I have no idea what the economic or internal corporate considerations were that led Chivas Brothers or Pernot Ricard to close and demolish the Imperial Distillery. It certainly couldn't have been the brand or the whisky produced there. Combined with a good cask like the one used in this bottling, they conjured up a wonderful, classically matured ex-bourbon single malt. I really like the whisky for its understated character.
    • Nose
      90 90
A wonderfully classic, clean aroma of ex-bourbon cask maturation reveals itself. Split vanilla pods soaked in honey, accompanied by green stone fruit and hints of tropical fruits. Green, grassy notes of freshly mown spring meadows with numerous wildflowers repeatedly surface. A subtle spiciness from the wood, along with grated lemon peel, provides a pleasant contrast to the fruit aromas, thus creating an appealing depth. The 19-year maturation period is reflected in the wonderful creaminess and waxiness of the nose. The alcohol content is perfectly chosen, not too weak; the nose is balanced and soft, but never thin.
    • Taste
      89 89
The wonderful creaminess, combined with the subtle waxy note from the nose, continues seamlessly in the mouth. It begins with a wonderfully sweet honey cream with vanilla, flowing over still-warm, light pastry. Sliced cantaloupe, bananas, grapes, and ripe green and yellow apples lie next to the pastry. The dessert is replaced in the palate by a moderately strong spiciness from grated ginger. Very aromatic and well-tempered. This is followed by a budding spiciness at the bottom, in which some nutmeg, cinnamon, and grape pomace also play a role, with a slight bitterness. The alcohol is also very well integrated in the mouth; all aromas and flavors have sufficient power and intensity.
    • Finish
      88 88
Towards the end, the wood becomes more intense, and the longer aging period is now more noticeable in the more bitter notes. The skin and seeds of green grapes are also present, as are some vanilla and apple peel. The finish is long, with the whisky remaining creamy in the mouth.
