    Notes by producer;

    Matured for nigh-on two decades, this is a fruit-dominant Bw bottling from a pair of ex-bourbon hogsheads. Perhaps the best Bw so far.

    Cask details;
    Five refill hogsheads, two from 1995 and three from 1996.

    Tasting Notes;

    Equally balanced between fresh lemon and orange notes and smoke. There is some smoked-fish aromas, too, along with savoury olive tapenade and pineapple.

    Lime zest and citrus fruits merging with light peat smoke and more tropical fruit. Strong emphasis on the fruit with this dram.

    The fruit outweighs the smoke, with a dry note right at the death.

  2. lachaineduwhisky did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

    Direct, very generous on bacon, with a lot of roundness. Ditto in the mouth, with some exotic fruits. Moderate peat, well dosed.

    Enthusiasm 4/5

    Really, a Bowmore? If I had never bet blindly on it. Goes to Lagavulin 12, I like it very much.
    • Nose
      Maritime smoke, mixed with the smell of fermented fruit. Salty. Seaweed. Above all, a touch of freshly squeezed lemon juice. At the beginning slightly stinging alcohol note. From lemon juice becomes pineapple, the smoke is quickly gone. Blind I would never have typed here on a Bowmore.
    • Taste
      Strong start with a lot of smoke. Pepper and salt and directly back the bright fruits from the nose. Add coconut milk and bitter almonds. Nothing with "aged mild", which is direct and hearty.
    • Finish
      Long and dry and still smoky-fruity. Nice salty on the tongue.

    N: Vibrant with notes of clarity, namely, tutti-fruity ice-cream and peated cowpats. With time its less fruity and more farmy.
    T: Like the nose really, peaty>tutti-fruity with a chalky, dry-grain element
    F: Soft and rounded
    C: Job well done as is expected from Speciality.

    Scores a B [87]

    Wow what an exciting Bowmore. Very unique, I really like the mix of Bowmore smoke and tropical fruit notes - very exciting. Lies wonderfully oily and voluminous in the mouth. There is a lot to discover, it's really fun and hits my nerve.

      beautiful maritime smoky note; behind it there are great sweet tropical fruit notes - exciting !; Pineapple; Kiwi; Lemon; some tangerine; Vanilla; everything is wonderfully balanced and coordinated
      - very exciting and delicious, I can smell it forever
    • Taste
      93 93
      It is voluminous and syrupy / oily in the mouth; pink grapefruit; Lime; as a counterpoint, sweet tropical fruit notes of mango and pineapple; everything accompanied by a wonderfully integrated smoky note; some pepper
    • Finish
      92 92
      medium length; tropical fruit notes; salty; somewhat bitter oak; smoke

  6. Thermidor scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

    Tasted head to head with Bowmore 21 1990-2012 DL O&R (91).
    • Nose
      Varnish or some kind of turpentine (positive, not nasty), and putty. Greasy and slightly dirty. Litchis, plastic bags and Vicks citrus drops. A touch of salt maybe but it's not that marine for a Bowmore. The nose is a bit assertive but also inviting, and delightfully oldschool and charming.
    • Taste
      Wood is an undercurrent at best. The palate focuses on coaly soot, concrete, pitch and faint ripe fruitiness. Really quite oily, with this fresh and sweet side tempering the peat. The fruitiness is much more tropical than for example Caol Ila's citrus.
    • Finish
      Apart from the tropical fruit it's too ephemeral for me. Still, the beginning of the tail is excellent. It just should go on a little while longer.

    just won a second bottle of this wonderful dram for 95 euro @ the whisky auction… but after Serge's review, don't think it will happen again ;-)

    Good stuff!

  9. vlad78 scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

    Very bright and slightly aggressive whisky.
    • Nose
      90 90
      Swamp, damp forest in fog after rain, peat, moss, dead leaves, peat smoke, sweet melon and yellow apple, pear and apricot.
    • Taste
      88 88
      Sharp, sharp as a blade, smoky, peaty, hot, full of yellow ripe and juicy fruits.
    • Finish
      89 89
      Long, bright, smoky and sweet. With a slight hint of iodine.

  10. Imp scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

    in the aroma, first an apple, then a wet tree, bacon, citrus. The barrel fortress still rules, the most powerful taste (oil, fatty fish, salted olives), no less powerful finish (salt, smoke and citrus). Feels like Bowmore in bourbon is a kind of hybrid of Kaol Ila and Ardbeg. Score = 22 22.5 22.5 22, 89/100.
