Nose: rotten vegetables, burning embers on the beach, light hint of honey

Palate: smoked lemons, over-cooked spinach, a bit of salted fish

Finish: short-medium, very salty, dry, a dash of citrus

Overall: not your typical Caol Ila profile, higher proof does help a bit, decent daily sipper

I don't quite know how to feel about this whisky. Although it checks all the boxes, it didn't really do anything for me. The only Port Askaig I had before was the 100 proof and to be honest; I'd prefer that one every day of the week.
    • Nose
Initial peat, fresh citrus notes, hay and some coastal zest. Some iodine. Pretty middle of the road for a coastal/Islay malt but still a very pleasant smell.
    • Taste
From the bat a definite zesty, somewhat acidic citrus note, very lively. Also some brine and peat, and very clearly some oaky spicyness. Some nutiness appears (peanuts) and a distant, hard to define sweetness.
    • Finish
The oaky spicyness continues and lingers, as well as a strange sweet/sour citrus flavour. A little dry on the finish.

Note by Speciality Drinks Ltd;Initial light fruity aromas give way to an elegant sweet honeyed nose that precedes a powerful peaty and wood smoked palate with salty coastal notes. The mellow, lingering finish is considered a key character of older single Islay malt whiskies from this part of Islay.

there`s a few off notes, but I like how fresh this feels in the
beginning despite the strong peat, leather & earth notes. Not a fan
of it when I tried to give it time to breathe...

Transferring previous Note (2012.01.25) content into a Tasting Note.
    • Nose
fresh, peat, grey leather, wet earth, lemon, salt, slightly yeasty,
sand-y/mineral, hay ( & horsepiss, but that`s actually not as bad as
      it sounds... ) (87)
    • Taste
peat, malt sweetness, peanuts (snickers...?), granite, (85)
    • Finish
more peat, some salt, sprinkles of lemon, slight but pleasant bitterness, (84)
      Later:
seem to turn flat within a short-ish time and develops some weird
sawdust on the palate (64), rubber & white (pineapple) gummybear
notes in the finish. (67) ... yes, I don`t like white gummybears!

Lack a little complexity. The nose is discreet. But this is a very fine whisky, fat and pleasant in the mouth.
    • Nose
Slight smoke. The nose evokes lemon juice, salt (little), wood and a lot of ashes. Alcohol is well integrated.
    • Taste
Very sweet, always with touches of iodine and lemon. We also find the sweet acidulous. The whole is soft and very fine. It is drunk alone, virtually no bitterness. A little vanilla cream for the creamy side.
    • Finish
      Average. Iodine-peat-lemon-earth.

  13. Erik Elixir scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

N: citrus, fondant, sugar, honey and lemon biscuit
T: biscuit and great (old) wood smoke
F: a bit poor lingering finish

  14. Edwin de Lange scored this whisky 93 points Expert Senior

This is simply a great dram, very full, with a deep rich sweetness and herbal notes before the peat kicks in to round off an explosion of tastes. A heavenly dram for peat lovers!

Recently this was replaced by the Port Askaig 19.

  16. ontherocks scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

N: Peat smoke, herbs, citrus, pepper, thyme, vanilla
T: lemon, thyme, tar, smoke, very sweet, full, train to the bitter, clear, honest
Q: Very long, smoky, lots of peat, maritime, sweet, yet well balanced

Recently I received a sample of the Caol Ila 17 yo Port Askaig and today I tried this one and was happily surprised by this very pretty and sweet/honeyish liquid. After a while I got a good peat/smoke taste in my mouth and was very content!  A nice, rather long finish was the icing on the cake! 87 pnts.

  18. Feusi scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Fresh citrus fruits surrounded by a honey sweetness thickle the nose. Smoke and peat overtake the sweetness after a while and ending in a long and warm finish. real good stuff.

A nice alternative to the OB 12 years.
    • Nose
Lemon and orange in first impression on peat background. Orange peels. The nose is more subtle than the 12-year-old OB. He is also medicinal. It is also reminiscent of the alcohol of the mimeographs.
    • Taste
Sweet attack on honey and lemon. Very nice balance, everything is well melted and integrated. Presence of peat not aggressive and a slight bitterness.
    • Finish
Intense then fades quickly enough. Retro-olfaction is interesting.

This is a good whisky, but one thing I don't like about this on is, it's the same flavors in the nose, taste and finish, I want wider range of flavors..
    • Nose
Peat, smoke and seaweed, with hints of citrus.
    • Taste
Sweet honey and smooth peat flavors.
    • Finish
Medium long finish, lemon and tar..

nice clean dram! could be a good peated whisky for the summer!
    • Nose
      citrus, minerals, floral/heathery peat
    • Taste
attack of citrus, silky moutfeel, nuts on the back palate. light and very drinkable!
    • Finish
clean and short with a light peaty finish

I think this is a Flop because of the weakness of the whisky. It tasted like a lowland, nothing wrong with that, but put it on the label.Looks like Caol Ila is dumping her casks. This year there are 20 new releases of Caol Ila!
