N: Showing pleasant savoury/sweet creamy, murky/earthy malted grain with plenty of neutral single grain working in tandem besides the complexities contained within the Islay single malts. Other notes include peated blackberries, composted fruits, tannic sweet/sour ripe apples, ginger, honey pancakes, caramel>butterscotch [E150a for sure], oak bark chips, vanillas, hints of tobacco/peat/smoke/flint/gunpowder and a hint of meatiness [venison and liver pate sausages no less]. Well integrated and married blend, easy to read with plenty of notes to wax lyrical about but main gripe is the over dominant grain content. This would be ok if it weren’t so neutral, bland and uneventful.
T: Rugged arrival, good strength and pace, first showing flinty, tannic apples and blackberries/raspberries and thickens on mouthfeel as it moves from fruits into lush grain and then into chocolate. Water elongates the journey. Rugged, tannic, sweet=<savoury malt is the order of the day, a little too rugged at time mind you and arguably too reliant on the E150a to pull it out of trouble.
F: Flinty, iron fillings and ashy hints attach themselves to the chocolate malted grain, which in itself is hard to define, such is the movement encapsulated within the complexity of this blend. [Grain] spirit led but theres appears to be some old stuff in the mix.
C: Cons: a heavy reliance on the neutral [boring] single grain content and the E150a. Pros: Ive heard good things about older versions of Black bottle and i concur. Enough complexity in the mix saddled with a well married blend that is stupidly easy to gulp. Suggested improvements: a higher aged more complex grain, a higher single malt content and bottled at 46% with no E150a - and you have a winning blend.
