  1. pere scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Fruity, freshness, beeswax, polished wood, spices, raisins, a bit of exotic fruits, apricots, bananas, a bit of honey, a meadow of flowers.
    • Taste
Sweetish spiciness, malt, a bit of wood, honey, fruity freshness.
    • Finish
Malt, spices, oak, fruity, quite fresh, wood.

  2. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

I'm actually quite barrel-messed, but this is 43% that are so intense that I do not miss any percentages here. Great whisky. He puts every 15yo single cask in my pocket.
    • Nose
Beautiful clear sherry, dark fruit, sweet,, a little licorice, a good portion of oak, wet tobacco, I like it very well, in the background are also nuts to discover a bit of iodine, dark chocolate, cocoa, totally intense, complex, no false mark
    • Taste
full-bodied, creamy, oily, intense, full load of sherry, licorice again, comfrey, oak, leather, tobacco, a touch of wood juice, the mouth is full of aromas, dark chocolate on the palate
    • Finish
the dark fruits last forever, concentrated raisins, nuts, the oak is there, but not intrusive, great

Great sherry, but you can also enjoy the Balvenie charachter. Not weak, but the 48.2% version can hit you harder!
    • Nose
Big sherry. Prune, raisin, toffee, antique skin, cocoa, coffee, spices and oak.
    • Taste
Despite it's 43%, it's powerful. Less sherry, bigger tannic oak. Chocolate, coffee, raisin and prune.
    • Finish
Long, dry, oaky, with sour fruits: blueberry and blackcurrant.

    SherryOak

AGED 17 YEARSThis limited edition release from 2007 spent all 17 years of its maturation in first fill Oloroso sherry casks. The result pays homage to the casks’ southern Spanish origins - a rich and intense single malt, characterised by mixed spice and sweet sherry fruitiness.Rich and intense with complex layers of sherried oak, spiced apples, caramelised pears and toasted almonds, the aroma of The Balvenie SherryOak also intrigues with hints of beeswax, fresh ground spices and a subtle earthiness. On the palate, first impressions are of mixed spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves) combined with sweet, fruity, sherried flavours. On the addition of a little water a delicate vanilla character reveals itself with a beautiful stewed fruit sweetness and a touch of oak tannin. Its finish is rewardingly long and rich with a touch of dryness at the very end.

I somewhat agree now with Serge. Now that I let the bottle go and get some air. That all being said I still believe the new wood is better then the Sherry Oak. Don't get me wrong these two bottlings are the best in the 17yr bottlings.
The New wood and Rum Cask are in that top 3 for me as well. You just simply can't go wrong with any of them though. They all bring something different to the table.

    Serge says;

Balvenie 17 yo ‘SherryOak’ (43%, OB, 2007)  This brand new Balvenie was fully matured in Oloroso sherry casks. Colour: deep amber with bronze hues. Nose: starts immediately dry, mostly on coffee and bitter cocoa, which is certainly unusual for Balvenie, but rather beautiful. Gets even more coffeeish (all kinds of coffee, from espresso to café latte) and rather perfectly spicy (cinnamon, nutmeg, hints of star anise), and then more ‘antique’, with old leather, wax polish, old furniture... Discreet whiffs of soy sauce, but not meatiness here. I really like this one, very cleanly dry. Mouth: a slight weakness at the attack due to the low strength but it’s soon to take off, on these coffeeish and chocolaty notes again, prunes, Corinth raisins, the same spices as on the nose and a slight, pleasant tannicity (not bone-dry). Maybe the middle is a bit weakish again but the finish is longer again, rather full, clean, still very dry, with pleasant tannins and an aftertaste on cooked blackcurrants and prunes. A success I think. 88 points.
