Holy mother of peat smokes what Lagavulin 16 used to be back in the glory days. Comparison to modern bottles… well, this would be a criminal offense. Moreover, I must say that, even though some power of originally low 43% abv is gone due to several decades of oxidation inside the bottle, this drum performs exceptionally well on the nose, and especially marvelous on the finish. PS. I can only dream of what could’ve been delivered at cask strength… mid 90’s I would guess. As for now… 90-

Firstly, soft and sweet peat, cotton candy. Tangerine, light tropical fruits, dried apricots, earthy notes, grass fields after morning mist. Honey and bbq glazed bacon, smoked on cherry sticks. Complimented by green jasmine tea and gentle mint leaves. Furthermore, maritime memories with fishing ropes in the near distance and dry fish are coming through. Excellent harmony, no sharpness, just pure class.

Pleasant and rewarding with light sweetness and tender texture, as well as some rounded oak spices. Some dried fruits and bacon rolled cheese sausage. Dangerously quaffable and delicious. Later red chili flakes, sweet and sour with bbq spices, and pine seeds.

On one hand, his age is clearly present. But one the other, he lacks some power of higher abv. Thus, only 88-

Smoke starts to dominate from a well aged perspective, more towards gourmet ham and campfire in the far distance. Seafood cooking on open fire that reminds Spanish paella. Herbs and sweet mint, later like delicate “after-eat” with milk chocolate. Seaweed chips with sesame seeds, black tea and dried apples. Medium long experience continues with lots of delicious aspects and memorable seaside layered flavors. 91-
