Tasting of the 1978 Port Ellen from DL (WB6260) against its sibling from 1979 (WB31025).
    • Nose
      88 88
Salty banana, hay, a touch of oil, and plenty of iodine. It strongly resembles Laphi Peat. Beautiful intensity, but nothing here hints at its venerable age. The 1979 vintage, while going in a completely different direction, suffers from the same problem regarding expectations.
    • Taste
      90 90
Now there's a lot of oil, dust, and ash. The age is fully present now. Beautiful spice and intensity. The wood is starting to show. Then cocoa, later hay and pear again. It builds up nicely and slowly in the mouth. You can always discover something new. A touch of orange on the finish. The same applies to its sibling. However, the distillery character isn't quite as clearly discernible in the '78 as it is in the '79.
    • Finish
      89 89
Wood, oil, embers, and tobacco linger. Now, the iodine note and hay return. The finish is long and pleasantly warming. However, something is missing here to make it a 90.
