[April, 2019] I had this dram during the charity tasting at the Limburg whisky fair.

I am not sure why this dram is hyped (not to mention the ridiculous price) but this is surely not because of its taste. To me this is sub-standard quality in almost all dimensions - simple, flat and unbalanced with a non-existing finish. Sorry, I do not want to insult anyone who likes it (my sincere apologies)...
    • Nose
      86 86
The colour is yellow gold and the nose is rather shy first but opens up on breathing nicely. It offers a creamy toffee-caramel profile with some bitter wooden and tea-ish aromas. It is balanced but not really complex, to be honest. Nothing special about it (neither flaws nor highlights), to my olfactory cells this is an average nose only.
    • Taste
      83 83
The taste is rather on the bitter side with grassy, tobacco, green tea and ashy flavours contained in a firm wooden frame. Some barley sugars try to sooth this but they are defeated by the fierce bitter flavours. After some chewing floral and toffee notes join in which balance the taste a little better. Forget about any reduction - this dram just gets (even) flatter and flatter.
    • Finish
      78 78
The initial mouthfeel is - oops - non-existent. This dram does neither warm nor coat, there is just nothing. The finish is short like a lightning with a minor bitter-astringent flash (tannins). A dram that leaves no impression after swallowing ... is pretty bad.

Within the first few minutes of the doors opening, more than 100 flippers [buying before trying], formed a misshaped but orderly queue in front of the Whisky Exchange Show shop to get their hands on less than 100 [think it was 75] allocated show bottles of Hanyu. Meanwhile on the other side of the hall, the man himself Ichiro Akuto stands unoccupied at the Number One Drinks stand, waiting to pour the 'juice' that many of those successful in buying a bottle may never actually get to try.
N: Plenty of chat from an array of cask types it seems. Sherry [port & cognac?] fruits and bourbon candy make for a colourful nose.
T: Malty, fruity and peppery - lots of wood.
    F: Fruity and ashy
C: Rather fine. The pricing was fair given its potential re-sale value. Probably should have queued, aah well - i got to try it! If Hanyu’s timing [with regards to single malt] wasn’t right, it seems Chichibu are perfectly placed to capitalise on a whisky boom currently exploding round the world, and with demand for quality, craft spirits.

    Scores a B+

Intersting and meaty to me, but not amazing. I quickly got rid of the 3 other bottles I had since the price to taste ratio was too far off :)
    • Nose
      86 86
sichuan pepper, sweet, bubblegum, vanilla, meaty, brown sugar
    • Taste
      85 85
wooo weeee. spicy and meaty right off the bat. then some slight licorice notes, honey, hot vanilla, oily

with water, more bitter, a lot more honey vanilla notes, some buttered bread, banana, lots of oak
    • Finish
      85 85
very warm, some glue notes, meat again, medium length. oily

with water the finish gets longer, more spicy, tropical notes show up, some coconut and pineapple juice

    Very nice despite the reduction.

An enchanting nose, full of bourbon and exotic fruits, one thinks of the yellow peach, the naughty brugnon, the maturity is there as well there with leather and the beaume of the brown tiger.
Fine aniseed freshness, vanilla and sweet wood.

The palate is full and fat, beautiful elegance on yellow and white fruit, peach and pear, nashi, plum, dried fruit and vanilla, wintergreen. A little leather and cigar box.

Long finish on the barrel and vanilla fruit and honey flower, clove and cinnamon.

    Well.

Very nice. Light exoticism is welcome. Beautiful assembly.
    • Nose
      We feel pretty good alcohol.
From peach to syrup. Very slight exoticism. Plum.
      Wood. Camphor. Butter.
    • Taste
On the palate the woody takes over.
      Yellow and white fruits.
      Sawdust, green fruits. Banana.
    • Finish
Long finish on spices, sherry, leather, chocolate and exoticism.

  7. ColdAesthetics scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Very full-bodied, buttery part. For more points I miss a few more shifts and in particular there is the already noticeable alcohol note in so "little" percent in the way.
    • Nose
Rittersport hazelnut milk chocolate, very sweet and buttery, ripe fruits, red apple in honey, rumrosines, banana jellies, caramel flow, maraschino cherries, cocoa powder, camphor and oregano, strawberry cake later
    • Taste
Strong start for the 46.5%, also the buttery, rumrosines, dark honey, banana jelly, sprightly even I would say, maraschino cherries, camphor, fennel, toasted notes of peanuts and hazelnuts, some baked apple, cocoa, tannins, maple syrup, avocado
    • Finish
Beautiful crisp oak, pure salted caramel, banana chips, raisins, hints of cherry spirit, nuts, medium long, warming

  8. wisekycourse scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

    Japanese, qualities of rising value
    • Nose
nose of a blend with diffuse scents, on the ripe fruits, on the cream, on very sweet spices, on woody neither too much nor too little, real alchemy with sherry in return. a little glue or encaustic .
    • Taste
sweetness on the palate, important floral scents, a little medicinal, then the orange fruit compote arrive as well as the ever present wood.
taste of toffee and milk chocolate, return of spices giving a little freshness.
