A privilege. Smelt amazing (OLD) right from first opening the bottle. A benchmark malt for me - if I tell you that I spent some considerable time fishing bits of the failed cork out of the spirit with a straw, and that felt like a small price to pay, you get some idea of how much I enjoyed this!
    • Nose
      94 94
Old and elegant, spicy and musty. As it opens, pleasantly sour floral and fruity notes, menthol grows, beautiful and increasingly waxy and metallic. Outstandingly rich.

With water: phenomenal, the flavours redouble! Waxy tangerines and lemons. Keeps getting better, with honey and yet more wax. Fragrant, sweet wood smoke.
    • Taste
      92 92
Lovely, powerful but refined, pleasantly sour fruit. Mouth-coating and spicy.

With water: brighter and slightly fizzy.
    • Finish
      93 93
Smoke increases, slightly ashy at the end.

    Had this in a rare malts line up including;
    Millburn 25
    Brora 20 (1982)
    Brora 21 (1977)
    Hillside 25 (1971)

What’s clear about rare malts is they will slap you around. The lineup was like trying to analyze 5 of Mike Tyson’s punches to your face.

Rare malts do better on their own terms; they are quite egocentric and demanding bottles, in my opinion.

Hot and closed off nose. It’s pleasant enough and even slightly old school, but not totally accessible due to abv. Naked and distillate driven. Hessian, white pepper, ginger, prickly. A little wax, a little honey, a lot of heat.

Palate is better, like all rare malts. Loads of honey which I love. Beeswax, coconut and vanilla. Old style. Honey infused with chilies. Honeydew.

Finish is long, powerful. A little burlap, honey, soft waxy touches, and a lot more spice. Chili, ginger, pepper.

  5. LiquidThoughts scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

Typically rare malts, very concentrated, intense experience, in the nose, as is often the case, the complexity has been hidden by the alcohol, but then it really hits the spot from start to finish, fascinating what a great, elegant, silky body is possible.
    • Nose
Very concentrated, Parma ham, toffee, orange peel, what cheesy, cocoa powder, sweet malt, damp tobacco, damp grass, red apple, melon
    • Taste
Of course, mega power, but with an ingeniously silky body, beautifully integrated, fruit syrup bomb, tangerine, guava, mango, melon, kiwi, nice butter notes, liquid caramel, but also slightly dirty malt, nutmeg, ginger, chamomile, fennel, ginger, Raisins, fresh coffee, parma ham
    • Finish
The beautiful malt again, apple peel, ham, brown sugar, rosemary, plums, very long

  6. St. Pauli scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

I wish I was older and would have been able to purchase this when it was released... Now it's simply too expensive. But excellent it is also!
    • Nose
Very pleasant, floral and fruity. Heather and lavender come to mind first, then hay, malted barley, husks, honey, lemon juice, melon, and apricot. There is also a little woodiness, with sawdust and vanilla. With water: gets a little earthier with licorice root and cough syrup.
    • Taste
Hot when undiluted, yet still pleasant with the same floral and fruity character. It has a sweet feel, with a little sour edge of citrus. With water, it develops to a lovely, almost syrupy dram. It's very delicate, floral and fruity. Lavender honey, beeswax, peach, melon, apple and lemon prevail. Then, the malt, cough syrup, vanilla and a little wood smoke complete the senses. Towards the end, it gets pleasantly drying with a dash of pepper.
    • Finish
The finish is long, with more pepper now, and a bigger role for the licorice and cough syrup. Next to that, some aniseed shows. The fruit has almost vanished, but the floral and malty side stays.

    Nose

Incredibly forceful and vibrant arrival. Apple puree, sandal wood, peanut butter and floral aspect that brings a summery vibe. Lemon cheesecake, corn and shortbread. Incredibly detailed and waxy. Orange, apricot stone and more citrus notes underline how alive this whisky is. A little marzipan, raw biscuit dough, crackers and Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer. Fire wood, saline, freshly laid concrete and cleaning solution for glass – classic Invernessian weirdness.

    Palate

A richness and decadence to this whisky. It threatens to explode on the palate with an arsenal of flavours. Instead, without water it is a little overzealous at first. A tartness initially, with the orange and lemon pips fighting for supremacy. More apples, pine cones and beeswax. Then it goes international with Kiwi fruit, mango and some guava. Quite floral for an Invernessian whisky. Oh, don’t me wrong, there’s still the oddity of concrete, or to be more precise, sweepings from a concrete floor. Given time you pick up on the delicate smokiness and there’s a fatty essence to this whisky, which has a great texture. It is a blockbuster and with water the fruitiness continues.

I mean, its not very good - notes from a blind tasting - so no +scores for being a rare malts.

    Amazing stuff.
Mineral, metallic, orange, waxxxxxxx, honey, citrus, grapefruit, varnish.
Great one. But not enough complexity.

  11. Luigisim scored this whisky 94 points Connoisseur

    Memorable dram.
    Stunning organoleptic profile.
Mango, Scots pine, pepper, olive oil, salmon. But above all, malt at his best.

    Nose:

Dark, musty, soft sherry, waxy, soft peat, eucalyptus. What the hell is this. It's unlike any other malt i've tried before. Dark yet bright at the same time.

    Palate:

Proper chewy malt. Fatty, waxy and oily, honey, beeswax, sweet chili, earthy, mossy, heavy duty glue remover. Soft citrus in the background. An absolute bomb.

    Finish:

Soft smoke lingers for ages, warm oak, mushrooms, wax, brown sugar coated roast ham/bacon.

    Overall:

Jesus Christ this is crazy. I have no real words. It's a strange one, but amazing in its own right. I wouldn't have expected this combo of tastes to work but somehow it does in a grandiose way. If i were rich enough, i'd definitely buy a bottle.

Today I'm tasting this offering from a local festival's virtual session. Have perhaps had one other Millburn some years ago, looking forward to this one. Let's see how it tastes.

Nose starts with cooked ham, then a waft of warming spices, some citrus arriving, floral honey mix, some damp earthy aromas, some dark chocolate as well, some dustiness.

Palate begins with citrus, then oily honey, silky chocolate, barley sugars, spices.

Finish continues on from the palate with the spices and oils mingling, melted dark chocolate, citrus zest.

Needs water and swims very well! Develops really nice combination of big summerly herbs and spices, complex metallic workshop components and various decent nuances of citrus skin and light fruits (green apples, gooseberries, yellow currants, physalis, star fruit). Additional very nice reminiscence of dried cereals... Really intense Millburn but the complexity is definitely limited!

this was very popular in a strong tasting line up. I liked it a lot too but did not find the right dilution (which it needs - funny how they used to say 1 part whisky 2 parts water as a serving suggestion on RMS). 8/10.
    • Nose
      sweaty, guava skin, mint leaves
    • Taste
camembert funkiness, soft white fruits, spicy oak

Wide. Pungent. There's a mix of sweet and sour here, with a touch of smoke and herbal peat.

Very salty. Smoke. Grass. Not bad, but not very cohesive. All over the place with water.

Long, but not impressive. As with a lot of these high proofed Rare Malts from "lesser" distilleries, they are pretty good, very intellectual, but not very enjoyable, and therefore not something I would reach for often.

I finished this on 23/12/11 and did the review then.

What surprised me most about this was how fresh it was. The undiluted aroma was very light with citrus, grass, some melon and a whiff of cigar smoke.

The diluted aroma took me back to summer at my mothers with horses and hay, and more of that citrus.

The flavour was fruity with guava, passion fruit, that hint of smoke again and sandal wood.

The finish was warm and of medium length with sandal wood and for the first time liquorice.

    Very pleasant indeed

Much rougher in th nose then the 1969er (ok has already 10v% more), sweet, oily, woody. Whem you pour some water in, this drams comes really more lovely, sweet malt with citrus fresh notes.
