Great whisky made just ‘ok’ by poor presentation. Whoever thought 42.6 was the best abv to present this at needs to do some self-reflection. I got this at a 3x discount to RRP at auction, but it’s still annoying to see good whisky mis-treated.

I suspect that at cask strength this could easily be a 90 point dram.
    • Nose
The low ABV probably softens this a bit and adds to the sensation of age - but this feels quite old to me. Good quality cask, well made spirit in a classic Speyside profile - feels very similar to Glen Grant, in that they share this mentholic grain spice note. Soft, round and malty, with candied fruits, some orchard, some tropical. Zesty citruses, with a tart green edge, and well balanced oak. No waxiness or oiliness, this is a clean spirit (if there is oil, it may well have been filtered out!), but I do sense some spirit sulphur coming through and providing some extra body. There’s also a floral nuance, along the lines of the more candied-citric types of pink roses (the real is one of my favourite smells on earth). This would be excellent at 46% - you can tell the experience on the nose is massively muted due to the dilution, as the aromas are constantly having to fight against the ethanol.
    • Taste
The flavour’s really nice, there’s a little bit of oil to the texture and again great balance between wood and spirit. The palate hasn’t lost as much as the nose to the dilution, but I suspect this would be superb at a higher abv. Malt and candied fruit lead again. A nice bit of zingy ginger spice runs through everything. Super juicy, sweet fruits. Interesting saltiness. Has good development and length, but it’s hard getting the detail as it’s very shy.
    • Finish
The finish is overly soft but hangs around for a long time. The ever-so-slightly oily fruitiness stays pleasantly coating the mouth. Good quality caskwood is evident as expected at this age, but in great balance and there’s no bitterness or dryness.
