    Appearance: Amber, some legs.

Nose: Vanilla, toffee, malt, burnt brown sugar, cinnamon bun, almond, raisin, orange rind, rockmelon, fats and oils in a frying pan, cream, dusty old books and furniture, quite floral, some oak spice. Very nice and reminiscent of other 50-year-olds in the Book of Kells series.

Mouth: Rich, dense crystalline citrus fruits (orange, lime, lemon, mandarin, perhaps a little kumquat too), pepper and oak spice, caramelised sugar, something earthy and green. I detect a hint of berry and liquorice liqueur too.

Finish: In February 1940, a British destroyer was sunk by a German submarine near the Orkney Islands, and this whisky was made! It mightn’t be 80 years old like that other 1940 Glenlivet, but it certainly shows it age. But I digress… It ends on pepper-oak spice, melted butter and some slightly tannic notes, drying at the end.
