Young and wild, powerful and intense! For only 8 years this Glenrothes has an incredibly intense and multi-layered aroma, the barrel must have been extremely active. If it weren't for the extremely high alcohol content, I would have predicted it would be older. A very great bottling, absolutely undervalued for me!

    22/23/22/22 (89P)
    • Nose
Bright reddish copper shines in the Premium Snifter, dried grapes and berries rise powerfully, caramelized sugar mixes with oranges and mandarins, the alcohol is quite present. Raisins, plums and sour cherries end in chocolate and toffee, hazelnuts and spicy wood tones emerge. The alcohol is very present again, but also somehow harmoniously integrated ... chocolate and mint, again dried fruit and caramel.
    • Taste
The first sip flows creamily through the throat. Caramel, milk chocolate and dried berries start the first sip, here too the alcohol is extremely present, but is not a problem at the moment. Raisins, toffee, caramel, chocolate and roasted hazelnuts stick creamy on the palate, pleasant sharpness tickles on the tongue. I would actually play with a little water now, but the creamy and voluminous nature keeps me from doing so. The saliva is stimulated, chocolate and toffee stick again on the palate, hints of sour cherries and sweet raisins swim in the stimulated saliva under the tongue. Hazelnuts and creamy wood tones herald the aftertaste ...
    • Finish
Dark and sweet sherry flavors rest creamy and oily on the palate, an oily film of caramel and milk chocolate, raisins and a hint of lukewarm espresso sticks to the tongue. The wonderfully intense aromas remain voluminous and long on the palate and stick between the tongue. Fantastic!

    Very appealing.
    • Nose
A clear alcohol, with baking cocoa, dark chocolate, sherry and dark berries (but only in the background)
    • Taste
Dark berries (now more pronounced), light spice
    • Finish
(amazing) short to medium length, noticeable spiciness, dark berries, dark chocolate, cocoa and a dryness is spreading.

  4. The Macallan scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Young, frisky, full of flavor and need some time before it opens up. Water is quite essential for this one.
    • Nose
Lots of alcohol that burns your nose, malty and sherry (reduced: more fruit, lovely woody notes, develloping, drenched with lovely estery notes (apricots perhaps)
    • Taste
Creamy, winey, dry with some chocolate (reduced: more fruityness and spicy notes)
    • Finish
Woodspices, warming and spiced oranges, quite full and long

This is a nice sherry whisky to my liking. Despite his youth, he is beautiful complex and spicy. I tried it with a decent splash of water, without it would probably be too blatant.
    • Nose
Sherry, vanilla, clove, hazelnut, red fruits, peach
    • Taste
Strong onset, oak, red fruits, red multivitamin juice, caramel, nutmeg, orange chili chocolate, coffee beans.
    • Finish
      Long, spicy and sweet behind.

  8. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Water helps here and then quite pleasant to drink.
    • Nose
For a very short time I had tomato mozarella with balsamic in my nose, but the whole thing quickly changes in a chocolaty direction, lumumba, raisins, nut cream, some mint, some alcohol, slightly floral in the background, with water the whisky, herbs opens , something Maggi, more harmonious overall
    • Taste
intense, sweet nut cream, plum must, dark chocolate, sparkling sweet, very nice, the mouth is full, salty oak, some wood, with water, the plums come to the fore, creamy, now more milk chocolate
    • Finish
become dry, slightly salty, tart, nuts, espresso, medium-long, warming, here too some alcohol in the finish, the mouth becomes slightly numb, with water less tart, creamy, even less alcoholic

    • Nose
A lot of vanilla sugar. Marzipan, raisins, cake dough. Some menthol. A bit more fruity with water.
    • Taste
Malty with ripe fruits and some honey. Vanilla, dark chocolate. Medium.

  12. Othorion scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Great malt, I would have appreciated blind for well over 8 years.
    • Nose
Sherry, sweet cherries, cherries in chocolate like Mon Cherie, raisins, apples, mint and over and over chocolate With water the mint is gone, but more apple and the Black Forest cherry feeling
    • Taste
Coffee with caramel and dark chocolate, a nice interplay between sweet, spicy ginger and slightly bitter oak, cherry, warm and oily in the mouth
    • Finish
      Ginger, espresso and dark chocolate

he tolerates water; then this is a really delicious malt, in which chocolate dominates in all variations. That must have been a real good barrel.
    • Nose
Overpowering, dark chocolate and chocolate cake (Black Forest Cherry meets best); dark, red fruits (cherries and apples); Straciatella and iced coffee; Moncherie; pickled nuts; Over time, the chocolate raisins and dried fruits; the alcohol is noticeable
    • Taste
oily, now the alcohol is fully there and covers almost everything; a little chocolate comes through; there must first pure water; then it gets pretty sweet and creamy; Raisins and dark fruits; the chocolate is still very dominant
    • Finish
medium; the alcohol is not as extreme as the taste would expect; getting dry; dark fruits; with water it is really nice sweet and chocolate with raisins

A strong part. Was a gift and I'm still happy about it. Blind I would have appreciated the colleagues much older.
    • Nose
Comes full and voluminous. Dark, sweet sherry. Something cooling with time. Dark, ripe fruits in an older fruit basket. A very pleasant touch of chocolate. With time, something comes through that reminds me of a mixture of menthol and tobacco. Exactly ... glacier pinch (snuff). The high alcohol content is there, but not unpleasant! Fits ... With water: not so dark anymore. More sweetie. The tobacco / menthol note has unfortunately given way. The fruits are getting lighter. Vanilla comes through nicely now. Above is this great chocolate note. But not so intense anymore.
    • Taste
Powerful and multi-layered. Instant espresso with caramel. How cool. Bitterness of the oak joins. A chic interplay of sherry, oak, caramel and espresso. Marzipan comes after and brings ripe, dark, sweetish fruit.
    • Finish
Medium in length and brings espresso. Dark chocolate remains.

Wow, what a grenade! An aroma to bite, a power that wraps around you and a maturity that seems unbelievable at 8 years old. I am impressed.
    • Nose
Imaginative creamy sweetness immediately spreads and stays on all the time, one is tempted to drink immediately, Vamille cream, cherries, man is good !, Sherry, subtle citrus / menthol notes in the background, lots of milk chocolate, nougat, toffee, some raisins , Plum jam, barely alcohol
    • Taste
Honey-sweet cherries, powerful, distinct oak, dark and milk chocolate, dark fruits, intense and glowing
    • Finish
Mon Cheri, oak, creamy, medium long, covering the tongue, a bit earthy, warming, the mouth stays dry and satisfied

    Glenrothes 1997 DR WID: 74923

Nose: short menthol, lots of chocolate, some disinfectant from the hospital, raisins, hazelnut, nougat. Later plums and apricots. Today slightly stinging in the nose.
After the first sip: Toffee is added, menthol is gone, raisins are still there.
Taste: honey sweet, chocolate, raisins, dried plums, light bizzels, coffee comes, ginger, it is getting sharper
Departure: coffee and ginger stay, my tongue burns, raisins are still there, it gets a bit earthy and then stays warm for a long time in the throat and mouth, all still slightly covered with caramel. After a short time still warm in the stomach.

very delicious low money (65€ - 03/2016) whisky which does not seem to have 66%.

    Very well done!

  20. Gloin scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

A very active barrel, considering that the whisky is only eight years old. I would have estimated blind twice as old. Had he actually been twice as long in this barrel, he would probably be inedible superimposed. But that's a great whisky. Unbelievable that despite this strength and youth, he does not need water. I am impressed. Addendum: after some time the whisky got boring very fast. There is hardly anything to discover behind the superficial savory notes.
    • Nose
Cherries and plums, surprisingly little alcohol, and that at 66.1%, chocolate sauce, almonds, all very dense and intense, great
    • Taste
as expected, strong onset, the mouth begins to glow, a pleasant warmth spreads, the whisky needs no water, strong oak, dark chocolate, the dark fruits of the smell move against the oak in the background, but are still there
    • Finish
The cherries are again covered with very dark chocolate, a bit astringent, but only something, everything looks very ripe, the spice covers the tongue, medium long

  21. Iron Lung scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

The Adelphi Glenrothes in the "same" age are much better and rounder, the alcohol in this bottling is not really well integrated. Really many flavors are also missing.
A pity, I thought there is more!
    85 points
    • Nose
      With water:
Alcohol is no longer quite so in the nose, seems more balanced, sweet, very apricot
    • Taste
      With water:
Clear round, malt, slight sherry influence
    • Finish
      With water:
Intense seasoning and much sweeter than without water
