To begin with the bottles I have had are all from 2015 through 2017. My review is not of the new numbered batches, which appear to have much lighter color in the liquid. Regardless this is an amazing dram that shows quality when you enjoy it. There is no way you can rate this in the 70's. If you did, someone gave you mac 12 in it's place. This is much better than mac 18 for those of us that have no snobby age statement criteria. Myself and my friends have compared the rare cask to 18 and Estate Reserve. The rare cask won with the estate reserve a close second. With a little water the estate reserve pulls away and wins.

The nose is a wonderfully deep fruit with a little floral note.

This is a wonderful dram. It is what I expect Mac 18 to be at it's price. Very smooth on the palate, with dark fruits berries, plums and raisins.

Finish is a little short but not bad. This is where a higher abv would have helped. I really wish macallan would do it's stdc bottles at 46% abv.

I think that a nice box is not enough to explain such an exaggerated price and, I must say, I expected a lot more from a "Rare Cask" Macallan.

    Disappointed...

Tasted at Whisky in Leiden 2017

really fullbodied sweet sherry whisky, without getting anywhere to dry, bitter, or chocolaty.

real full red fruit finish to boot.

Very bitter - I cannot even claim it's drinkable and for sure not enjoyable. Hands off! Don't waste your money. Glad it was a sample for free.

Vanilla, honey, yellow fruits, little citrusy, whiffs of fresh rubber, hints of sherry wood, spices, pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon
    • Taste

Punchy, fresh, green and unripe fruits, little leafy, oaky notes, little sweetness
    • Finish

Medium long, more greenish and bitter notes

    rare?
macallan and his new whiskys for apprentices !!!!
    • Nose
sweetness and a little wood, a little fruit not differentiated!
    • Taste
strangeness after 18 fine oak not to find more transcendent!
it's soft, soft, almost flat, after you have to wait to smell wood, not peppery spices, caramel, it's honeyed, the fruit is stewed, but a fruit compote in bulk, a little cocoa back
    • Finish
      simple, monolithic, not very expressive

the nose was promising. so much sherry and complexity, it was just smiles. the first sip - the very very initional taste was quite all right and from there it went south! the taste and the finish faded away so quickley that I could not believe it. not only that it was getting worse with the next sips. just plain oak, bitter, the fruits were gone, just some traces of it. the sherry influence was too little, just nothing.
Did not extra rate price and presentation - this is just not my style of whisky.

Not a fan of this one. It comes in a very fancy bottle with a very fancy price but what’s inside it very odd, and not in a good way. I found it sickeningly sweet to my tastes and lacking anything else to it really.
    • Nose
Red liquorice. Sweet, sticky raisins. Honey. Toffee. A little too much woodspice.
    • Taste
Sweet sherry, leads into dry. Marzipan. Cinnamon candy. Cloves. Cherry flavoring.
    • Finish
Medium. Drying. Stewed fruit. Red liquorice. Woodspice. Nutmeg.
