Now who says American Whiskey can’t be as delicious as scotch ? I’m one of those few lucky bastards who managed to get a hold of a sample of this nice balanced whiskey. The story of the whiskey makes believe it’s ‘just’ the rye whiskey they used to make and mix into cocktails years ago. Imagine that being true, that’s top notch blasphemy.

This whiskey, even from a plastic tumbler I am using travelling in an RV smells like there is a lot of sweetness, caramel, maple, coming up, with the hint of washer fluid telling me it’s high in alcohol, which my bottle agrees with. Tasting it is the exponent of what I just smelled. It’s oaky, but still recognizable as non-scotch. But maybe only because I already knew so. If you want to taste sherry casks, even when knowing better, they’re there. The taste has its trouble fading. It stays for more than average releasing more pepper as the time passes. This is a 91,5 at least on my scale of happiness, with the 92 on taste and palate. Wow.

I wanted to have this bottle opened for a couple of months before judging it. I'm usually a big fan of rye and this is pretty good, but it's no where close to being a great rye. This is around $325-350 USD on the secondary market (because there's no BTAC below $300), but there are plenty of much cheaper Willett's or SAOS ryes that are cheaper and better. Despite its ABV, this is a somewhat thin, one-dimensional rye, and quite uneventful.

Update -- After being opened for about 5-6 mos, it is now better than ever. Less hot and more balanced, with a heavier mouthfeel that allows the rye to shine more clearly. 90-91 points now.

Very caramelized on the nose, with spices. Extremely woody! And vanilla. In the mouth VERY spicy and VERY intense, note of discreet solvent. A good rye!

    Enthusiasm 4/5

Not to be confused with the 2010 release WB that has an abv of 63.45%, which the current picture on WB at time of writing [Nov ’15] is showing - but theres a lot of confusion as to what abv of the 2015 release officially, with plenty of errors online. The shop link [drinksupermarket] states the 2015 release as 64% and 63.45% on the same page and even the Buffalo Trace website LINK doesn’t shed any light. Hey ho, does anyone actually know?

N: Yes! Peppered steak, huge vanillas and fruity/jammy oils.

T: Exquisite yumminess with lots of twists and turns. Very bourbon like in character and rather drinkable neat - which certainly hasn’t been the case with previous releases.

F: Huge bourbon notes continue alongside equally huge herbal vanillas and some botanicals.

C: Less complexity than other Handy releases, but its an excellent rye indeed.

    Scores a B+
