    H2H with GR 1970 2007 release.

This one is wild and more spirit-like, initially, its profile is like a wall but it loves water. The water breaks down the wall, thus revealing its true nutty and butter creaminess.

A blender glass comes in handy.
Aroma: fresh and fruity, honeycombs (wax), meadow flowers, vanilla, muffin with cinnamon ... 23
Taste: corresponds to aromatics and rolls in waves ... First, wax and cream, after a moment furniture polish, and immediately honey and apricot jam ... almond ... 23
Aftertaste: long and aggressive ... I would say a totalitarian aftertaste - nectar dictates a multi-layered sustainable palette of tastes to the receptors: honey, fruits, wax, nuts ... and all this is seasoned with a drop of varnish in white pepper ... A very long finish ... 22
Wonderful nectar! Perfect balance (23). Nothing sticks out. Comfortable fortress. In the blind, he would have given about 25 years, only the legs on the glass give age.
Tested for Christmas 01/07/2020. The bot cost 700 €.
    Reminded Clynelish.

It is very balanced and successful.
    • Nose
Sweet, sweet spices, passion, papaya, pineapple.
    • Taste
On the palate pepper, white fruit and exoticism. Mango, passion, strawberry.
      Lightweight leather. Sherry. Light woody.
      A little undergrowth and musk.
    • Finish
Long finish on the fruit and camphor, the dead leaf.

[December, 2017]  I bought a sample at Limburg whisky fair because the bottle price is clearly beyond my limits (as a drinker).  Diageo sold the sample exactly in relation to the bottle price without any markup - what is fair...

The colour is deep copper and the texture shows a few tears that build slow moving legs and a fat sticky ring at the top of the glass that very slowly moves downward.  The nose is delicate and complex on a fruity and autumn floral profile with honey and vanilla-toffee aromas.  Nicely balanced, I like it!  The dram arrives instantly coating on the palate but with some bitter-adstringent moments from heavy tannins (yes, the 36 years in oak take their toll).  But this is okay and not very distracting.  The taste is truly multi-layered on lots of different fruits and sugars in a spicy wooden framework.  Dozens of additional flavours pop up and vanish over time that make this tasting experience really enjoyable.  The finish is long and very herbal-spicy what is a nice contrast to the rather sweet taste.  Adding water smoothes the dram but I like it better when neat.

A true gem of this long-gone distillery and a very good cask selection by Diageo.  As a drinker I am willing to pay up to 300 Eurobucks for such a bottle...

Enough content, like a young man very distinguished and modest. Fruits and malt not exuberant but very pretty. It does not "feel" 51.2%! A little frangipane. Full mouth, generous, without aggression, very spicy, testimony of his great age.

    Enthusiasm 4/5

    Tasted blindly.
    • Nose
Yellow apples, caramel, malty, farmy notes and cucumber. Pleasant, but simple and uninteresting.
    • Taste
Bananas, liquorice, taste is very difficult to divide into notes, which I normally think can as a positive thing. Here it is just a dull taste though.
    • Finish
      Bananas, pastry, liquorice and bitterness.

Wonderfully balanced and a style that I simply haven't come across much. Great complexity and a treat for the taste buds.
    • Nose
Lovely notes of candle wax and creamy vanilla custard. Slightly perfumed with floral notes and lavender. A touch of pine needles, pencil shavings. Somewhat chalky. Develops into more fruity aromas of apricots and tinned pineapple. Soft and complex.
    • Taste
A lot more vibrant and bold than the nose. Plenty of ginger, but also a fair amount of wood shavings, all in good fun though :) Beeswax and chalk (again), with notes of bitter oranges and honey. A nice touch of smoke accompanied by pepper and nutmeg.
    • Finish
Spicy, waxy and a whiff of smoke. Long.

  19. Deloti scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

With water the profile hardly changes (maybe it stresses more the herbal notes). Better straight in my opinion.

Truly an excellent whisky. complex, very well balanced, rich and creamy.

last tasted in 2012. Really have to give it another go soon
    • Nose
fresh perfumed whisky with powerful floral and herbal notes. Hay, malt, wet ashes, fresh grass moving into subtle honey, vanilla and fruits -peaches, passion, oranges, kiwi .a succulent aroma. well layered
    • Taste
As good as the nose anticipated. Powerful and fresh. I really like this whisky.

More flower pollen that provides a waxy side. Again honey, fruits (same as on the nose but even fresher on the palate), herbs, apple pie, almonds-figs torta, ginger, vanilla and iodine. Smoke is present but stays in the background. Texture is smooth.
    • Finish
Long and waxy, never drying. with a light leathery flavor and orange liqueur bonbons.

    Nice nose but dusty.
Tart, astringent mouth, which goes in all directions. Lack of cohesion.

    Not seduced, suddenly.

Tasted 20/04/2016 in a line-up of closed distilleries.
    • Nose
Lovely mature, deep and layered nose. Vanilla pods, dried apricots/peaches, icing sugar (powdered sugar) and also cake icing. On the background a whiff of nuttiness.
    • Taste
Starts off quite hefty; oranges, but then quicky sweetens to apricot and peaches. Almond, anise, beeswax. Damn, it's as velvety as a satin nightdress on a woman's body!
    • Finish
Persists in taste, very long. Seems this woman has some very long legs :-).

Tasted this one after it's release with compliments from Diageo at the whisky festival in Leiden 2005.

I personally found this one more vibrant then the 50y old from the same series.

The 50y however was a stunning dram and very good in it's own way. It's actually not a fair comparison. But the 36y old had something extra in it!

This is a lovely and rare dram!

    Original Tasting Notes:

Deep amber, it is wonderfully mellow and highly aromatic, with a lovely flavour. The nose is vivacious for its age, complex, full and deep. There are scents of vanilla, black cherry and cooked apricots. Behind this, a leathery, masculine note emerges, with herbal overtones. Water mellows all these aromas into delicate notes of soft leather and wedding cake. The rich, smooth theme is carried on in the body, which is velvety and mouth-filling. On the plate it starts smoky, then reveals layers of taste. "A sandalwood box containing Turkish delight, dried fruits, black plum" says one expert. It is soft and sweet, with a good balance of primary tastes, all subtle. A little water smoothes out the finish, which is gloriously mellow and as you might expect, very long-lasting.

A characteristic Captain Barclay would surely recognise.

This whisky has been hand filtered, and as a result a natural sediment may form. This is entirely natural in a non-chill filtered natural cask strength malt whisky.

I do not think water is needed at 51.2% but here goes.

NOSE - More expressive now, creme brulee. burnt nrown sugar, butter

PALATE - More spirity. water actually livens it up but not as smooth now.It is still rich and reminds me of hot buttered scones.

    Finish - Long, creamy.

A great profile and very smooth with it. Water is not needed in my opinion.
    • Nose
Honey, wax, shoe polish, buttery, lemony, a little orange, butterscotch.
    • Taste
Very sweet at first but there is a little bitterness at the end at the back of the palate (in a good way) I get butterscotch, hot buttered toast, a little chalky, melon, ah there it is buttercream, like in a sponge cake, that is where the sweetness comes from. An excellent profile.
    • Finish
      Long, warming, soothing.

    Well, for a first
encounter with this distillery, it is quite a pleasant one. This bottle is
actually still available, but you will have to pay a king’s ransom for it.
Online you can get it for between 500 and 600 EUR (while last seen on auction
    for around 400 EUR).
    • Nose
      Fresh and floral
nose. Dandelions, tulips and lavender. This is upholstered
with apricots on syrup, pineapple in its own juices, Granny Smith apples and
litchi. Halfway through some juicy tangerines join in. But hardly any oak after
four decades. Quite fresh. Slowly becomes somewhat waxy, which I can only encourage.
Some honey and vanilla kick in. Very nice nose.
    • Taste
      Beautiful, sturdy
arrival, immediately honeysweet with a sour lining. The oranges talk first.
Slightly alcoholic, as if there is some Cointreau in there, but with (loads of)
ginger and (a pinch of) nutmeg. The apricots and pineapple are in hot persuit.
The apples are stewed. Again quite a bit of honey. I am having a hard time believing this is 36 years old. Amazing.
    • Finish
      Fairly long finish on
      oranges liqueur.

  32. ALouis scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Too bad the mouth is recessed, 91 for the nose and 87 for the mouth.
    • Nose
Complexity and finesse are at the rendezvous. First mineral and slightly iodized and then aeration evolves on yellow fruits and apples, then a slight smoke in the background, honey and vanilla. A floral nose and very pleasant, on which we could stay for hours.
    • Taste
Very malty, slightly smoky and on citrus, with a nice acidity.
    • Finish
Average finish on spices and fruits.

  33. Jeep51 scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

This whisky is not 36 years old. What a youth! A lot of yellow fruits, very floral and a nice freshness. Very delicate.
    • Nose
Surprising young: fruits (mainly peaches, but also apricot and apple). Fragrance, a floral side. It's fine and very clean. At aeration, more plant, herbaceous and, surprisingly, gunpowder!
    • Taste
Like the nose, it is floral and very fruity. On the other hand, here the 51% are more felt, it is relatively alive. A slight bitterness makes its appearance in the middle of the mouth, which is very pleasant. Slightly woody.
    • Finish
Long and fresh: grass, menthol, citrus and a little aniseed side.

  34. Sonett scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

This one was really nice fully comparable and even better than the GR's from the Rare Malts Series
    • Nose
Full body nose of a mature and elegant whisky. There are Apricots, vanilla, wax, molasses, leather and oak
    • Taste
Comes in mild and a little sweet slowly growing into complex spices with sherry, almonds, walnut and a very pleasant oaky tendency.
    • Finish
Finish is medium long to long doing from a drying taste over to almonds (slight touch of bitter almonds)

  35. Drochaid scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

Producer`s Tasting NotesNOSE: Vivacious for its age; complex, full and deep. Perfume and fruit dominate at first, led by vanilla and parma violets, black cherries and cooked apricots. Behind them lies a leathery, masculine note leading into burnt sugar, chocolate and mint.Water mellows all. Perfume and fruit give way now to wedding cake, treacle and soft leathery aromas.

BODY: Medium to full.Velvety and mouthfilling.

PALATE: Pleasantly soft at natural strength. Smoky to start, then a scented and deliciously layered fruitiness that reminds you of a sandalwood box containing sweet treats - Turkish delight, dried fruits, black plum.Water makes the mouthfeel more waxy, even teeth coating. The flavour is gloriously mellow and agreeably balanced.

FINISH: Polished leather and boat varnish, then more delicious caramelised fruit.

    A brilliantly-balanced mouth-coating beauty, this Glenury Royal is a

very special whisky from a tragically lost distillery. 92

    points from Whiskyfun!

  37. Feusi scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Surprisingly fresh and young for that age.
    • Nose
Fresh malt, peach and apricots. Vanilla and a kind of sweet Rum.
    • Taste
Sweet Vanilla, a bit of herbs, some perfume notes (lavendar).
    • Finish
Rather medium to long finish. Leathery wooden notes, some bitterness.

  38. ardpeat scored this whisky 93 points Expert Junior

certainly one of the best non-peated whiskys I've had the pleasure of tasting. a must.
    • Nose
wax, honey, vanilla, orange, eucalyptus, freshly cut grass. all very well controlled. complex and splendid.
    • Taste
very waxy mouth and a little greasy with a hint of bitterness which raises the whole. the flowers make their appearance. Back on the orange and the honey, but less pronounced than the nose. spices. more than perfect.
    • Finish
medium finish and a little woody. the wax fades to make more room for honey and orange. the spices remain delicately. high class.

  39. SilentStill scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

A very timid representative, who does not open his mouth, but firstly needs time and secondly a bit of concentration or a lot of leisure. This is not always easy for me, but today I was able to exercise patience and was rewarded
    • Nose
At first very discreet and restrained. This glenury takes a little more time than expected. After a few minutes, a detailed tour of the haystack, followed by sandy-cinnamon aromas that intensify over time, then light apple flavors (Granny Smith?) And strawberry jam mounds. Even after a while, the flavors are more restrained than intrusive and you have to take some time and more leisure to discover what this Highlander has in store.
    • Taste
Wow, wonderful drinking, and with well over 50 revolutions! Quite malty-sweet on the palate and surprisingly little wood. No wonder that there is also a highly acclaimed 50yo. Discreet musty-musty (and in a positive sense), balanced in itself and of perceptible maturity
    • Finish
Of decent length, mild and with pleasant bittersweet in the aftertaste.

  40. Dede scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

A very nice malt, refined and complex. The nose is a notch above the mouth, although it remains of very good quality. A whisky to drink at the beginning of tasting to capture all the nuances.
    • Nose
Delicate and fragrant. We have here a subtle alliance of honey, mandarin, floral notes, vanilla, before an acidulous and exotic fruity (still slightly green pineapple, passion fruit) does not appear. This delicacy is framed by notes of iodine as well as a very light smoke that give this whisky the grip it could miss. Evolution seems endless, with now wax, a little malt, and fruit and honey gaining momentum. Excellent!
    • Taste
The palate is lively and very fresh. The attack is at once floral and citrus, fruity (yellow fruits). The mid-palate becomes bitter (green fruits), the smoke becoming very discreet in favor of more mineral and spicy (ginger) notes.
    • Finish
The finish is quite long, but its intensity decreases quickly to leave you in the mouth the tangy bitterness of citrus zest.
