Balmenach 10 year old 2005 cask 11000 Douglas Laing Provenance 46%.

    30ml sample consumed Jan 2022.

That’s a pale 10 year old. Pale yellow.

Aroma is very buttery up front, then a hint of stove gas and iced gems, moving to candy cane and boiled sweets, settling on something too saccharine like concentrated blackberry juice, Jolly Ranchers maybe or at least some sweet similar to that. Very ‘sweet’ on the aroma.

Taste is again blackberry flavoured boiled sweets, but also quite musty. There’s a strange disconnect between the impressions of sweetness and musty oak, but not one that jars completely. It’s actually perfectly drinkable and it’s certainly unique. A little bit of peppery char in the finish.

I actually think this one is decent enough. I thought its eccentricity was going to put me off but it’s one of those outliers that actually works. Over time the elements that seemed to clash come together and form a softly jammy whisky with integrated salt and biscuit vibes moving to a bitter char finish. The mustiness falls away and you’re left with something fairly enjoyable. 3.4/81
