the Balvenie PortWood finish.)
    • Nose
Wow! Quite amazing! Oily, smoky, peaty, salty effects with coffee, mediterranean fruits, sweet and sour effects
    • Taste
Peaty, spicy: pepper and chili, but next to it there are the creamy exotic fruits: figs, plums, coffee, salted caramel, almonds

    • Nose
Peaty, oily and briny - coastal and some salty notes. Cherries, grape fruits, some mocca, blackberries and cranberries. Orange, nectarines and also some young spirity tones. I get the Tuscany and Mediterranian idea from Ruud - I got some basil in the nose!
    • Taste
Peat, figs, coffee and woody. Spices - pepper, some sulpher, creamy exotic fruits. Also some strawberries notes like in a milk shake.

Another great expression by Springbank. It's quite a nice wine influenced whisky.

    Concerning price/performance ratio: 7/10
    • Nose
Slightly smoky, wine casks, malty earth, oranges, sweet and sour, some berrys in the back.
    • Taste
      Salted almonds, caramel, spicy, smoke.
    • Finish

    • Nose
a smoky note, wine (but rather white than red), solvents (towards the varnish), fruity (some lemon and cherry, grapes, burnt fruit compote, the sweetness of sour berries), sweet and salty, slightly mineral and greasy and an alcoholic touch (which does not bother)
    • Taste
dry and yet soft, a little bit of smoke, fruity and berry with a sour, earthy and woody note, all sorts of (above all exotic) spices, butter toast, herbs (mint), some bitter chocolate
    • Finish
medium; dry and very herbaceous, oak barrel, dry grass, dark chocolate, slightly salty and slightly fruity

A great new release by Springbank. This dram somehow brings me to Tuscany or Greece.
    • Nose
Oooh! I actually don't know where to start... Well, let's start somewhere. The typical and recognizable palate of a springbank is certainly there, in full effect! With that I mean the dirty nose of mellow peat, dustiness, maltiness, and earthiness. But the Burgundy is certainly there. Layers of dark red fruits, wine and sherry. Gives it a real mediterranian feel to it.
    • Taste
In the mouth it's full bodied. Exactly what you would expect from a CS Springbank. It feels that in the mouth the flavours are struggling a bit more to find balance. The wine notes work better in the nose than in the mouth. Still really nice though.
    • Finish
Long and powerfull. Earthiness and red wine.

The Springbank spirit shines once again, but I'm not the biggest fan of the Burgundy maturation. That's not to say that this isn't a good whisky. It's really good actually, but sometimes a tad too sweet.
    • Nose
A briny, mineral whiff at first, but quickly notes of fermented grapes take over. Plenty of sweetness. Treacle and cranberries. Blood oranges too. Some fresh oak as well. And of course a nice, but subtle amount of peat smoke.
    • Taste
A tad dry, that's likely the Burgundy casks talking. Sweet grapes, brambles, cranberries. More brine and peat, as well as dark chocolate and chili peppers.
    • Finish
Drying. Forest fruits. Aniseed. Long. Ending on a peaty note.

Great whisky! I like it, an unusual Springbank
    • Nose
Red wine is equally present with citrus fruits, limes and oranges. Smoke I have only very tender in the form of a slightly burned note, so burnt compote maybe, but pleasant. Maple syrup and a nut component. Hm, more fruit, now I also have sourcurrants and grapes. Very cool, but I probably would not have recognized as a jumper. Addendum: I did not have the typical oily-salty-dirty Springbank note, but now, after so 30 minutes in the glass, it comes and can slowly assert itself next to the complex fruit cocktail
    • Taste
Sharp, peppery onset. Powerful, fruity, vinous and sweet. Full-flavored but nicely complemented by herbs and tart, delicate bitter chocolate notes. In addition, slightly salty, some smoke (more pronounced than in the nose) and an earthy taste. With water, it is a little gentler and more fruity, but I taste the purest at best.
    • Finish
Dry, dark chocolate, fine dry oak, with fruit and a hint of salt. medium

At the same time I also had a Glen Garioch from the Burgundian barrel for comparison, but against the Springbank he has no chance. A very unusual and complex Springbank, which, despite its diversity, still has the typical Springbank characteristics. Just beautiful!
    • Nose
The light smoke and the acidity of the wine directly provide a very unusual entry into this Springbank - it smells a little like burnt fruit compote. Juicy orange and lime peel, vanilla and over and over again fruit acid, which already waters my mouth when smelling. After a little warmth of the hand, it becomes noticeably sweeter and the typical oily and salty spice of Springbank comes through, albeit much more subdued than usual.
Alcohol is never disturbing. For a pretty young 12 year already amazing.
    • Taste
The whole mouth is immediately flooded with a breathtaking sugary sweetness! The typical Springbank sharpness comes later, then the spice and again the sour fruit notes of the wine. Clear wood notes of the barrel complete the whole thing with a bitter dryness.
    • Finish
On the finish a bit grassy and light tannins of the wine, barely fruity. Some oak is also added.

A great dram which is worth its money. Is it more? Well you get a whisky which is matured in Burgundy Casks and it is a Springbank so definitely a whisky that should be tried and for me it is also a great daily option.. Means I will try to have him in my open bar for the future as it brings several nice facets. :-)
    • Nose
Very nice nose with sour grapes (more white than red wine) even fermented which I like a lot. After a while sweeter with some fruits (more red wine now) and also a decent smoke note.
    • Taste
The red wine is now definitely there! I also have some strawberries, the Springbank shows up (but not too much), dark berries, some dark chocolate! Nice!
    • Finish
the finish is a bit bitter and metallic but also not too bad but the worst part of the whisky. (if there is even a dark side ;-) )

12 years is a great age for a Springbank, whether as a normal CS version or as Burgundy maturation.
    • Nose
As expected vinous nose. Berry sweetness of blackcurrant blackberries and raspberries. The maturation in Burgundy barrel superimposed on the usual Springbank nose. The alcohol is a bit pungent. Over time, it becomes herbaceous and spicy.
    • Taste
On the tongue, he then shows that he is a spring bank. Fine dry fruity, with wildflower and wild herbs notes. The burgundy maturation ensures a continuous berry sweetness. Chocolate notes. Over time, it becomes even slightly peaty, as after a while earthy and loamy notes gain the upper hand.
    • Finish
Long and finally fruity finish again, slightly salty.

Great marriage of sweet, creamy fruits from the cask and oily, mineral Springbank spirit on the nose. A drop of water helped things along nicely, allowing ripe berries and cherries to emerge alongside the flinty/mineral notes, wet limestone, engine oil, woody oak, caramelised sugar (think of a top-quality creme brûlée), pistachios, and a waft of damp dunnage warehouses. In my humble opinion, the cask has helped to soften and sweeten some of the harsher elements I normally associate with younger Springbanks. The cask influence does something similar on the palate, softening the more 'industrial' elements of the Springbank profile without masking the distillery's DNA. As a result, again you get creamy sweet fruits and fresh garden herbs (coriander?) tempering the oily, waxy, and peppery notes from the spirit. Long, lingering finish, with plenty of woody tannins making their presence felt. I really enjoyed this dram. For me the cask influence has enhanced and accentuated the base spirit, making it easier to enjoy than I anticipated.

Very strong red wine note, but where is the smoke? It flew away, but more fruits, vineyard peach, strawberries, surrounded by a pink sweetness. This Turkish honey scraped from the block, mmh, today my oak desk stands firmly in spicy, peaty soil.

In the mouth, the aromas remain, only in the finish is something metallic, little wood, hardly peat, only fruit and sweetness. Compared to the Gaya Barolo much more pleasing, sweeter and milder. For the Gaya, the bacony peat note is more beautiful. The Burgundy is very special and so far the Springbank with the lowest distillery character.

Unusual springbank for sure, it seems like the casks won hands down.

    Single dram note
    • Nose
Freshly baked victoria sponge cake with whipped double cream, pecan nuts, fermented goji berries, cranberry's, Maple syrup, then after while hint of springbank peat, the sweet note mixed with light spicines is above it all like heavy curtain, hint of cinnamon sticks.
    • Taste
Soft arrival, sweet, golden syrup, spicy, salt flakes, caramel popcorn, cardamon and hint of mushroom, again the springbank distillery character is hidden deep inside.
    • Finish
Medium long on spices , tannins, dry

First fill Burgundy, yep you read that right and a genuine small batch. Ok, it's over 10,000 bottles small but that’s worldwide, and if you miss this batch you'll have to wait for those Burgundy casks to be refilled with a wait of another twelve years +/- for the next outturn - unless Springbank have another sneaky stack of casks in their warehouses. I’m told not
N: You can taste the distillate no question, and the copper still yet the overall presentation is more like sherry>port pipe than anything with just a little peat.
T: Again, a little peat showing. This works! It's like a little cognac has been added to a Springbank 12
F: Some dark notes reveal possibly more years than the 12 on the label - that’s the beauty of first fill.
C: A little funky [a little like Benriach Heredotus WB] except this works better, unexpectedly so with more subtlety and poise. Like the Benriach though, I'm not sure when I'd fancy drinking this such is it’s peculiarity.
